population of around 100,000. On 31st August, 1994 the people of Ireland - north and south - celebrated the official announcement of a ceasefire. From that day onwards N Ireland has been steadily growing and improving. In 2002 Newry received city status. This announcement brought with it a fresh hope and it was the main catalyst in converting Newry into the vibrant, fresh and fast growing city that it has become.
