Daisy was the beloved mascot of all the cycling events in Ottery. She was present on every occasion, from the Tour of Britain coming to town to the King & Queen of the Mountain at Chineway Hill. Unfortunately, she has passed away, and she will be dearly missed. This article is dedicated to her memory and to all those who have owned, currently own, and will own a four-legged friend.

We at the OSM King & Queen of the Mountain working group are very aware of the dangers that sometimes cycling brings to those who love the sport, therefore we will share information we think might be of interest to those on their bikes. Ride safely. ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšด

Cycling two abreast can deter dangerous overtaking. The new Highway Code includes a reminder that it is often safer to ride side-by-side, particularly when in larger groups or with less experienced riders and children.

ARENโ€™T WE LUCKY LIVING IN OTTERY? THE TOWN WHERE YOU CAN REMAIN ACTIVE DOESNโ€™T MATTER YOUR AGE.
Reading on FB about the Tour of Britain in 2021 brought memories of 2017 and 2019 when the Tour came to town. In 2016 Zsolt Schuller, Tour of Britain Project Manager for the Devon stage, approached us with the idea of bringing the Tour through Ottery. Zsolt right away from the beginning believed in Ottery and what we could do as a community. What never crossed our mind was that the way the Ottery community responded to the event would impressed the organisers of the Tour so much that within a space of two years the Tour returned to our town. The legacy of the Tour persisted and it was followed by numerous cycling events in Ottery such as the King & Queen of the Mountain, the Ottery Bike Fest and the Ottery School mini hill climb. The interesting part of the story and looking at this picture has been the realisation that the team behind all those events is formed by a group of enthusiastic individuals whose ages added up โ€“including the age of the young one in the white shirt- adds up to 437 years. So, people of Ottery if you want to stay active until you are 100 years old, stay in Ottery. The following is a link to the website page from the Action Group with information about the different clubs and organisations in town that you can join.

TO THOSE WHO REMEMBER THE TOUR OF BRITAIN COMING TO OTTERY. A very interesting article in the News Centre of Devon County Council regarding the legacy of the Tour in Devon. Ottery St Mary is widely mentioned in the article because of all the cycling events that originated after the Tour came. Keep your eyes open as the working group might have a few surprises for 2022.

The Tour of Britain may only fleetingly race through communities in Devon, but it has left a lasting legacy in many parts of the county. With a month to go to the Devon Stage of The Tour of Britain we take a look at its long term impact.

THE ENTHUSIASM SHOWN BY OUR PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN WHEN THE TOUR OF BRITAIN ARRIVED IN OTTERY INSPIRED THIS EVENT. David Golthorpe, a school PTA member and a rider for the town at the 1st OSM King & Queen of the Mountain, took his idea to the school PTA, developed it and made it a success in the three years that has taken place. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity the OSM Primary School, the school PTA, the teachers, the parents and supporters such as John Campion from Seasons, George Gori & Richard Mardle from Saddleback, have given us to make of this event such a delightful opportunity for our primary school children to show their cycling skills. Those attending the school in their young years might remember what a tough hill that was, but our kids conquered it with a smile on their face. Well done!

Following the success of the 'Big Bike Ride' last September (raising over ยฃ1,200) Age UK are here again with another chance to ride to keep those cogs working. With the ever increasing demands on Age UK 'Reminder Finders' service, for those with mild to moderate dementia, they are aiming to raise funds to branch out to open up more sessions throughout Mid Devon and beyond. Keeping the 'cogs' moving promotes both mental and physical fitness. So get those chains oiled and those legs stronger and go for it. It is for a good cause!

Well, I guess we at the OSM Devon Stage Tour of Britain Steering Group with the support of Ottery' residents must have done a good job when rumours start to build about the Tour coming back to Ottery for the 3rd time. I really hope we can be as lucky as before and the Tour returns to our town. Keep our fingers crossed.๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ

The Tour of Britain might be coming back to Ottery St Mary next year, after organisers praised support for the event in the town.
