Here’s what’s been happening over the last week 👇🏻

🌟 Instagram is REMOVING the option to follow hashtags! On December 13th, hashtags you follow will no longer be visible in your feed and you won’t be able to follow more of them. I’m really hoping that this means that in 2025, Instagram will focus on improving its search capability!

🌟 Threads is testing custom feeds of topics and people they want to follow around specific subjects. If you’re in the test, you can pull down on the home screen and switch between the For You feed, Following feed and your custom feeds.

🌟 Instagram is testing an option that allows users to reset their recommendations for content they see in Explore, Reels and Feed if/when they want a “fresh start.”

🌟 TikTok could soon allow creators to build virtual avatars that resemble “ their personality and thinking, enabling continuous interaction with users 24/7.”

🌟 Snapchat launches its first Sponsored Snaps campaign - which allows ads to be inserted directly into users inboxes - the campaign? Promoting the new movie, Wicked.

🌟 Instagram highlights could be moving! They are moving into their own tab on your profile. It looks like this is still in testing, but I’m curious to know how you feel about this? Love it, hate it? I quite like the idea of a dedicated section but, if it isn’t broke, does it need fixing?

🌟 Threads is working on the ability to schedule posts. This has been a long time coming, and it would be awesome to have this as a native feature on the app!

🌟 Bluesy surpasses 20M users! The app is still making waves in the social space - are you using it? Are any of your clients on it?

🌟 LinkedIn shares what to do and what NOT to do on the platform. There’s nothing particularly new here but it’s always good to hear it from the horse's mouth - essentially, be original, post insightful content and don’t do any engagement bait or add any irrelevant posts and comments.

🌟 Instagram does NOT reduce the reach of sponsored content. According to the head of Instagram, Instagram does not downlink sponsored content. Sponsors content from creators who genuinely love the brand and are passionate about the brand do well! What do you think?

🌟 Threads now allows users to save up to 100 drafts in the mobile app.

🌟 Pinterest launches personalised shoppable wish lists. I can’t believe this wasn’t already a feature, but absolutely LOVE this! Pinterest has launched a new feature that allows users to create personalised and shoppable wish lists so you can share all of your gift ideas in one place!

🌟 Google shares the TOP trending products of this year via The Holiday 100, Google’s list of gift ideas based on search trends.

🌟 YouTube is experimenting with its generative AI music offering, Dream Track, by allowing creators to select ‘an eligible song, describe how they want to restyle it, and then generate a unique 30-second soundtrack to use in their Short.

🌟 Threads is potentially launching ads on the platform next year. This is only allegedly true, but Meta plans to offer ad spots to a very small number of advertisers starting in January 2025.

🌟 TikTok has announced that users of TikTok can now access their Lemon8 account (the platform's Instagram-esque dupe) using the same credentials as their TikTok account.

🌟 Instagram now allows users to boost content that includes GIFs and stickers. But the platform worded it a bit more carefully by saying that “most GIFs and stickers are eligible to be boosted”.

Check out these 5 awesome hacks for creating engaging Instagram reels!

1️⃣ Start with a bold statement
Grab attention with something surprising or controversial, for example:
🌟 ’Stop wasting money on ads that don’t convert!’
🌟 ’This skincare mistake is ageing you’
🌟 ‘The experts lied to you about X’

2️⃣ Use questions for curiosity
Ask a compelling question that stops the scroll and makes people think, for example:
🌟 ’Ever wonder why the sky is blue?’
🌟 ’What’s the most underrated travel destination you’ve ever been to? Here’s mine…’
🌟 ‘Are you making this common (niche) mistake?’

3️⃣ Use big reveals
Hint at a result, information drop, or big reveal at the end of the video to keep viewers hooked, for example:
🌟 ’Stop wasting money on ads that don’t convert’
🌟 ’This skincare mistake is ageing you’
🌟 ‘The experts lied to you about X’

4️⃣ Use visual hooks
Grab your viewer's attention with something visual, not just with what you say, for example:

🌟 ’Holding a cucumber instead of a microphone’
🌟 ‘Starting your reel off with a clip of someone falling and then transitioning it into a clip of you!’

