To celebrate Saint Patrick, and in particular his strong Scottish connections and the long-held military traditions associated with St. Patrick’s Day, the Schomberg Society is hosting a series of events:

📚 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝐃𝐚𝐲 📚

Today is World Book Day and literature plays a big part in the linguistic culture of the Ulster-Scots! 📚

From the poetry of the great Rabbie Burns to the weavers poets in Ulster and the recent emergence of new young Ulster-Scots writers, there are some great examples of Ulster-Scots literature available! 📖

We wanted to share with you all one of the Schomberg Society’s recent publications, ‘Tha Ulster-Scots O’ Mourne | Tha Fasch an’ tha Fiel’. 📕

This book was produced with the aim of better educating folk about our Ulster-Scots heritage and traditions particularly in the fishing and farming communities here in Mourne. 🐟 🐄

We have distributed hundreds of these books to members of the public, community groups, libraries, schools and youth organisations! ✅

The Schomberg Society is looking forward to having our annual St. Patrick’s Stew & Quiz Night on Monday 17th March 2025 in Reivers House, Kilkeel!

The Stew & Quiz Night will commence at 7.30pm and Quiz Master on the night will be Gareth Crozier!

Teams are a maximum of 6 people and it is £6 per person, which includes the quiz and a good bowl of stew! 🍲

This is always a very enjoyable evening and everyone is more than welcome to come along!

We regret to inform you of the recent death of Evelyn Ann EDGAR

It is with much sadness and deep regret that we have learned of the passing of one of our much loved and respected members Evelyn Edgar.

Evelyn had for many years, been a stalwart and a steadfast loyal member of the Schomberg Society, who volunteered countless hours in many capacities.

She was a long-serving member of our Schomberg Fife and Drum Band, and was a regular face in Reivers House, always helping at so many of our events.

However, one of the groups that she loved so much was our Highland Heathers Ladies Group, which Evelyn gave so much of her time and commitment to.

Evelyn always put others before herself, and was renowned for her generosity and kindness, and contributed in so many ways, while never seeking any recognition or praise for her work.

No matter what was happening, Evelyn was always there willing to lend a hand and she will be sorely missed by everyone in the Schomberg Society.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the wider Edgar family circle at this sad time.

It was great to see such a good crowd in Reivers House this morning to support the Rising Sons of the Valley Flute Band’s Annual Fry Morning, with over 150 people through the doors! 🍳

Don’t forget folks, Mourne Black District are hosting a special Youth Night as part of their Mission tonight, and this will take place from 8pm in Kilkeel Orange Hall.

The last night of the Mission will be tomorrow night from 8.30pm in Mourne Presbyterian Church, and everyone is very welcome to come along.

📚 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬 & 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐆𝐂𝐒𝐄 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 | 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 📚

The Schomberg Society is delighted to be offering free Maths & English Tuition Classes for Year 12 GCSE students which will take place in Reivers House, Kilkeel.

These classes are aimed at Year 12 students who are sitting the M6 Maths GCSE Exam and those students who may struggle to achieve a Grade C in their Maths and English GCSEs.

Details of the classes:

▪️ English GCSE Tuition Classes - Mondays | 6.30pm - 7.30pm

▪️ Maths GCSE Tuition Classes - Wednesdays | 3.45pm - 4.45pm

Please note places on the classes are limited.

The Rising Sons of the Valley Flute Band is looking forward to hosting their Big Breakfast Morning tomorrow (Saturday 1st March 2025) from 8.30am - 11.30am in Reivers House, Kilkeel.

The Breakfast Morning will be in conjunction with Top Nosh Catering.

If you’re free tomorrow evening (Friday 28th February), you will be very welcome to come along to Ballynahinch Orange Hall from 7.30pm.

Sgt Glen Espie BEM will be telling his story known as ‘The Terrorist Knocks Twice’, along with Kenny Cromie sharing his knowledge and experiences on 3 UDR.

Glen Espie recently shared this story with us in Reivers House, and we would certainly encourage everyone to come along and hear his very powerful account of his experiences in the Ulster Defence Regiment.

The Ulster-Scots Agency has today opened its annual Ulster-Scots Community Festivals Grant.

The programme aims to support community festivals throughout Ulster from 1 June to 31 December 2025.

Ulster-Scots Community Festivals provide people with opportunities to experience and learn about Ulster-Scots culture, heritage, and language; and have an important role to play in raising awareness of Ulster-Scots within the wider community. The inclusion of Ulster-Scots content in other community festivals is also supported through the programme.

The Ulster-Scots Agency has opened its annual Ulster-Scots Community Festivals Grant.

The Schomberg Society is absolutely delighted to have secured funding through The National Lottery Community Fund’s Sustainable Community Buildings Programme! 🙌

The Schomberg Society in Kilkeel is using this £30,364 grant to improve the energy efficiency and sustainability of our community centre, Reivers House.

The project will support us to install solar panels with battery storage, roof lights, and replace windows and doors, which will support our group to reduce carbon emissions by 1,597 CO2 kg per year. These measures will save our group £1,376 each year on our energy bills, which can be used for a huge range of community activities, which take place weekly in our very busy community centre.

A special thanks to The National Lottery Community Fund for their much appreciated support with this project! 👏

The National Lottery Community Fund today announced the first grants from the Sustainable Community Buildings programme, which is helping groups save money on bills and cut carbon emissions.

𝐒𝐄𝐅𝐅 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐬 𝐄𝐱𝐡𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤

We are really delighted with the response and support received for the SEFF Memorial Quilt Exhibition, which we hosted last week in our centre, Reivers House.

During the five days, over 𝟲𝟱𝟬 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲, (the majority of whom were children and young people) visited the Exhibition.

It was fantastic to have welcomed so many schools, youth groups and community groups who had booked into receive a talk and a tour of the Memorial Quilts on display during this time.

It was also very pleasing to have welcomed so many locals and visitors from outside of the area who took the time to visit the Exhibition.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our friends in SEFF Victims & Survivors for allowing us to host the Exhibition and for their support with the Launch event, and also to our friends in MAST Victims Group for their support with the project.

A special mention to our own members, and also the representatives from SEFF and MAST, who took the time to speak with the many visiting groups and schools during the week.

It is so important that we never forget all of those innocent victims from the recent Troubles, and that we continue to remember the service and sacrifice given by so many.
