Self Defence and The Law

For anyone who's victim of crime, or who has been, there is a lack of information about what you can and cannot do in such a situation. Self defence would be one of those. Are you allowed to defend yourself in such a situation and how does the UK Law see such a situation. The following article should offer some insight into how this is dealt with and how they ensure those who are innocent are not prosecuted for such actions.

Self-Defence and the Prevention of Crime by The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS)

A useful article for those wanted to know the UK law on self defence. It states: "it is important to ensure that all those acting reasonably and in good faith to defend themselves, their family, their property or in the prevention of crime or the apprehension of offenders are not prosecuted for such action."

https://www.cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance/self-defence-and-prevention-crime

"Self defence and the prevention of crime originates from a number of different sources. Defence of the person is governed by the common law. Defence of property however, is governed by the Criminal Damage Act 1971. Arrest and the prevention of crime are governed by the Criminal Law Act 1967."

"Eden Project North re-imagines a seaside resort for the twenty-first century, using the stunning setting of Morecambe Bay as the inspiration to create a colony of shell-like pavilions and observatories that fuse natural wonder, health and well-being, entertainment and enlightenment."

"It will create a year-round must-visit destination of international reputation, and a cultural hub to help support and facilitate the needs and dreams of the Bay community and region. Eden North will be an exemplar of thoughtful and responsible design, supporting and facilitating the visitor experience as well as demonstrating efficient use of resources and responsible selection of materials and systems to achieve our goal of ‘regenerative sustainability’. "

Government Rejects Morecambe Bay Unitary Option

"The leaders of three neighbouring councils have expressed disappointment that Government has not selected The Bay as part of its local government reorganisation for Cumbria announced today."

"Coun Ann Thomson, leader of Barrow Borough Council, Coun Caroline Jackson, leader of Lancaster City Council ,and Coun Jonathan Brook, leader of South Lakeland District Council, said they were surprised by the Government’s choice of the option jointly proposed by Allerdale and Copeland councils for two new unitary authorities in Cumbria, ‘West Cumbria’ and ‘East Cumbria’."

Morecambe Eden Project Latest News

"New images of Eden Project North revealed as online community consultation opens into £125m Morecambe scheme"

"The site will be built over three levels, one of those below ground level, with priority given to using natural materials such as timber."

"The project will connect visitors to the world around them through several 'rhythms' - cultural, daily, tidal, lunar and solar, and seasonal."

"A walkway around the whole site will make the scheme easily accessible to the public while keeping the original look of the promenade."

"Transport links have been worked on with stakeholders including Lancaster City Council and Lancashire County Council, and include plans for sustainable transport as well as car travel - with a free park & ride shuttle bus planned from Junction 34 of the M6."

"Careful planning of the booking system would ensure a limit on visitor and car numbers per hour and per day - with a peak weekend of an estimated 7,500 visitors - far lower than festival weekends in Morecambe which can bring in up to 55,000 people."

"While the Cornwall site sees around 1m visitors a year, it is estimated Eden Project North will attract around 830,000."

"The team hopes to submit a planning application to the city council in the next few weeks, with - if all goes to plan - an official opening for the £125m scheme planned for summer 2024."

Sugarhouse nightclub keeps controversial name after students vote

https://www.lancs.live/news/lancashire-news/sugarhouse-nightclub-keeps-controversial-name-20898254

Quoted from the article:

"Sugarhouse, a former storage house for sugar, has been used as a student nightclub in Lancaster for decades."

"But it became the centre of a row over the building's past links with the slave trade, with many students calling for the club to be renamed."

"Slaves would have been used to pick the sugar cane in the West Indies before it was transported to the Sugarhouse building in Sugar House Alley, Lancaster, during the 18th and 19th centuries."

"Owing to its ties with the slave trade, it was suggested last year that the nightclub be renamed and a full debate was launched among the students."

"A spokesperson for the SU said: "The nightclub will remain named as Sugarhouse, but the SU plans to work with others to highlight Lancaster’s colonial history and are committed to investing and implementing educational programmes to all students and staff."

MORECAMBEOLOGY 220: Morecambe from the Air by Peter Wade

A new book by Historic England’s Allan Brodie (Liverpool University Press) shows an unusual view of the seaside. In a collection of views caught by Aerofilms from 1920 to 1953, England’s Seaside Heritage from the Air does what it says on the spine, giving us a seagull’s eye view of the seaside.

Two pictures give us aerial views of Morecambe. One shows the seafront and the newly-opened Midland Hotel from 1934. A second post-war view from 1949 again shows the Midland but now with the Super Swimming Stadium and re-built Central Pier beyond.

The book is divided into themed chapters including getting there, health, beaches, entertainments, fairs, gardens, places to stay, islands, the sea as a workplace, the seaside at war and places of memory and commemoration.

England’s Seaside Heritage from the Air is a hardback priced at £50 though probably more for those with a general interest in the seaside rather than Morecambe in particular.

A major incident was declared today after a gas explosion at a residential area in Heysham, Lancashire

16/05/2021

UPDATE: We remain at the scene of a suspected gas explosion on Mallowdale Avenue, Heysham.

We were called at 2.40am this morning (Sunday May 16th) to reports that a number of houses on the road had collapsed.

Our officers attended and found two houses collapsed and serious damage to a third property.

We can now confirm that sadly a young child has died as a result of the incident. The family have been informed and our thoughts remain with them at this distressing time.

Another four people, two men and two women have been taken to hospital. Two of those people have serious injuries.

A search of the site is still ongoing with Lancashire Fire and Rescue and North West Ambulance Service also in attendance.

A safety cordon has been put in place and nearby residents have been evacuated.

We are currently working with gas service engineers to make the area safe.

Road closures also remain in place and people are being asked to avoid the entire area while we deal with this ongoing incident.
