FOOD PLANET FUTURE by Robert Dash Photography is out today!

We are so proud of the amazing work that has gone into this book. We hear so much everyday now about how dire the climate crisis is. In contrast, Robert’s work is hugely uplifting, offering hope that together we can find and implement solutions to the looming crises of food shortage and biodiversity loss we are facing. His message is clear: there is hope!

Copies are out now. Get yours from our website (linked in bio), or retailers such as Waterstones, WHSmith, and Amazon.

We're getting excited about the future quite literally. Robert Dash has created a beautiful book taking the reader on a visual journey of everyday foods and our planet and the future. By drawing on art, innovation and research Dash provokes, inspires and imparts valuable information in a stunning format. Images from the macro to the micro create an "Amazing visual feast with a terrific message!" says David R. Montgomery, the author of "Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations, Growing a Revolution".

Celebrating the life of Peter Higgs, British theoretical physicist and Nobel Prize laureate, renowned for his prediction of the Higgs boson which was finally confirmed by experiments at Cern’s Large Hadron Collider in 2012, 48 years after he first proposed it. We had the honour of publishing 3 books with Cern, including the Higgs Edition of the LHC Pop-Up book, by Anton Radevsky & Emma Sanders, and Hunting the Higgs by Marcelloni & Colin Barras. A special edition of the Pop-up book was published in collaboration with the Science Museum and used to accompany the Collider exhibition in 2013. Alexandra had the honour of meeting Peter Higgs in London and presenting him with a newly printed copy of the pop-up book, which he duly signed.

About the beer: On hearing that he was to be awarded the Nobel Prize, a journalist asked Peter Higgs if he would be celebrating with a glass of champagne, to which he replied "I'd rather have a bottle of London Pride". London Pride brilliantly produced this special edition for him which was used at the launch of the Science Museum exhibition. They stand proudly on a shelf in our publishing office which is dedicated to our work with Cern.

This is the cover of our upcoming title ‘Food Planet Future - The Art of Turning Food and Climate Perils into Possibilities’.

Food Planet Future is about our every day foods: how they are grown and used, together with research and innovative practices to ensure their adaptation as pressures on raw materials increase with climate change and an increasing world population. creates a visual feast with the way in which he presents each food / agricultural practice, and the book is set to be a hugely important work for 2024.

The cover image shows a blueberry fruit and seed surface texture. It was inspired by 'Earthrise', taken in 1968 by William Anders, of the Apollo 8 crew, whose iconic photograph helped launch the environmental movement.

After-hours at Frankfurt Book Fair. Long days at the fair are rewarded by delicious food shared with lovely friends. This includes the annual Rizzoli / Papadakis meet-up with .quezada at Mosh Mosh (bibs essential), steak-on-a-hot-stone with and (also an annual dinner, but has morphed from bed restaurants and post-dinner clubbing in Cocoon, to a sophisticated slab of raw meat that we have to cook ourselves) and of course several lovely meals shared with my amazing hosts Steve and Lis, including some of the most delicious beer I’ve tasted (we ate in the brewery), outrageous cakes and booze-laced hot chocolate, and incredible Italian dinner which concluded my hunt for my favourite pfifferling (chanterelles).

Immensely proud to see no less than 8 titles published by my father Andreas Papadakis at Academy Editions, listed among this selection of “Buildings in Print: 100 Most Influential Architecture titles” by John Hill (Prestel Publishing).

Unfortunately there are a few editorial inaccuracies in the book, at times assigning the wrong originating publisher (eg Presence of the Past and Genius Loci), and the attribution of Architectural Design (AD was the magazine side of the publishing house), as the publisher of The Manhattan Transcripts which it was Academy Editions. But otherwise, super happy to see this collection.

Though they were before my time professionally, they were books and authors, movements and exhibitions that I grew up around, texts that I later read and re-read while at the AA, and copies that my father and I would discuss in later years. He had his favourites, and several of these developed into subsequent titles, monographs, and larger works which went on to define the architect’s work.

The books featured are:
📘Genius Loci; Christian Norberg-Schulz
📘Urban Space; Rob Krier
📘The Manhattan Transcripts; Bernard Tschumi
📘The Language of Post-Modern Architecture; Charles Jencks
📘The Presence of the Past - The First International Exhibition of Architecture - Venice Biennale 80; Paolo Portoghesi et al.
📘The Architecture of the City; Aldo Rossi (not illustrated)

And including two co-editions:
📘Architecture Without Architects; Bernard Rudovsky [co-edition with MOMA]
📘Delirious New York; Rem Koolhaas (not illustrated - someone took our copy 😢) [co-edition with Monacelli and OUP]

A wonderful visit from my author who was visiting from Germany. We spent a wonderful afternoon catching up and discussing the new edition of the Seeds book that we will be publishing next year. Neither of us can believe that we have known each other for 20 years. He left with some copies of co-editions of Seeds and Fruit that were published in other languages - the Spanish one that he is holding up was published by

I’m not sure if there’s a collective noun for a group of publishers? Perhaps an Edit of Publishers?

