Every year since 2015, when first sent out the now-coveted invitations, more than one hundred of the world’s best loggers gather in Mexico to celebrate longboarding in a weeklong festival-party-competition extravaganza known as ; but you already know this. I don’t think I need to ramble on here.

At its essence, Mexilog represents all of the best aspects of longboarding culture. On the unofficial world tour of traditional logging, it would no doubt be the championship event. It is, in a word, iconic, but it is impossible to explain with words alone. I tried to put together 20 of my favorite photos from this year’s event, and even that proved to be a challenge. Not included are many moments of laughter; street tacos and open air markets; lucha libre matches and live music; urchin-infested waters; late nights melting into dawn patrols…the only way to experience Mexilog fully is to dive in and be present. It’s a world unto itself. For now, I hope you enjoy these photos 🕺🏽

I’ll certainly be back in Mazatlán for the 2025 edition of . Will you?

Cheers ✌🏽

The annual club event & invitational put on by the has been a staple of the longboard scene since the early 60’s, when names like Joey Cabell, Bobby Patterson, Johnny Fain, Joey Hamasaki, and so many more reigned supreme. Born from the wartime-era Lifesaving Clubs of Australia & California, Surf Clubs were a natural development in surf culture- an inevitability perhaps- providing space for mentorship, training, community, competition and reputation. In California it was MSA, Windansea, Hope Ranch, Long Beach, Oceanside (more to come from their recent event)…year by year new clubs joined the party, with different surf clubs hosting events at their home breaks up and down the coast.

The Malibu event— it being Malibu, after all— seems by all accounts to have held a particularly revelrous reputation, regarded by many as *the* premiere wave on the California coast. Competitors vied for the obvious prestige that comes with out-surfing all the hottest surfers around, at one of the best waves around. Still, perhaps more alluring was the chance to surf the point with only a few other people out. Even in the early 60’s, surfers wrote with nostalgia about the idyllic opportunity…if only they knew what was coming 😂

Not surprisingly, Surfrider beach was packed once again last weekend for the 2024 iteration of the MSA Classic. Warm weather, cooperative surf, and, oh yea— empty Malibu— brought surfers from all over, representing many of those original clubs that laid the foundation for everything we know to be “surfing” today. Competitive longboarding always seems to be a contentious topic but, with a healthy mix of camaraderie and competition, the clubs have it figured out in my opinion. Surf clubs have long served as a vessel which carries forward the core of what we love about longboarding. And in their own way, the people who keep these organizations running keep surfing itself alive, in the face of ever-changing industry and culture, like a flame in the midst of winter.

That’s all for now— Thanks to MSA for a killer weekend, and to everyone else who keeps this community buzzing 🙏🏽

For the love of it!✌🏽

Hey Longboarder community! here, chiming in from across the pond (and then some) in Southern California 👋🏼 If we haven’t yet met, I’m a surfer-turned-photographer hailing from Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina; a few years ago I took a detour from my career in research & counseling in order to chase the wisdom of the ocean with a camera in hand. As with many of us, it’s a long and winding road, and you can check out some of my story in the most recent edition of the mag! I’m always happy to share more. Anyway—

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be hopping on here to share photos, stories, and random happenings from the past and present, a little glimpse into the wide world of surfing as seen through my lens. I’m so stoked to meet y’all here for a while— no matter where we are, or where we’re from, whether we’re weekend warriors or full-blown surf addicts, whether you call it an art or a sport, surfing has changed us profoundly and (hopefully) for the better. We know that surfing is more than the merch we wear, that it transcends the simple act of wave-riding; we know that, in particular, the patient, humble, and forgiving act of longboarding offers many a salve for the various ailments of modern living. We know that there is something meaningful here, beneath the surface. I hope that we can explore the depths together over the next few weeks and share in our celebration of this gift of wave-sliding.

I’d love to hear where y’all are tuning in from, what piques your interest and draws your curiosity, maybe even what longboarding means to you. So if you feel moved, drop a comment! If you’d rather watch from afar, no worries— the introvert in me is certainly right there with you— I hope you enjoy the photos to come!

For today, here’s a random selection of some memorable moments in the water from the past couple of years; in typical photographer fashion, I put some photos of myself on the last slide 😂

‘Til tomorrow,

Cheers y’all, and happy sliding ✌🏽

World Class Longboard Waves That Fell Off The Map

Series One : Saint-Leu, Reunion Island

It’s a vanishingly rare thing, in our surf-obsessed 21st century, for amazing waves to suddenly disappear into the mists of obscurity. In this brand-new series, we’ll set out to tell the stories of several spots that have done just that, transforming from firm longboarder favourites to almost totally forgotten in just a few short years…
