Today we welcomed James Riding from the to to meet up with the students from New Bridge Academy who are currently on a year-long work placement with SharpFutures

When we visited two weeks ago the students met James and other members of the team and were set a creative brief to make a piece of content aimed at engaging parents with CBeebies, under the theme of ‘Bedtime and sleep’

Today the students presented their creative work to James and talked through their ideas generation, storyboarding and content choices, getting feedback and advice on how to pitch. The presentations and content created were all excellent - everyone did brilliantly, creating content that was professional, on brand and perfectly following the brief. We’ll share the examples soon!

A huge thank you to James Riding for taking the team to meet the students and give some invaluable industry feedback.

It was also the last day that Thalaya Darr will be here for the New Bridge Academy placement -a huge thank you for her superb work as SharpFutures education lead over the last couple of years!

Yesterday we spent the day at with the group of students from New Bridge Academy that are currently on a year-long creative digital work placement with

The day was an opportunity for the students to find out more about the job roles and tasks that go into supporting the broadcast and social media output of BBC brands such as CBeebies, Bitesize, Newsround and CBBC. We started off at Quay House in the morning and met some of the members that are currently working at the BBC.

They talked about the different skills sets and platforms they use to create content for the brands each day but also, really importantly, talked about their career pathways and the challenges of building a career as a creative, providing some essential advice for the students.

A huge thank you to BBC Production Manager Emma Laycock for facilitating the Quay House visit and being such a brilliant host! 🙌

After lunch we met with up with BBC Researcher Shona Thompson who took us across the piazza to and an amazing behind the scenes tour of the on-site BBC studios. The students went onto a set and met, as well as the presenters and crew, Dodge T Dog (Hacker’s younger brother)!

The tour then took the students to see the edit, audio and VFX suites of dock10’s post production facility!

It was a brilliant day & we are extremely grateful for all the staff that gave up some of their day to talk to the students about the opportunities for working in Greater Manchester’s creative sector

“I’ve been reflecting on the past year and how great it was for my career and probably one of the best for me so far.

Another unforgettable opportunity I had was working with Whisper as a runner on one of their upcoming game shows. I met lots of amazing people, both crew and contestants! Not only that, I gained further experience in the field I want to work in!

A big thank you to for the opportunity and to for letting me be part of such a great production!”

“I can’t believe I’m already over half way through my placement at Bradford 2025!

I have learnt so much and I am so grateful for the opportunities I’ve been able to get involved in — from attending merchandise shoots and exhibitions, to working behind the scenes on interviews with artists and talent, including Dynamo at RISE!

Here are a few things I’ve learnt so far!

🧠 Content creation and planning
✍🏼 Copy writing for posts, ads and articles
👥 Community management and monitoring engagement
✨ Web page creation
💸 Paid advertising on social media platforms

Conceptualising and executing a high engagement social media campaign with Lola Prior to build excitement for the start of Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, has been my favourite project so far!

Lola, Farah and I visited every postcode in Bradford, capturing photos of the local communities with holding a Bradford2025 scarf. These were shared on our social media channels in a creative ‘countdown’ style throughout December, leading up to 2025. I loved how the campaign was so community-focused, and showcased all areas of Bradford! 🩷💚💛

I have loved being a part of such a creative team at Bradford2025, and look forward to what I’m up to next!”

Here’s what he said about the experience:

“Being part of a high-profile broadcast in one of the game’s most iconic football stadiums was amazing. ⚽️🏟️ My duties ranged from running team sheets to the camera crew and commentators around the stadium, attending to presenter and host talent to organising and stocking the studio and green rooms and making purchases for the production. It was a fast-paced and dynamic experience that tested my organisational and communication skills in the best way possible.

A huge thank you to the team at Sunset and Vine for welcoming me on board and creating a great atmosphere - Debbie McRae & Serena Patel, and to SharpFutures for connecting me with this experience”
