The leafy green in this soup is called D**g Han Cai, which can only be found in Sichuan around the cold months. It's super tasty in a toufu soup!

When l logged off from work today and said to my boys that I am gonna make some Chaoshou for tea, I instantly received two massive smiley faces 😄😍. I'm amazed every single time how much joy food brings to us, helping us stay happy, healthy and positive 🙌

Crepe for breakfast?

Jianbing are relatively similar to crepes, but much tastier! (at least, according to my husband). These are a popular breakfast option across China, especially in the North.

They're pretty quick and simple to make: batter made of wheat and grain flour,
eggs, crispy cuibing (type of cracker) for the filling, sauce (usually sweet bean), and various veg and possibly a bit of meat to top it off.

Amazing afternoon with some great friends and their (hand built) pizza oven!

As I'm lactose intolerant, cheese on my pizza doesn't cut it I'm afraid. So, pizza with a Sichuanese twist was added to the menu :P

Pizza dough, lao gan ma, chilli paste, sichuan pepper, garlic, sesame oil and seeds and parma ham, all cooked to perfection in the amazing hand crafted pizza oven and baked quickly to perfection 😋😍

My husband learnt two lessons the day we visited this small restaurant that sells 咔饼 (kabing; a type of flat bread stuffed with steamed meat in spiced rice flour) in the town I grew up in:

1) a new word in the dialect spoken in my hometown: 咔 (pronounced somewhat like 'car'), meaning 'to stuff into'.

2) that these taste absolutely amazing! (so much so that after a large amount of food not too long before he still couldn't resist ordering seconds! ).

凉拌豇豆茄子 Sauteed long beans and aubergine in a savory salad dressing - this starter was a hit whilst we were staying in Chengdu, Sichuan; my little man devoured an entire dish in one go and swiftly demanded another. Pretty great evidence on how good it tastes!

Lai Chaoshou 赖抄手

This shop selling these simple Chaoshou ( an amazingly tasty type of dumpling) opened way before I was born, and as I was growing up it became a favourite place to get some tasty eats!

When I was little there were 3 sisters running this family Chaoshou shop, today, they're all still there!

Three sisters for three different ways of eating the Chaoshou:
— in chill oil soup: perfect if you have a certain degree of spice tolerance;
— in a specially brewed broth: perfect for little people and those with no spice tolerance;
— in garlic and chilling sauce: perfect if you want a strong kick on your taste buds.

The only difference between then and now is how life has left its mark on all of us; the 3 sisters who are running the shop are now all elderly, and I am no long a school girl.... But I still love Chaoshou, and they still cook it the way they always have :) 😍

泡粑 (Pao ba) is a popular breakfast choice in Sichuan, it is a type of steamed bun made of rice power.

The variety shown in the picture is from a shop which has been open for more than 50 years, and a favorite stop throughout my childhood.

Aside from being tasty, it also brings to my mind the dedication and humbleness of the generations that have run this simple shop.

It has been truly amazing to be able to sample this again and share this delicacy and memories with my little one.

This is the Sichuan pepper tree 花椒树 behind my Uncle's house in Sichuan, China. It will be ready to harvest in a few months time. One thing I'd love to grow in the UK is a Sichuan pepper tree. If you know where I can get such a plant, please DM me 😀

This one snuck up on us!

Work has been terribly busy, so what a surprise to wake up today and realise it is already Mid-Autumn Festival!

Quick dash to the shops for ingredients, and I forgot the colouring... Luckily my boy came to the rescue with a suggestion of using sprinkles! These Yunanese Mooncakes 云腿月饼 turned out quite well 😍😋

Today I actually managed to get off work on time! So, my little chef and I prepared for our tea together. 🍲🍲🍲

Whilst doing all the cooking, we learnt that to cook good food, we need to be patient and able to wait. 👍 Little sparkles like this in day-to-day life will help us continue to grow and enjoy the journey life presents.😇

Our little man has had his last day at pre-school today. So many bittersweet emotions. Cannot believe how fast he is growing. 💞

We made a little cake today to celebrate this milestone 🎉🎂 and look forward to him starting big school after the summer break.

Life has gotten very busy lately so I haven't had much chance to cook too often. But whenever I do manage to, it makes me very happy and appreciative of the joy cooking and food brings. Over the weekend, we had another harvest of beetroot from our vegetable patch. We were over the moon with how much beetroot we managed to harvest and, of course, with what we then were able to turn them into - a simple, healthy, and delicious stir-fried dish. Yummy!! 😋😋😋

Happiness is the first mini harvest of the year 😁: one courgette, one beetroot, and fair amount of spring onions. We decided to cook them straight away into a yummy homemade chicken veggie wrap! It's an amazing feeling to grow and cook something from scratch together with your little one, and of course we all enjoyed devouring these in record speed! 😋😋😋

What to do on a rainy afternoon? Well, we spent it making some yummy scones! 😋😋😋 Little chef did most of the hard work and of course had the most fun too, not only devouring most of the delightful treats himself but also sharing them with friends and family 😍

We went to a local park today. Nature has been kind to us with dryish weather and some yummy wild garlic shoots to complement tonight's tea. I made it into a simple veggie stir-fry, using things I could find in my fridge. Those little things often make me appreciate life more. 💞💞

Spring seems finally arrived at our garden 😍. This cherry tree was pretty sad for the past a couple of years. This is the first time it looks happy and healthy🌸🌸🌸. The TLC efforts in the past really does pay off. 💪

Doufunao 豆腐脑, a very popular snack from Leshan. A warming starchy soup base with silken tofu, topped up with crunchy pastry bits, chilli oil, sichuan pepper and a selection of seasonings. It's warming, smooth, crunchy, spicy and fragrant. I made this for the first time here in the UK, and it really reminds of the taste of childhood and home. 😋🏡💕

Can I just say it's an odd feeling when your kitchen is being taken over😜? My little chef almost completely took over the kitchen and made these after he came home from school today. Can't really complain, I know, but it's a weird feeling in a positive way I guess. 😅
