Memories of Battle of the Beanfield - one witness recalls the day police violently attacked hippies trying to get to Stonehenge

On this day, 1 June 1985, British police brutally attacked people heading to Stonehenge in the "Battle of the Beanfield". Police smashed the windows of vehicles the travellers and others were using, dragged people out through the broken glass, beating them and breaking teeth, glasses and bones. They arrested 420 people, the biggest mass arrest of civilians in hundreds of years, systematically looted, smashed and burned travellers' homes and 7 dogs were killed by the RSPCA. Authorities at the time were determined to destroy Britain's traveller communities.

Norfolk/Suffolk Hunt Saboteurs

We’d like to extend our solidarity to LUSH UK (Norwich) and LUSH UK (Ipswich) during the furore surrounding the spycops campaign. Undercover police officers spent more than 40 years lying to, deceiving and abusing activists. These include hunt saboteurs and others involved with animal rights/liberation.

The Mitting Inquiry has ground to a halt because the police are trying to cover their tracks. Now Lush has helped support an initiative by Police Spies Out Of Lives to reignite the possibility of justice for hundreds of people as well as closure for thousands more. We’ve seen the dark heart of the police and know that this campaign is crucial.

Following a confrontation at this year's London Anarchist Bookfair sparked by two people handing out anti-trans leaflets, and a subsequent online firestorm, the Bookfair organisers have released two statements on what happened, announcing they will not be holding one in 2018.
