We’re researching local collections in preparation for our upcoming heritage project, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The project is inspired by Oldham’s 18th and 19th century working class scientific and environmental movements, and individuals like James Neild (1825-1896). James, the son of an Oldham hatter, was a passionate advocate for nature conservation and a founding member of the Oldham Microscopical Society, which still meets today.

We want to build upon these legacies at Northern Roots. Soon we’ll be recruiting local people to join our project to help uncover, preserve and communicate the natural, social and industrial heritage of Northern Roots site, inspiring a new generation of Oldhamers to connect with and care for the natural world.

We’re looking for a enthusiastic, dynamic individual to connect a variety of learners to the heritage and nature on the Northern Roots site.

Our Learning Manager will work with our team of Heritage Champions, Citizen Researchers and Citizen Rangers to co-design a pilot programme of curriculum linked educational visits, with support from our friendly, dedicated team.

Specialist knowledge of the communities and heritage of Oldham, and an affinity for horticulture, ecology, arts and culture would be an advantage.

£30,000 - £32,000 per annum depending on experience, pro rate 3 days per week, fixed term contract from May 2025 to April 2026.

Imbolc and Snow Moon walk at Northern Roots!

Imbolc is a Gaelic tradition marking the start of spring, when the winter chill starts the thaw and the days feel lighter.

To celebrate the changing seasons, our team, volunteers, and Natural Health Service participants from Turning Point Rochdale & Oldham gathered together to walk the Northern Roots site, sprinkling birdseed along the way, and setting positive intentions for the year ahead.

The role requires you to build partnerships with a broad range of education providers, and to design and deliver a creative programme of curriculum linked educational visits, placements and sessions at Northern Roots, Oldham.

We’re looking for an Evaluation Consultant with experience in participatory research and reaching diverse communities.

Starting in February 2025, you will lead on training and supporting a team of local Citizen Researchers to design, conduct, and evaluate both qualitative and quantitative research, with support from our dedicated team. This detailed research will inform our next steps as we prepare to open as a visitor destination in 2026.

Our Natural Health Service currently provides services for Hill Top Surgery, Turning Point Rochdale & Oldham and Get Oldham Working and is changing lives in #Oldham. Participants report feeling less isolated and less negative emotions. They have developed stronger connections to nature and their local community, their physical mobility has improved, and GP visits have reduced. Prescribing nature and connection. In 2023 we partnered with Hill Top Surgery which serves a community living right on the doorstep of the Northern Roots site in #Oldham. We’ve been working with Dr Clare Reeder, who has been referring patients from Hill Top Surgery to our Natural Health Service programme. Clare’s patients face a wide range of difficulties from crisis situations to complex and overlapping mental health and physical health issues. At Northern Roots we provide a tailored, person-centered approach, working with participants to find nature-based activities that fit their needs and goals. This week we’re shining a light on our Natural Health Service. Introducing the Natural Health Service at Northern Roots. Our Natural Health Service is a nature-based social prescribing programme designed to support local people with their mental and physical health and wellbeing. Launched in summer 2023, the Natural Health Service is led by Steph Wild. While recovering from a serious health challenge during the pandemic, Steph harnessed nature to help her heal. Steph brings her compassion and expertise to the Natural Health Service and has created a programme that is changing the lives of local people. Steph leverages the power of nature to uplift spirits, encourage self-belief and inspire participants to take care of themselves, each other and the planet.
