The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have carried out a series of ramp checks across the UK in a combined operation to spot potential illegal charters.

Teams from the UK and US carried out ‘ramp checks’ across a variety of airfields from where N-registered aircraft regularly operate.

This week we’re welcoming Major George ‘Smokey’ Bacon MBE TD, former CEO of the British Air Display Association (BADA), to talk about the state of the UK air display industry!

George has had an action-packed career in an assortment of flying roles, as well as being a CAA Air Accident Investigator. Alongside his involvement in BADA, he’s also Chairman of the Army Historic Flight Charitable Trust, a historic aircraft display pilot, a Flying Display Director, an active Ambassador for Aerobility Charity and a broadcaster and airshow commentator.

That should give us plenty to talk about - and we’re also looking forward to finding out why he’s known as ‘Smokey’! Tune in at 7.30pm on Thursday 10 October.

Nathan is a former Royal Navy pilot and Qualified Flying Instructor, and he was the Fleet Air Arm F-35 test pilot responsible for carrying out the first launch and recovery from the HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier. We’ll hear about his extensive flying and testing experience and how that’s shaped his career, ultimately leading to his interest in the future of pilot training.
