This Saturday night has been wedged between Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night . . . I am expecting it to be busy, all my kit is sorted and I am ready to go out when needed 👻🧨
I see that a second racoon has been found, it’s always the weird things that happen on the Island that make the national news 😅 I have some mini handcuffs ready should I find one breaking in to sheds.
A very busy week, several arrests for a wide range of offences and there are various other things going on. I’ll share with you a few things we have been dealing with.
Last night at 23:37 hours, officers were in Cowes and spotted an illegal electric motorbike and stopped it on Consort Road. Not only did the rider not have a driving licence, these bikes are not road legal and as such you are not able to obtain insurance, tax or MOT.
They can reach some crazy speeds and are not safe for the rider or the public. The bikes also cost a few thousand pounds to buy and it will now be crushed.
Earlier on in the night, officers were on proactive patrol in Newport and stopped a person that was acting suspiciously, using our powers under Stop & Search a large knife was located. They were arrested and a decision on what will happen will be made in due course.
We also had a few other arrests, a man was arrested on suspicion of domestic assault and another person with an outstanding warrant
I’m expecting it to be busy in the towns tonight, a few large premises have late night events on across the Island. Officers will be out on foot patrol to deal with any issues.
I plan on completing some paperwork first and will go out later on.
The team have some sweets to keep them going overnight.
Have fun and stay safe.
Sgt Radford

Members of the South Wight Neighbourhood Policing Team have re-launched the ‘Adopt a Post Office’ scheme in Shanklin.
The national scheme has seen police forces across the UK team up with the Post Office to provide communities additional opportunities to engage with their local neighbourhood police officers.
As well as having a dedicated space to display crime prevention information, it will enable teams to hold regular beat surgeries and highlight Let’s Talk - our new community survey initiative that aims to understand the needs of our local communities and enables them to share any concerns with us.
The scheme provides customers and staff regular contact with their local officers, which has been found to provide re-assurance and to prevent scams or fraud by speaking to specific groups who may be withdrawing money at the counter.
PCSO Jackie May, pictured, will be formally adopting Shanklin’s post office on Regent Street on behalf of the Neighbourhood Policing Team on Friday 1st November – you can come and speak to her here between 10am 10.45am that morning.
The team will hold beat surgeries there on a regular basis and dates will be sent out on Facebook and the Hampshire/Isle of Wight Alert system (which you can sign up to here: https://orlo.uk/hRE9Y )
PCSO May said: “This is a great way for members of the public to speak to their Neighbourhood Policing Team about any concerns they may have while they’re out shopping. The post office remains at the heart of communities, and this is an important opportunity for us to provide additional information and reassurance to residents.
“The aim is to speak to people who we might otherwise struggle to engage with. We’ll be passing on important information like warning against distraction burglary, bogus callers, scams, and courier fraud.”

We are proud to be part of the Isle of Wight Breastfeeding Friendly Scheme💚
Public Health Isle of Wight launched the scheme with support from The Breastfeeding Network to encourage more businesses and organisations across the island to support nursing mothers. The Southern Vectis team received educational training which explained how we can support nursing mothers on the Southern Vectis Network. We hope it helps mothers feel at ease about feeding on our buses. You will see the Breastfeeding icon across our network on our buses and in our travel shops.

The Vectis Radio Christmas Tree at IW Pearl. Please go and take a look.
Vectis Radio was launched by Ian Mac as an Internet only radio station on January 23rd 2010 starting life at the Quay Arts Centre. The surroundings back then can only be described as small, in fact it was pretty much a broom cupboard. Unfortunately, after six months, Quay Arts wanted it?s broom cupboard back, so Vectis Radio was on the move, in fact, we move twice more that year, first to Newport Football Club, then to Crocker Street, but never quite finding a permanent base. We thought we’d found our home in the Spring of 2011 when we moved to a derelict building in West Street, opposite Jewson. This proved to be a more sustainable base for us and we made it our own for two years. Seemingly all was going well, until in June 2013, when we were given seven days to vacate the premises as it was deemed unsafe. With everything up in the air and nowhere to lay our hat, the station was introduced to the team at The Riverside Centre. Thankfully they agreed to let us broadcast from there… in the shed. Which we did!!
Moving more times than The Littlest Hobo from a cupboard to a derelict building and then a shed, it didn’t dampen the team spirit and we never once felt like giving up! After months of broadcasting and proving our worth to The Riverside Centre, they eventually agreed that that we could move from outside in the shed, to inside… in the gym. But it wasn’t all squat thrusts and star jumps, once cleared, the station had something to be really proud of, as in a previous life, the gym had originally been a studio for ‘Platform One’ some twenty years prior. It was a perfect fit!
We moved into our current studio in August 2014, and have since made it our home. We were finally in a stable location and able make real strides, which we promptly did by establishing the 4P’s training school (otherwise known as ‘The 4P’s Project’) which runs as part of the Isle of Wight Council’s ‘Youth Offer’. Over 100 students have since completed the course which has been successful in helping many young people improve their confidence and communication through teaching the four key areas of radio; presenting, production, promotion and podcasting. The course is available free of charge to 11-19 year olds, and also up to 25 for people with additional needs.
Since 2010, we’ve grown from strength to strength and due to the support of our listeners and sponsors we have always been determined that the station should continue to broadcast. In October 2015 we applied for an FM community license and after months of waiting, fingers firmly crossed, the license was finally granted in June 2016. Our next big step was to raise funds, and thanks to the generosity and dedication of the the our supporters, Vectis Radio were able to raise the necessary funds to make our FM dream a reality. On November 4th 2017, Vectis Radio went live on FM 104.6.
There have been many highs along the way. We once boasted the youngest ever sports presenter in the UK. George Steed was aged just 14 at the time. Perhaps our biggest achievement is the 4P’s training school, which is helping young people with and without additional needs grow in confidence and giving them opportunities to broadcast. The list of achievements continues, however with the highs come the lows and it’s those lows that have made us extra determined to make the station a success.
After many years of sleepless nights, hard slog, moving studio six times, very rarely going off the air and sheer bloody mindedness, Vectis Radio has arrived!!
