Phlexxibiton 013: ‘Poetraits’ by Fabrice Gagos

Supported by Arts Council England, Nottingham Poetry Festival was able to support six exciting projects in the build up to the 2024 festival that ran from 9-16th June. One of these projects focused on the work of Nottingham Poetry festival photographer, Fabrice Gagos, who was matched with 8 Nottingham Poets to theme and stylise photos that represented them and their work.

The results are within the photos that you see in this exhibition.

As a portrait photographer, it is never really about the picture itself, but about the connection made with the artist I’m photographing. Photography is merely an excuse to meet people and visit a location I would never otherwise. So the idea was to spend more time thinking about what we would want to do, to build an image, a scene, connecting to the artist’s work or personality instead of simply taking a portrait. The goal was to produce some more cinematic images, some would say “high concept” or artsy, I’d say...funnier. The goal for me is always to have fun.

Being photographed is a very vulnerable thing to do, and I was afraid it would be difficult to make artists play along with this idea. But I’ve been quite overwhelmed by the level of engagement with this project from this first selection of artists. All of them shared a lot of their personal experience, childhood or teenage memories, struggles and joy from their journey. And I do hope this connection and trust show in the images.

The Sound Experience Presents: Ingenuity - A Sonic Art Exploration

Exploring and capturing the sonic qualities of the historic National Justice Museum we have challenged four sound producers to showcase a range of acoustic sounds via sound installations in cells of the museum and then host an evening performance in the courtroom presenting a range of sonic compositions diffused over a multi-channel speaker system

Out today ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’ from rising star Megs has already been making waves with pre-release plays on stations such as BBC Introducing East Midlands, Jazz FM and Totally Wired Radio.

The track comes from the artists longing to be able to exist freely outside of the stereotypes and expectations that surround her. A “simple girl from down the street” surrounded by expectations to act and move a certain way because of where she is from and what she looks like. Expectations and judgements that have existed and lingered from the moment she was born.

Musically speaking, the release takes the artist outside of her usual RnB/ Neo-Soul comfort zone with an Afrobeat production from two exciting producers Andre & Chawe (80p&Chewsday).

Funded by the Youth Music Foundation, over the past 8 months, 8 up and coming creatives have been working alongside Phlexx Records & Mimm Studios.

Taking part in a range of masterclasses and workshops and taking on work experience roles within both labels, the project culminated with each Collective member gaining funding and support to launch their own micro-project.

Free to attend and welcome to everyone of all ages, the event will feature Live Performances, Listening Posts, Project Exhibitions and wider Networking Opportunities

The Jazz Bastrds are a newly formed Nottingham based quartet, fusing the traditional sounds and rhythms of their rich musical and personal heritages with an upfront, genre-blurring, illegitimate sound. There’s jazzy blues and bossa nova in the soup, plus a swipe of funk, psyche-rock, and the highwire energy of a gypsy campfire party. If ‘garage-jazz’ doesn’t already exist, it does now.

Their debut E.P. “The Bastrds Are Coming (live)” for Phlexx Records consists of four original compositions, each track individually curated and composed by each member respectively. The tracks were recorded live, designed to be heard as if you were there with them in the room.
