Recording video reference for animation is a great way to understand weight, real-world physics and key poses. This isn't what we were doing James just decided to lay down so we started recording.
Tomorrow Project Manager Courtney and 2D Generalist Animator Iky will be heading down to North East Expo. We had a little trouble when booking the tickets so if you see a incredibly tall person in a trench coat sneaking around, we assure you they are not suspicious and you should network with them. See you all tomorrow!
Happy St George's day!

April 2024 marks 100 years of BBC Educational content. To celebrate this occasion here is a look back on some of our BBC Educational Projects
This weeks drawing challenge was to create a protagonist based on the Easter Bunny.
Vince nailed the challenge with the DND inspired character design!
We hope you all have an egg-stra special Easter.
At Arcus we are constantly learning new things which is why we love working on educational content! We recently had the pleasure of animating a series of religious stories for BBC Teach.
Full versions of each video are available on the BBC Teach website.
Yesterday Project Manager Courtney, Travelled down to deliver a talk to Animation and Games Art students at the University of Sunderland. We hope the tips she provided help animation students begin to think about project coordination and the importance of scheduling projects.
Look out for our animation reel at GDC!
Trailers and Cutscenes for video games have been some of our favourite projects over the years and something the whole team loves to get stuck into.
Thanks to creative UK we've been receiving mentoring, support and advice on how to make this a bigger part of our studios output from industry veteran Clemens Wangerin. He's been absolutely fantastic and we're thrilled to say Clemens will be showcasing our work at GDC
Our James was invited to deliver a talk recently at DesignTalks, a meet up for designers run by Layers Studio
James went into his journey into animation, the founding of Arcus Studios, our pipelines and processes and pondered on the meaning of the word 'motion designer'. Probably for too long.
Massive thanks to layers studio for the invite and to Lorena Frangeti on her insightful talk investigating types of Bias. It was an absolutely pleasure and we hope to attend the event again in the future!
Happy international women's day to celebrate we challenged the Arcus crew to draw their favourite female animated or video game character.
James (Samus - Metroid) Samus was originally inspired by Ripley from the Aliens franchise and as such kicks ass and survives against all odds in hostile alien environments.
Happy international women's day to celebrate we challenged the Arcus crew to draw their favourite female animated or video game character.
Dom (Chell - Portal) - Abnormally stubborn and driven in the face of insurmountable odds. Chell relies on nothing but her own intelligence and tenacity to defeat her omniscient AI captor and escape the sinister quantum mechanical playground she’s trapped in.
Iky (Tifa - Final Fantasy 7) Tifa's a strong loyal friend who punches problems in the face with a smile.
Courtney (Suki - Avatar the Last Air Bender) Leader of the Kyoshi Warriors Suki is shown throughout the show to be a skilled fighter, despite her lack of bending abilities. Suki is able to show her strength while maintaining kindness and compassion.

What's an animatic?
Despite, Microsoft Word still marking it as a misspelling, it's the name given to animated storyboards!
An important step in preproduction, animatics allow us to combine the storyboards with audio on a timeline to test the pacing and flow, allowing us to previsualise and refine an edit before the costly process of actually animating it.
Animatics are one of the last stages before you get stuck in with the animation itself so they're worth taking the time to get right!
Throwback to our work with Newcastle Universities National Institute for Health Research. Newcastle Health Innovation brings world-class research, NHS and partners together. We loved the challenge of reflecting that with abstract visuals demonstrating the interconnectivity between research, science and technology. It was such a pleasure to work with one of our amazing local universities.

James drew this gang of awesome amphibians for the drawing prompt 'firefighting frogs'.
The prompt was set on an animation discord server and is a great example of how helpful it can be to find peers and pals to share your work with and enjoy fun challenges. Speaking of which if your an artist, animator or the like in the north east shoot us a message about joining our discord aNEmates.
We asked the Arcus team what their animation new years resolutions are for 2024!
What's your new years resolution?
One last festive photoshoot from the entrance of our pilgrim street office.
Its been nice to be back in our North East based studio!
It's National Science Fiction day and we wanted to celebrate one of the most influential but little known authors of the genre, Olaf Stapledon.
Stapledon is known as one of the fathers of visionary science fiction, a major influence upon writers such as Doris Lessing and Brian Aldiss, who, like Arthur C Clarke were changed utterly by his writing.
A philosopher, educationalist and social reformer, linked to pacifist movements in the 1930s, Stapledon's novels promote the great potential of humanity, and, with the backdrop of totalitarian facism and communism, our species' tendency towards self destruction.
Arcus Studios' first immersive film was an adaptation of his signature novel 'Star Maker'. We're incredibly proud to be associated in this small way, with such a unique person as Olaf Stapledon.

Throw back to December of 2022 this lovely piece of animation created by Junior Animator Iky as part of personal development. The penguin is very cute, I will be asking santa for one this year...
For 100 years the Dunston Silver Band performed at Saltwell Park, entertaining Sunday park goers young and old. In 2012 funding was cut and the band ceased performing at Saltwell. Arcus Studios sought to memorialise the band, and the relationship of Saltwell Park and its animal inhabitants, to the band. Unfortunately, due to the great Arcus server crash of 2013 only fragments of the project remain, but we dug these Christmas memories out of the Archive. The project was Created and Produced by Michael Gandham in collaboration with The Dunston Silver Band and Magnetic Events.
