Trending Video of A bank client who reportedly disappeared from the bank premises following accusations of committing fraud. โ€“ Ka Nsemtvgh

A bank customer accused of committing 'fraud' reportedly vanished while inside the bank, causing confusion among the staff and officers.

As per a source, the peculiar incident, recounted by a user identified as on X, occurred during the morning at a branch where the customer had come to raise concerns about his blocked account.

The account had been marked with a Post No Debit (PND) and an 'Arrest on Sight' directive due to suspected fraudulent activities.

Upon verifying the customer's identity, an official informed that they had informed the authorities and requested the mobile policeman (MOPOL) on duty to detain him until the arrival of the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) and her team.

The client was getting restless in the bank lobby and signaling to leave, so we referred him to the MOPOL on duty accompanying him.

The client continued to argue and made threats to leave, but the MOPOL kept a close watch on him.

Eliminating the betting tax will not have any effect on the economy. โ€“ Says Dr. Ato Forson

The nominee for Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, expressed that eliminating the 10% betting tax would not make a substantial difference to the nation's economy.

He mentioned that the tax only brings in about 50 million cedis yearly, labeling it as an insignificant tax.

When questioned by Atiwa West MP Lauretta Korkor Asante during his screening on January 13th, Dr. Forson stressed that although the government aims to collect more revenue, raising taxes is not always the answer.

I have researched the Ghanaian economy extensively, and I can confidently state that Ghana has significant capacity to enhance tax revenue collection.

There is no need to necessarily raise taxes in order to generate revenue. The key is to enhance adherence to tax regulations.

I will collaborate with the GRA and the Tax Policy Unit of the Ministry of Finance to improve adherence in order to boost revenue generation in the medium run.

My goal, once sanctioned, is to raise tax income from 13.8% of GDP to approximately 16โ€“18%, enabling us to benchmark against other countries.

Dr. Forson reiterated the governmentโ€™s dedication to eliminating specific taxes, aligning with President John Dramani Mahamaโ€™s pledge during the campaign.

Certain taxes are failing to produce the expected revenue. To illustrate, the trader levy only generates under 50 million Ghana cedis each year.

This tax is considered burdensome and eliminating 50 million Ghana cedis from it would not considerably impact the economy, especially if spending adjustments are implemented.

Furthermore, the Parliament's Appointments Committee will screen John Jinapor, the Energy Minister nominee, and Dr. Dominic Ayine, the Attorney-General nominee.

The E-Levy will be scrapped in my first budget as Minister. โ€“ Ato Forson.

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the nominated Finance Minister, has reaffirmed his dedication to eliminating the Electronic Transactions Levy (E-Levy) and other troublesome taxes, in alignment with President John Mahama's pledge within 120 days.

Dr Forson contends that the E-Levy jeopardizes Ghana's advancement towards embracing a cashless system.

The levy, initiated in 2022, imposed a 1.5% fee on electronic transactions surpassing GHโ‚ต100 daily.

Despite being later decreased to 1%, it continues to face widespread criticism as regressive and burdensome for the people of Ghana.

While undergoing questioning on Monday, 13 January, Dr Forson emphatically restated his unwavering stance, ensuring the elimination of the tax in the initial budget proposed by the new government.

The E-Levy does not fall under the category of a direct tax, indirect tax, or excise tax. As a tax professional, I am uncertain how to categorize the E-Levy.

However, it is important to acknowledge that the E-Levy does generate some income.

Nevertheless, the E-Levy hinders our advancement towards a cashless economy and financial technology. It is crucial to eliminate the E-Levy.

He stated:

I have previously expressed my intention to eliminate the E-Levy if given the chance. I want to reaffirm that stance.

If sanctioned, in the initial budget, I will declare the abolition of the E-Levy.

The President Mahama administration made a commitment to this in our 120-day plan, and we remain committed to it.

Dr. Forson also indicated that the removal of the E-Levy would be coupled with spending reductions to address the revenue shortfall, emphasizing:

It is not always necessary to focus solely on increasing revenue. Why not consider reducing expenses instead? Eliminate the E-Levy, do not substitute it, and make corresponding spending cuts.

Furthermore, Dr. Forson reiterated the intention to revoke the 10% betting tax.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who is set to become Ghana's Finance Minister, has pledged to eliminate the betting tax in his initial budget if he is appointed.

During his appearance before the Parliament's Appointments Committee on Monday, January 13, Dr. Forson stated that the existing betting tax has not achieved its goals and should be done away with.

I am adamant about eliminating the betting tax, and I plan to remove it in my initial budget as Finance Minister because it has proven ineffective.

He clarified that the tax did not produce the anticipated income and merely imposed a significant strain on the betting industry without helping the overall economy.

Apart from his position on the betting tax, Dr. Forson reiterated his objection to the contentious E-levy.

He stated that his stance on the levy stays the same, and he will strive to establish a more enduring and efficient tax structure that fosters economic development while reducing undue burdens on the public.

Dr. Forson's remarks show his dedication to restructuring Ghana's tax regulations in a manner that fosters sustainable economic progress and tackles the issues important to both the public and businesses.

Unknown individuals destroyed the statue of Akufo-Addo at Effie Nkwanta. โ€“ Ka Nsemtvgh

Unknown individuals vandalized the sculpture of ex-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, which is located at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi.

The statue, revealed on November 6, 2024, as a tribute to Nana Addo, was first harmed on its left leg in December 2024.

During that period, a large hole was identified but was promptly fixed by concerned citizens.

However, in the early morning of January 13, 2025, the sculpture was discovered in ruins, with considerable damage from the head to the knee. The incident reportedly took place at around 1:30 am.

Authorities have launched a probe to identify and capture the individuals responsible for this action.

The reason behind it remains uncertain, even though the sculpture has been a topic of discussion since it was set up.

Some locals doubt its significance amidst unmet government commitments and halted regional initiatives.

Certain individuals accuse the current NDC administration of encouraging their supporters to demolish the statue of the former President of Ghana.
