– Food waste & turkey/chicken carcasses

During the festive season, excess food waste becomes a significant concern. At Christmas, the abundance of indulgent meals often leads to leftovers and discarded food items.

To combat this issue, consider planning meals thoughtfully, estimating portion sizes, and embracing creative ways to repurpose leftovers.

Some ideas below:

1.Turkey soup: Use leftover turkey carcass to make hearty soup with veg, herbs, and noodles or rice.
2.Christmas leftover casserole: Combine leftover turkey, stuffing and veg in a baking dish. Top with mash potato and bake until golden.
3.Bubble and squeak: Mash together leftover roasted vegetables and potatoes, then pan fry until crispy.
4.Christmas cob: layer turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and any other leftovers into a cob for a festive sandwich, add side of gravy for dipping.
5.Risotto: Combine leftovers in a pan, add arborio rice and gradually add stock until the rice absorbs. Enjoy

Donating excess food to local food banks during the Christmas season is a compassionate and impactful way to address both food waste and support those in need. By sharing the abundance of the season, you not only help combat food waste but also spread joy and solidarity within the community during this festive time.

Details of local food banks can be found below:

If you still have food waste left over, that you can’t use, then remember to put your excess food into a caddy liner, before placing it in your kerb side food caddy!

Just on a final note, for those residents who don’t want to switch to a nut roast but who want to buy a more ethically-sourced chicken or turkey, then buying one that has a higher welfare standard or buying a male chicken/turkey (formerly known as a capon) are options.

Over 27,000 Derbyshire residents have now successfully registered to continue to use all of our 9 household waste recycling centres. ♻️.
The registration scheme is being introduced to make things fairer and more cost-effective for Derbyshire residents by helping to reduce the amount of waste that is being brought to Derbyshire recycling centres from outside of the county.
There’s still time to register. We won’t be turning away unregistered vehicles immediately but we’re urging residents to sign-up as soon as possible. There’s a load of helpful information to explain and help with the registration process. We apologise for initial technical problems which are now resolved. Please read this info before registering – thank you. And remember that each Derbyshire resident over the age of 17 can register up to two vehicles (camper vans are included). Residents registering all other vans to dispose of their household waste will be required to register each time they wish to visit and van access will last 24 hours. Derbyshire Dales District Council has announced its bin collections schedule for the Christmas and New Year period.

The most significant change is for Dales residents who usually get waste and recycling collections on Wednesdays. As Christmas Day falls on a Wednesday this year, their Christmas collection is brought forward to Saturday 21 December, while what would have been a New Year’s Day collection is a day later on Thursday 2 January.

Usual Monday and Tuesday collections will remain unchanged over the festive period, while Thursday and Friday collections will be one day later than usual.

This means the District Council's waste and recycling contractor Serco will be working on Saturdays: 21 December, 28 December and 4 January.

Dales residents are asked to note that no additional household waste will be collected, so are advised to make sure all their household waste is contained in their grey bin with the lid shut, or, for homes on a sack collection, in four standard sized black sacks.

Food waste collections will continue to happen weekly and recycling collections fortnightly over the festive period.

To help prioritise household waste and recycling collections at this busy time of year, all garden waste collections are suspended from Monday 30 December to Friday 10 January inclusive.

However, Dales residents who subscribe to the District Council's garden waste scheme will be able to recycle their real Christmas tree by placing it at the edge of their property on their green/recycling day between 13 January and 7 February. Trees need to be cut down to no longer than 5 feet, with all decorations and any pot removed.