Sitting among the books that changed my life, and the course of my publishing career. This figurine was a present from my author Wolfgang Stuppy who commissioned his neighbour extraordinaire to craft me out of sugar!

Pollen was published 20 years ago, with the books Seeds and Fruit following in rapid succession. The books were groundbreaking, record-breaking, and multi-award winning, with over 120,000 copies sold and translated into over 10 languages.

Spent a wonderful day catching up with my author Rob Kesseler who is behind the groundbreaking series of books we published on Pollen, Seeds and Fruit with Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. I sent Rob home with a small mountain of books - all translations of his works in French, Spanish, German, Korean, Japanese, American and others! I can’t believe that we’ve been working together for over 20 years.

Finally the official announcement that our distributor GMC has moved its warehousing and fulfilment to Wiley. As of 1st September, all Papadakis book orders will be fulfilled by Wiley.

We went through a disastrous ordeal over the past year when our previous warehouse Orca left months' worth of stock left undistributed at their warehouses which severely affected our Christmas sales.

Looking forward to working with the fast, efficient, and well experienced operation that is Wiley.

Alexandra Papadakis writes on the hugely important role of Dr Andreas Papadakis, Academy Editions, and Architectural Design Magazine (AD) in being the first to present the Deconstruction movement into the world of architecture in 1988.

Dezeen's deconstructivism series has overlooked the role publisher and editor Dr Andreas Papadakis played in defining the movement, according to his daughter Alexandra Papadakis.

Painting the body provides spiritual protection and designs come in a rich variety of designs. Some provides a symbolic recognition of a person’s position or status at a particular time in their lives, so there are designs for naming ceremonies, styles of painting appropriate for war or for mourning, and the different tribes each have their own patterns, styles and designs.

One of the most immediately recognisable is the swirling traditional Yudjá design, used on the face, the body and on ceramics and gourds, which imitates a wave in the water, reflecting their status as people of the river. Kayapó and Xinguano design styles are also very characteristic and immediately recognisable.

Many body paint designs are specific to certain rituals, and of these the most common are stylised designs in the form of birds, animals, fish, or trees and plants. Amongst the Xinguanos, snake, humming bird and butterflies are frequent, while the Kayapó often reproduce stylised botanical and zoological representations, for example seed pods and tortoise shells.

Afternoon tea at Mo Café, London is a veritable escape into the souk-like surroundings, complete with berber rugs, brightly coloured latticed hanging lamps and dainty tables. The tea fuses elements of British with North African, and chef Philippe Agnello has travelled the region picking up traditional Maghreb recipes along the way. Scones are served on a quirky cake stand consisting of different patterned plates accompanied by interesting sandwich offerings such as Moroccan chicken wrap, zaalouk and mechouia on toast and cheese briouats, followed by pastries dripping in honey and a moist fig macaroon. Teas come in a range of flavours including traditional mint, Hammam, which infuses green dates and red fruits, or a cardamom and citrus Fakir tea. These are all served in traditional brass teapots sourced by owner Mourad Mazouz.

We're counting the days until such places can reopen to visitors!

📚In the meantime, you can enjoy images of sumptuous teas and experiment with your own interpretations using the variety of recipes from our book.

Wind-dispersed fruits and seeds with wings are common among the gymnosperms and angiosperms. Depending on whether the diaspore is a seed or a fruit, the wing can be formed by the seed coat, the o***y wall, by the enlarged sepals of the flower or subtending leaves (bracts). Wings can be expressed as a single unilateral structure, a pair of opposite blades, a continuous ring surrounding the circumference of the diaspore, or multiple wings. The shape and arrangement of the wings determines the flight characteristics of a diaspore.

Images in order of appearance: Dipterocarpus costulatus (keruing kipas (Malay), 18.5cm long); Dryobalanops aromatica (kapur (Malay), 8.5cm long); Dipterocarpus grandiflorus (keruing belimbing (Malay), 25cm long); Dipterocarpus cornutus (keruing gombang (Malay), 15cm long); Shorea macrophylla (engkabang jantong (Malay), 12.5cm long). The members of the meranti family are a dominant component of lowland tropical rainforests and exploited for their valuable timber.
