Newport High Street witnessed a disturbing incident this evening as a clueless individual wreaked havoc on an illegal 45-mile-per-hour electric scooter. Buzzing Block Party at Duckpool Road
In what may be the most unusual block party Duckpool Road has ever seen, thousands of bees swarmed in at around 2pm today, making their homes in the gaps of the terraced houses' brickwork. Images captured by local residents show a spectacle of swirling honeybees plastering the side of a house like nature's own wallpaper.
local residents managed to remain calm and took immediate action to ensure the safety of both their neighborhood and the bees. Rather than reaching for the bug spray, they dialed up the police and local beekeepers for assistance
"It was like a scene straight out of a film, bees buzzing everywhere. But there was something beautiful about it too," said a resident of Duckpool Road who spotted the swarm from her front room window.
Contrary to the frightful reputation they often have, honeybees are integral to our ecosystem. They pollinate many of the plants that make our meals possible. However, the sudden appearance of a bee swarm can be unnerving and may pose a threat to those allergic to bee stings.

Maindee Primary School has been praised for its efforts to create a welcoming environment for all students, regardless of their background or circumstances. The school has worked to promote diversity and inclusivity, with a focus on ensuring that all children feel valued and supported.
The School of Sanctuary award recognizes the efforts of Maindee Primary School to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all students. The school has worked closely with local refugee and asylum seeker organizations to provide support for families and children who have been displaced, including offering language support, counseling services, and practical assistance with housing and other needs

Q: What does being a School of Sanctuary mean to your school community?
A: It is an honour to be announced as the first school of sanctuary in Newport and to be recognised for all the work that we do. It shows pupils, families and people of our community that we are a safe space and respect everyone regardless of their race, religion or background.
Q: How did your school go about applying for the School of Sanctuary award?
A: The School of Sanctuary accreditation was brought to our attention by our headteacher, and we felt this was an award close to our hearts which matched our school ethos perfectly. When looking through the criteria for the award we realised how much we already do at Maindee which made our application process very straightforward. We sat together and gathered evidence of the work we already do here and were pleased to see that we already met a lot of the criteria. For any schools that are looking to become a school of sanctuary, their website has plenty of resources to support and Megan Greenwood the City of Sanctuary lead was a huge help.
Q: What initiatives and activities did your school undertake to promote a culture of welcome and inclusivity?
A: Our school motto is ‘Living and Learning in Harmony’, this represents what we stand for as a school and throughout our community. Our curriculum here at Maindee is driven by our Peace Plan which gathers views from both pupils and parents. Our Peace Plan was created to ensure that as a school we teach and celebrate all cultures and religions.
Q: How have students and families responded to your school’s efforts to become a School of Sanctuary?
A: When we invited our parents/carers in to provide an input to their child’s education they fully embraced the idea of becoming a School of Sanctuary and were keen to share traditions and celebrations that are close to their hearts. During our celebration events, parents were keen to come into school to help teach and develop pupils’ skills and understanding on a range of experiences.
Q: Are there any specific projects or initiatives that your school has planned to celebrate this achievement?
A: To celebrate our positive news, we held a school assembly where we welcomed the Leader of the Council Jane Mudd to present us with our award. We were also thankful to be joined by the Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member of Education Deborah Davies and many other valued members of our community.

Further information has emerged regarding the unexplained death of a 59-year-old woman on Corn Street, Newport, on Thursday 4 May.
Gwent police have issued the following statement
“We received a report that a woman had been found unresponsive on Corn Street, Newport, at around 7.40am on Thursday 4 May.
Officers attended along with personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Service, who confirmed that a 59-year-old woman had died.
The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing.
Inspector Jennie Tinsley-Brustad said:
“Officers will be making further enquiries, it is possible that you may see ongoing police activity in the area as part of this work, but please don’t be alarmed.
“If you have concerns or questions then please do stop and talk with us.”
Police and forensics remain on site as investigations are ongoing. This incident comes a week after the stabbing on the High street

A once peaceful and idyllic secondary school in Newport has erupted into a hotbed of violence, leaving parents, teachers, and community members deeply concerned for the safety and wellbeing of their children. The situation has taken a turn for the worse, as shocking footage of physical altercations and teacher assaults have leaked online, sparking outrage and dismay among the public.

Update from Gwent Police regarding the stabbing that left the city centre in chaos.
Police have arrested two men from the Newport area, aged 23 and 29, on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm (GBH).
Both men remain in police custody being questioned.
Officers have also arrested a 24-year-old Newport man on suspicion of GBH. He also remains in custody.
A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "Anyone who was in the area at the time, has dashcam footage or has any information that could help the investigation is asked to call 101, quoting 2300129821, or you can direct message on Facebook or Twitter.

A fire broke out on Commercial Street early this morning, causing a flat above a shop to become engulfed in flames.
