🔊 THIS IS A CALL-OUT! 🔊
We want to showcase artistic responses from disabled and chronically ill people to their experiences in lockdown. Have you struggled to get food? Has important information been made accessible to you? Does self-isolation differ much from your daily life? We want to hear from you! All kinds of art are welcome. You do not need to be a professional artist. Your story is important and your voice should be heard.

Today we have released Common People: Breaking the Class Ceiling in UK Publishing.

The report by Professor Katy Shaw Northumbria University highlights the pervasive barriers facing working-class writers and looks at what the publishing industry, subsidised sector and government can do to break the class ceiling.

The report summarises the experiences and barriers faced by the working-class writers who were part of a national project that grew out of the ground-breaking anthology, Common People edited by Kit de Waal and published by Unbound a year ago today.

Working with the other literature development agencies, the project was designed to identify brilliant unpublished working-class writers, to publish them in the anthology, and to offer them a 12-month professional development programme which would support their entry into the industry.

What we sought to do with both the anthology and the project was change the conversation we have about class and access to the publishing industry – let’s be open about the challenges writers and the industry face and what we can do about it.
