Our Year with You - Supporting Your Business with Health and Safety Know-How

I hope you don’t mind but we’ve decided to use our blog this month to blow a little fanfare for ourselves.
It’s not to come over as big-headed, it’s just that (and I know you’ll find this difficult to believe) it seems there are people who don’t know what we can do and we thought this may be a good way to tell you.

It’s been a busy one and we appreciate the support you’ve given us in 2020, let’s look forward to 2021 together.

Employee safety is high on every company’s agenda right now, for obvious reasons.

But, whilst employers and health and safety officers have been busy making workplaces COVID secure and taking all the necessary steps to ensure the safety of staff at home and returning to work, other jobs that are usually taken care of as a matter of course may have fallen through the cracks.

One of these is the routine testing and maintenance of electrical, plant and other equipment.

It is quite feasible that with many people away from the workplace for months on end, if these tests and checks were due to be carried out during lockdown, they may have been forgotten or pushed back due to the prioritisation of other things or costs.

The importance of regularly testing and maintaining equipment cannot be underestimated as they are key to ensuring the safety of people and the building.

When did you last test things like electrics, water and other equipment and machinery?

A survey of 1,000 adults across the UK has revealed that 27.6% of serious injuries happened at work.

Men are more at risk than women, with a third having suffered a serious injury at work, compared with 18% of women. Younger workers were also more likely to suffer an accident at work with, on average, 36.6% of those aged 18 to 44 having suffered an accident at work compared with 13.3% of those aged 45 and over.

There is a definite ‘back to school’ feeling in the air this week - not just for parents and schoolchildren either!

After what the UK has been through over the last six months, many business owners are seeing September as an opportunity to hit that reset button and focus on making the last few months of this year the best they can be.

Please don’t forget about health and safety in all this though. Review all of your certificates and risk assessments and ensure they are up-to-date. Also make sure that staff have access to any training they need to safely carry out their additional duties.

With the travel landscape changing daily thanks to the Coronavirus outbreak, businesses need to ensure their knowledge remains up to date with regards to travel restrictions and the self-isolation rules that are in force on return to the UK from some destinations.

As team members return to work, it is imperative that workplaces conduct thorough Return to Work risk assessments that cover travel to other countries. Staff should also be made aware of the Government advice available and where to look for guidelines on travel and symptoms.

Did you know that one in four serious injuries happen in the workplace?

As employers start to bring people back into the workplace, possibly doing jobs or tasks they wouldn't ordinarily do or in new roles, it is important to ensure that the appropriate training is given and risk assessments are carried out.

Our August blog will go into this in a bit more detail and offer practical advice.

In the meantime, if you would like any health and safety advice around this, please do get in touch.
