✨ Margate Radio is super excited to be represented at We Out Here Festival as part of their highlights of community radios.

For this occasion, Rob and Raven (Speakers Corner Quartet) have created a wonderful collaborative hour of sonic dream channelling, that you will able to listen to on .fm from 7 am until 8 am tomorrow morning. ✨

Robert Stillman* is a composer and multi-instrumentalist from the northeast United States, currently based in Margate, UK. His music juxtaposes the archaic with the futuristic, incorporating influences of Jazz, Minimalism, American Folk music, and experimental electronic music to create a sound.

Robert has a monthly Sunday morning show on Margate Radio. He approaches and creates each show as a presentation of live improvised experimentation. Every show is original material with no two shows being the same.

*Robert has performed his music at venues and festivals throughout the North America and Europe, both as a solo act, and ensembles of various instrumentations, supporting artists such as The Smile (Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood and Sons of Kemet’s Tom Skinner), Deerhoof, Hauschka, Yo La Tengo, Dirty Projectors, and Casiotone for the Painfully Alone/Advance Base.

In addition to his own music, he currently plays with Tom Skinner (Voices of Bishara), and Dave Okumu. He has also collaborated with acts such as Grizzly Bear, Ghost Poet, Luke Temple (Here We Go Magic), Hiss Golden Messenger, Kit Downes, and Adem Ilhan. He is also part of the collaborative band Bog Bodies with drummer Sean Carprio and guitarist Anders Holst.

✨ The new Sounds Of Our Lives show is now live on the website and on Mixcloud.

It is not another show about sound, but a regular series of sonic encounters mixing into the vibrational currents of activism and social justice.
The show is not only about listening to, but listening through, each episode takes a discursive approach where the hosts and special guests explore issues such as environmental justice, migration, disability justice, gentrification and housing rights.

Sounds Of Our Lives is hosted by artist, curator and activist Cecilia Wee and Matt Lewis, musician and activist.

Ahead of their concert on the 18th of April , will be live from the booth tomorrow at 2pm and will answer questions as well as play some music.

“The duo’s love of archival recordings and recovered manuscripts is clear across the variety of their song choices, from the beautifully tentative Feygele – Little Bird, adapted from a popular Russian song, to the twisted epic majesty of Flowers for Innocence, based on the Transylvanian Gyöngyvirágos. Ter-Berg and Curzon never smother the folk origins of their influences but explore them kaleidoscopically, exploding the potential of their colours and patterns through their instruments’ long bows, plucks and scrapes” Jude Rogers for the Guardian

We’re looking for someone to join our pool of voluntary producers at the station. ✨

The responsibilities of a producer are:
Working closely with our hosts to create our live broadcasts at the weekend Looking after the audio quality and controlling the levels for speech and music Preparing files for our archive

The role would be a good opportunity to learn about radio broadcast, including DJ equipment, recording voice and music, and streaming live on the internet. You don’t need prior knowledge of this, just enthusiasm for volunteering at a community radio station. The booth has been set up with ease of use in mind so after a couple of training sessions you’ll be good to dive in.

⭐ We are back ⭐

Thank you all for your support and we are getting ready to return.
With your help, we reached our target and raised £11,365 (£10,264 after taxes) during our community crowdfunding campaign and we were able to invest in new equipment and other running costs such as licensing, website, producing costs...
To remind you, Margate Radio CIC (Community Interest Company) is a volunteer-run, independent, licensed internet radio station founded in 2020. Margate Radio is a platform to create and distribute content that celebrates and connects our seaside town Margate in Kent, England.
We broadcast new content on weekends, with previous broadcasts by regular hosts available for free.
Our values come from our representative community survey in 2023, and are simply “Community,” “Diversity,” and “More.”

We will be back next weekend to soft launch the new equipment, so share the news and tune in.

You can also subscribe to our newsletter to know a bit more about the line-up and other info.

WE DID IT!

Thanks to all of you who donated, shared and campaigned alongside us, we have hit our target!

This money will allow us to replace the studio equipment and will pay for overheads for one year.

We’ll keep the campaign open for another week so anyone that wanted to donate still can. Whatever extra funds we receive will go toward overheads for year two.

We’re looking forward to getting back on the airwaves, stay tuned for updates.

Huge love to all of the Margate Radio family that have made this possible.

Margate Radio loves you and you have shown us so much love in return. Thank you.

Dan Carson () host of Broken Window on Margate Radio

"I’m amazingly grateful to Margate Radio for giving me an opportunity to challenge myself creatively and to push myself well out of my comfort zone (broadcasting live is something I’d never thought I’d be able to do). The station punches well above its weight and I’m delighted to contribute in my small way amongst dozens of other talented locals. Margate Radio is already a great community platform and its accessibility and reach gives it potential to amplify all the other incredible stuff happening in and by the town. An absolute treasure!

The radio station has grown steadily and solidly since its birth. The radio station is NOT just for the ‘In crowd’ or ‘cool kids’ of Margate-which is what some chose to believe. Paul and team have taken time to reach out and curate shows from people across the community. The beauty of a local radio station is the community associations and programs which can be implemented through collaborative associations with local people (colleges, community groups etc) whether creative, social, political or just for the sheer joy!"

Message from Reggy Brown () pictured here with James Jordan Johnson ()

"Hey, this is Reggy Brown, host of the spin on Margate Radio. You might have heard my voice every second Saturday morning and I'm here to say Margate Radio needs your help. Currently, the future of Margate Radio is unstable and we don't have any gear to do live radio anymore.

For those of you that don't know, Margate Radio is a community station and it's volunteer run with amazing volunteers behind the scenes and it's listener funded; we really need your help to keep community stations alive. The reason why Margate Radio is so important to me is because at a time during lockdown where I felt disconnected from where I was living, as a listener I really felt connected listening to everyone's shows and the eclecticness of different communities. I was really excited to step in and live in a town where I felt like everyone could be heard. So then I became a DJ, and now I get to connect with people over music and it gives everyone a space in a world that feels kind of isolating sometimes.

So I'm here to say please, we need your help. You can help by heading on over to www.margateradio.co.uk and make sure to sign up to our newsletter. Keep an eye out with how you can help, or if you'd like to donate, please feel free to do so. This community station really brings me joy and I hope it's brought you a lot of joy listening in. So yeah, keep community stations alive."
