In the days when people believed that demons, witches, and fairies were responsible for every bad thing that happened, from losing your keys to the plague, it was thought that making protective marks around areas where they could enter your house would stop them getting in to make mischief.
These marks, known today as ‘Apotropaic Marks’ were placed near doorways, hearths, chimneys, windows, and even in the privy. Llancaiach Fawr has literally hundreds of these marks in all parts of the house, in fact, experts have been amazed by the sheer number found in the manor house compared to other old buildings.
In this video, Alicia, one of our historic interpreters, gives a short presentation of just a few of the many marks found in this incredible old house.

Yn y dyddiau pan oedd pobl yn credu bod cythreuliaid, gwrachod, a thylwyth teg yn gyfrifol am bob peth drwg a ddigwyddodd, o golli'ch allweddi i'r pla, credwyd y byddai gwneud marciau amddiffynnol o amgylch ardaloedd lle gallent fynd i mewn i'ch tŷ yn eu hatal rhag mynd i mewn i wneud drygioni.
Gosodwyd y marciau hyn, a elwir heddiw yn ‘Apotropaic Marks’ ger drysau, aelwydydd, simneiau, ffenestri, a hyd yn oed yn y gyfrinach. Yn llythrennol mae gan Llancaiach Fawr gannoedd o'r marciau hyn ym mhob rhan o'r tŷ, mewn gwirionedd, mae arbenigwyr wedi eu syfrdanu gan y nifer enfawr a geir yn y maenordy o'i gymharu â hen adeiladau eraill.
Yn y fideo hwn, mae un o'n dehonglwyr hanesyddol, Alicia, yn rhoi cyflwyniad byr o ddim ond ychydig o'r marciau niferus a geir yn yr hen dŷ anhygoel hwn.

We have many visitors to our ghost tours who return year after year, sometimes several times a season, but if you've never visited during the day, it's a completely different experience.
Our renowned and award winning Historical Interpreters will take you around the manor in their guise as servants of Colonel Edward Prichard, the owner of Llancaiach Fawr during the 1640's, a turbulent time of the Civil War.

Llancaiach Fawr Manor has been awarded a prestigious accolade by Visit Wales. Llancaiach Fawr has received the ‘Best Told Story’ accolade in recognition of the excellent and unique experience offered to all visitors to the Manor House.

Llancaiach Fawr might have been a Living History Museum for over 25 years, but many locals remember it as a successful farm owned by the Williams family. Some of the oldest residents of the borough might even remember Sam Evans whose family lived here for 200 years until the 1930s.
Do you have any personal tales of Llancaiach before it became a museum, especially the paranormal kind?
We'd be glad to hear your spooky stories and they might even end up getting a mention on our famous Ghost Tours.

The next Ghost Tour is on Friday, 8th February. Give reception a ring on (01443) 412248 to book your place.

Due to several enquiries we have opened an evening slot for a Paranormal tour on Friday 8th February.
On our paranormal tours, we have our usual tales of the ghostly goings-on from over the years, but also approach it from a more scientific perspective. Lee and Alicia will have the EMF K2 meters out, the infra-red camera will be available for one member of the public to take as many photos as they wish, ion meters, digital recorders, geophone etc.
We always have fun and finish the tour by playing some of the EVP recordings that Lee and Alicia have made over the years.
Details and bookings from reception, please call 01443 412248.
See you there... 👻 👻 👻
