It can be hard to know your weights and measures, particularly if you’re serving drinks at home or a party. A unit of alcohol can be a lot less than you think. The image below shows the units of alcohol of many common drinks. As we highlighted earlier this month consider low or no alcohol options or alternate between alcoholic and soft drinks so you won’t over indulge. Happy Hogmanay! It can be easy to eat too much, and many of us aren’t aware of portion sizes. To help with this serve yourself, and use your hand as a guide for portions, as this 'handy'😂 guide from the British Heart foundation shows.

Adopting healthier habits can be easier than you think, the trick is to start with small manageable swaps.
- Try grilling meats rather than frying.
- To cut down on fat, remove skin and fat from meats as well.
- Swap refined white bread, rice and pasta for higher fibre wholemeal bread, whole wheat pasta and brown rice. These options will help to fill you up for longer.

We often eat without thinking, especially if we’re at a party or with others. These tips may help.
- Try to slow down and really savour each mouthful.
- Eat before you go to a party so you can focus on chatting with your friends.
- Before eating have a drink of water – we often confuse hunger with thirst.

The cheeseboard is a temptation and cheese can be high in fat and salt. These tips may help you choose healthier options.
- Fill up on fruit and veg accompaniments such as apples, grapes and celery.
- Choose edam or brie, healthier options because they are naturally lower in fat.
- Have a smaller portion of a stronger cheese such as Danish blue
- Consider reduced fat variants of traditional cheese such as cheddar.

We spy some party hats and a most excellent festive blouse, behind the door of no 16 on our advent calendar.

This wonderful bunch are our Allied Health Professional Leads. They help manage numerous multi-disciplinary teams across diverse professions, including podiatry, dieticians and speech and language therapy to name but a few examples.

These areas of expertise play a vital role in the building blocks of health & wellbeing in the community, and our leads are incredibly passionate about delivering person centred care right here in Aberdeenshire.

Members of our Community Dietetic team attended and presented at the Safe Swallow and Texture Modified Diet training sessions on 10th December. This was a great day with fantastic presentations from NHS Grampian Speech and Language Therapy, Catering and Dietetics departments as well as practical demonstrations from the Nutricia expert dysphagia chef.

If you are involved in preparing or serving food to people with swallowing difficulties or want to learn more please keep a look out for these training sessions in the future.

You don't have to go without when you're having healthier swaps. You can still have Christmas pudding, just watch the portion size and swap brandy butter for half fait crème fraiche or custard made with semi-skimmed milk. Consider a small handful of dried fruit, or have a seasonal satsuma.
