Barter Books is one of the largest (and loveliest) second-hand bookstores in Britain. Located in the heart of Alnwick, Northumberland, this converted Victorian railway station first opened its doors in 1991.
As the name suggests, Barter Books offers bookworms the chance to exchange old books for store credit to buy new books. Inside, you’ll find cosy nooks for reading, crackling fires, a Station Room café serving tea and cake, and a model railway trundling over the shelves.
Did you know Barter Books is also famous for its role in rediscovering the “Keep Calm and Carry On” poster? In 2000, an original copy of the now-iconic World War II poster was found among a box of old books, and Barter Books went on to reprint and popularise the design.

Set in the heart of Cragside, Nelly’s Moss lakes walk is one of our favourite family-friendly walks in Northumberland.
Begin at Crozier Car Park (NE63 7XJ) and follow the blue waymarkers to complete the 2.4km trail. Along the way, you’ll experience the unspoilt beauty of the estate’s rich natural landscape, from dense woodland to clear, shimmering lakes, which were originally engineered by Lord Armstrong as part of his pioneering hydro-electricity system.
The path is easy to follow with gentle inclines, making it perfect for prams. Four-legged friends are welcome, but must be kept on leads to protect the native wildlife.
On return to the car park, there’s a nearby café serving everything from hot coffee to ice cream, plus an adventure play area for tiring out little ones.

Savouring those late summer evenings 🍃
Want to set yourself a challenge to conquer this summer? Make it Helvellyn.
Standing at 950m, you’ll need a head for heights, but the views from Striding Edge take some beating. On a clear day, you can see as far as Scotland to the north, the Pennines to the east, and the Isle of Man to the west from the summit.
