The launderette was running as a successful business and started trading mid-1990s. Sadly over the years the demand for the business decreased and became less profitable each year. With a combination of rising bills, outdated machinery and minimal profit, the decision was made to cease trading in February 2024, so the ground floor is currently a vacant unused space.

A CALL to convert a former Haverfordwest launderette to housing to provide โ€œa much-needed low-cost homeโ€ has been given the go-ahead by county planners. In an application to Pembrokeshire County Council, through agent Mathew Hitches Architectural Services, a change of use of Hill Street Laundry,...

๐Ÿ”ด Support for victims

THE CASE of Alexander Campbell, who was jailed this month o for attacking police officers responding to a domestic assault in Hakin, has led to renewed calls for greater awareness of the support available to victims of domestic abuse in Pembrokeshire.

Police were attending the address to protect a woman who had been assaulted when the incident escalated, leaving both officers and the victim injured.

Following the sentencing, Temporary Superintendent Louise Harries said officers were โ€œfocused on protecting that victim and bringing the offender to justice,โ€ adding that the custodial sentence would โ€œprotect the victim from further harm.โ€

While the court outcome sends a clear message that violence โ€” including against emergency workers โ€” will not be tolerated, police and support services say the case also highlights how many victims continue to suffer in silence.

Domestic abuse is not limited to physical violence. It can include controlling behaviour, intimidation, threats, emotional harm and coercive control.

THE WELSH SECRETARY Jo Stevens has said Wales is heading for a โ€œbright 2026โ€, pointing to major UK Government investment in jobs, energy, transport and public services.

Looking back on 2025, she said the UK Government had delivered โ€œgenerational investmentโ€ in Wales โ€” including one of the biggest infrastructure announcements in Welsh history.

๐Ÿ”‹ Nuclear and AI jobs
In November it was confirmed that Wylfa on Anglesey will host the UKโ€™s first small nuclear reactors, a project expected to create thousands of high-quality jobs while boosting energy security.

That announcement was followed by plans for two AI Growth Zones in North and South Wales, expected to create more than 8,000 jobs, alongside ยฃ10 million to support the semiconductor industry along the M4 corridor.

๐Ÿš† Rail investment
Ms Stevens also highlighted ยฃ445 million for Welsh rail, announced earlier this year, aimed at tackling years of underinvestment. The funding is expected to improve services, boost connectivity and support economic growth, with work due to start on the major regeneration of Cardiff Central Station.

๐Ÿ’ท Cost of living and pay
The UK Government says households across Wales have benefited from a ยฃ150 reduction in the energy price cap, increases to Universal Credit and the state pension, and a rise in the National Minimum Wage, putting more money in the pockets of around 160,000 of the lowest-paid workers.

๐Ÿ‘ถ Child poverty and public services
Around 69,000 children in Wales are expected to benefit from the removal of the two-child benefit limit, announced in December.

The Welsh Government has also received a record budget settlement, which ministers say provides more funding for the NHS, schools, local services and infrastructure.

๐Ÿญ Port Talbot support
Support for steelworkers in Port Talbot will continue into 2026, with funding for retraining, job-seeking and new opportunities. Just before Christmas, a further ยฃ22 million was added to the Port Talbot Transition Board fund, taking the UK Government contribution to ยฃ102 million.

๐Ÿ”ฎ Whatโ€™s coming in 2026?
Looking ahead, the Welsh Secretary said:
โ€ข Two Freeports in Anglesey and South West Wales will become operational
โ€ข Further rail upgrades and new stations are planned
โ€ข Continued investment linked to Tata Steelโ€™s new electric arc furnace
โ€ข Ongoing support for workers and local communities

Speaking ahead of the new year, Jo Stevens said Wales now has โ€œtwo governments working togetherโ€ and promised to โ€œmove further and fasterโ€ in 2026.

She added that, outside politics, she hopes to see Wales qualify for another major football tournament and head to the World Cup in North America this summer โšฝ

Community spirit shines bright at Nacro Silverdale this Christmas โœจ

THE POWER of community has been on full display in Pembrokeshire this festive season, with Nacro Silverdale overwhelmed by an outpouring of Christmas generosity.

Residents at the emergency accommodation project have been treated to a wave of kindness from local organisations and donors, helping to bring warmth, dignity and cheer at what can be a difficult time of year.

Special thanks have been paid to the Haverfordwest Soroptimist Group, Bluestone, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Johnston, along with many others who donated gifts and support.

Rhian Tansey, West Wales Services Lead for Nacro, said the response had been extraordinary: "Weโ€™ve been gifted so much, we donโ€™t know where to start. These donations have come at exactly the right time and really show the strength of community spirit in Pembrokeshire. Our residents deserve happiness, and this proves they matter.โ€

The donations will make a real difference across Nacroโ€™s Pembrokeshire projects, bringing much-needed joy and reassurance to people who need it most this Christmas.

There was also praise for Nacroโ€™s frontline staff, managers and project workers, who have gone above and beyond to make Christmas as special as possible for those they support.

๐Ÿ‡ Haiti Couleurs storms to Welsh Grand National victory at Chepstow ๐Ÿ†

HAITI Couleurs powered to an emphatic victory in the Welsh Grand National at Chepstow on Boxing Day, delivering a huge result for Welsh trainer Rebecca Curtis and sending the home crowd into celebration.

The Newport-based trainer watched her horse dominate the famous staying race, pulling clear in the closing stages to seal a superb Welsh success in one of the biggest fixtures of the National Hunt calendar.

There was strong Pembrokeshire interest in the race, with champion jockey Sean Bowen on board. The Pembrokeshire rider, who was crowned champion jockey last season after riding 180 winners, produced a confident and assured ride in testing winter conditions.

Bowen kept Haiti Couleurs well positioned throughout before asking him to stretch clear late on, underlining why he continues to be regarded as one of Walesโ€™ top jockeys.

๐Ÿฅˆ Oโ€™Connell finished second at 9/1
๐Ÿฅ‰ Deafening Silence was third at 28/1
๐Ÿ… Livin On Luco took fourth at 14/1

The Welsh Grand National once again drew a large crowd to Chepstow, with racing fans treated to a dominant performance and a result that keeps the famous trophy firmly in Welsh hands.

Our Story

At the Herald, we cover stories from the whole of Pembrokeshire, bringing you all the news and issues that affect you in our wonderful county. The Herald will be free of political bias and will be written for the people and from the people. We welcome stories from everyone in the county and will give everyone a fair chance to have their say on issues large and small that affect our day-to-day lives. The Herald promises to report fairly and accurately on the issues and stories that arise. Launching a brand new newspaper title could be seen as a brave venture in this uncertain economic climate, but we at the Herald see a growing need for a county-wide voice for you, the readers. What we promise you is a champion for your concerns and causes, a forum to voice issues, and a place of record for the news within the county. This will range from the burning local issues, through reports from the courts, decisions and discussions from local government, or โ€“by no means least - the day-to-day stories of the people of Pembrokeshire. We will endeavour to report on the happy events which take place in all our towns and communities, from the smallest function to the most high profile events. We promise to report on stories throughout the county; whether in Haverfordwest, Tenby, Milford Haven, Neyland, Pembroke and Pembroke Dock, Narberth, Crymych, Fishguard and Goodwick, St Davidโ€™s, Kilgetty, Newport, or any of the smaller communities and villages. We will also not shirk from covering and investigating the often less palatable aspects of life; a newspaper needs to reflect every aspect of life in the area it serves, a mirror to the busy lives we all lead. We want the Herald to be the first thing you, the reader, turns to when they want to know what is happening in Pembrokeshire. We hope you will join us.