5️⃣ Try ‘sludge’ reels
To keep people’s attention, try remixing your video with one that runs well on mute
🌟 Sludge content is where you play 2 videos at the same time
🌟 It keeps the audience engaged for longer
🌟 The easiest way to do this is by stitching other creator’s existing trending reels
🌟 This works especially well for pairing informative reels, with satisfying videos

Here’s what’s been happening over the last week 👇🏻

🌟 YouTube is testing TikTok-style hyperlinked blue comments. Not particularly shocking, as all the platforms tend to copy one another in some way now. But, this feature makes popular terms clickable, and then when a user clicks on it, they’ll be taken to the search results for that term.

🌟 YouTube makes a Paid Promotion label available to users on desktop and mobile.

🌟 LinkedIn shared tips on sharing short videos on the platform. Keep it short, and vertical and always use captions. Under 2 minutes is the sweet spot to hold viewers' attention and make sure it’s no less than 15 seconds. Content doesn’t have to be exclusive to LinkedIn. Include a strong accompanying post by providing context and a few key takeaways in the caption (aim for a minimum of 50 words). Short videos on LinkedIn are here to stay, and I would really recommend using this time to experiment with video content - you can repurpose from other platforms to make your life easier too!

🌟 Instagram is testing the ability for users to see insights on their posts without being a business or creator account. As far as I’m aware, there’s no official announcement of this, but something that’s been spotted. This isn’t public, only available to you!

🌟 TikTok has published a guide to post-Christmas marketing

🌟 CapCut has launched Commerce Pro for creating professional, engaging content that drives business results. It is perfect for those looking to streamline their creative process and elevate their brand presence.

🌟 Meta is rolling out Meta AI to users in the UK.

🌟 Australia is looking like it'll BAN U16s from social media but can't say exactly how they'll get platforms to enforce it.

TikTok launches new and improved FREE courses via TikTok Academy.

Here’s what’s been happening over the last week 👇🏻

🌟 Instagram’s working on the ability to add photos/ videos to a carousel AFTER it’s been posted! I am SO here for this! So many times I’ve uploaded a carousel and had to delete it because I’ve forgotten to include an image - being able to add media AFTER upload will be such a game changer!

🌟 Netflix launches video clipping feature, Moments which allows users to save and share clips from their fave episodes and movies. Netflix said ‘sharing Moments on Instagram, Facebook and other social platforms is just as easy. You can share a Moment as you create it or, from the My Netflix tab, you can select a scene and tap to share it across all of your platforms’

🌟 LinkedIn could be moving your in-app navigation options to the top of the screen. It’s only in testing but I can’t see how this would benefit the user experience on the platform! What would you prefer?

🌟 TikTok has partnered with UnitedMasters, a distribution platform for independent artists. Which means that UM’s catalogue of music will be on TikTok and hopes to provide more exposure for independent musicians.

🌟 Instagram LOWERS the quality of videos if it ‘isn’t watched for a long time’. Mosseri claims if it’s then watched more, the platform will re-render the higher quality video.

🌟 Threads reaches 275m users

🌟 Instagram says including your own logo in a Reel is fine (thanks, IG)

Here’s what’s been happening over the last week 👇🏻

🌟 Instagram tests feature that tells users WHY their Reel is performing well. This could be a super useful tool for those with little marketing support!

🌟 Did you lose LinkedIn followers/ connections this week? You weren’t the only one! LikedIn was caught in murky waters after users began noticing huge drops in their connections and follower counts. LinkedIn have now confirmed that this was a bug that’s now been resolved.

🌟 Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, said that posting Carousels on Instagram often get more reach for 2 reasons. One being that more pieced of media = more interactions and more interactions = more reach on average. Two being that if someone sees your carousel but doesn’t swipe, Instagram will give the carousel a second chance in-feed. He also mentioned that using music on carousels and photos now makes them eligible to be shown in the reels tab, which can also help with reach!

🌟 Threads launched analytics via mobile - yay! This provides insight into views, likes, replies, audience demographics etc and users can select date ranges between a week and 90 days.

🌟 Creators can now facilitate even more engagement on their YouTube shorts via polls.

🌟 X (FKA Twitter) is rolling out Radar, a “real-time trend analysis tool” previously known as Insights. It allows users to spot emerging trends as they happen. And of course, it’s only available to Premium+ users.

🌟 Threads is testing the ability to easily post between accounts, by allowing users to switch profiles within the post composer instead of having to completely switch profiles.
