Centre Screen are delighted to announce we have been commissioned to produce an exciting new AV installation for Manchester's historic music venue Band on the Wall, working in collaboration with renowned artistic director and designer Malcolm Garrett MBE RDI.

Band on the Wall is currently being expanded, encompassing the footprint and façade of the adjacent Cocozza Wood building, one of the last remaining perimeter buildings of the now removed and re-developed Smithfield Market.

As part of the venue enhancements, a large scale multi-screen exterior display will be created that focuses on the heritage and culture of Manchester’s migrant communities. This new artistic installation will celebrate the story of the diverse heritage of music and culture in Manchester, how music transcends geography and social division to unite people in positivity and joy, and how in 2021 Manchester still looks to the future, while never forgetting the past which continues to shape it.

More updates to follow over the coming months.

It was a pleasure to attend the grand opening of the Sub Sea exhibition Norsk Oljemuseum last night in the beautiful Stavanger.

We worked closely with the fantastically knowledgeable museum team and the marvellous exhibition design team SixSides to create an immersive show, projected inside an oil well - with additional learning triggered in real-time by visitor movement around the space.

The eight-minute immersive show is supported by three mini-games, testing visitors knowledge of oil production via playful challenges. More "official" photos to follow in due course, here are some of our snapshots from the last night in the meantime...

Down in the Deep is now open! Centre Screen worked with SixSides, Norsk Oljemuseum and their network of experts to shape three touchscreen mini-games, designed to help visitors understand the complex world of subsea technology and bring it to life with authentic, hands-on challenges. The mini-games ask visitors to build a template on the seafloor, manage an active pipeline and use a drone to scan the subsea for hazards to build a new, safe and profitable pipeline.

“The mini-games engage our guests. The challenges are relevant to the exhibition's content and we are very happy with the Centre Screen team that have perceived our wants and needs, and made three different games that can give the players an understanding of the complexity in subsea technology.”
Anja W. Fremo, Head of Exhibition, Norwegian Petroleum Museum.

Centre Screen are delighted to announce the opening of an exciting new exhibition ‘Going Subsea’ at the Norsk Oljemuseum in Stavanger. Working with SixSides we developed a series of AV and interactive media to tell the story of oil in new and engaging ways.

The main feature is an immersive projected show ‘The Well’ which takes visitors on an exciting journey to the depths of subsea to discover the innovative technologies being used in oil and gas production.

The physical space utilises a 7 x 7 metre and a 5 x 5 metre cube as the foundations for the display area. Throughout the show additional layers of interpretation can be activated by visitors via motion sensors to provide supporting information and context to the installation.

Nero: the man behind the myth at the British Museum is now open!

Playing a key part of our multi-projector installation at the British Museum, was the Map of Rome. Working in conjunction with the large wall projection which provides a sense of drama and theatre, this map, projected onto texture setworks helps add context to the illustrations of the city. Accompanied by key captions, we see the fire spread day by day as it tears through the heart of the Roman Empire.
One of the biggest challenges we are all facing right now is how to develop creative ideas and solutions in a Covid world. Our desire is to create experiences that educate and inspire, and we strive to do this in the safest way possible. We worked closely with teams at the British Museum museum and Drinkall Dean to create a large scale, evocative and theatrical installation that worked in conjunction with visitor flow. Providing multiple layers of interpretation that can be viewed from a variety of angles and distances with consideration for accessibility and safety at the forefront of the creative process.

Nero: the man behind the myth British Museum is now open!

THE GREAT FIRE OF ROME! An important moment in Rome’s history that would send ripples through Emperor Nero’s reign.

As part of the development for our large-scale digital media installation at the British Museum, we worked in collaboration with the museum team and Lombaert studio to craft a selection of illustrated scenes that helped depict Rome as it would have been during Emperor Nero’s reign. We really enjoyed the process of developing a unique visual narrative to depict the dramatic events of the Fire of Rome.

Nero: the man behind the myth British Museum is now open!
We are thrilled to have contributed to the design and development of this digital media installation in such a wonderful and thought-provoking exhibition.
Our contribution focuses on the path and destruction caused by the devastating fire that raged through Rome during Emperor Nero's reign. The multi-projector show frames a section of iron grating pulled from the ashes of Rome.
The exhibition challenges the traditional view of emperor Nero as a ruthless and eccentric tyrant and follows the young ruler as he navigated a divided society and momentous events in the history of Rome. We can't wait for you to see it!

Really proud to announce that we're finishing 2020 as the IAUD International Design Grand Award winners, for our work at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum with Gallagher & Associates, LLC.

A huge thanks to all project partners, not least Kiss the Frog, CREO Industrial Arts, Bbi Engineering, Barrie Projects and Diller Scofidio + Renfro as well as the Institute for Human Centered Design for collaboration along the way.

In typical 2020 fashion, the ceremony was remote... and before sunrise for us in the UK - smart clothes above the waist, slippers and pyjamas below...

Here's a lo-fi recording of the moment it was announced and we'll follow up with further insights into the project very soon... thanks again to all who have helped along the way and championed such great ambition.

Congratulations to the Smithsonian, Institute for Human Centered Design and Museums and the Web on the publication of "Inclusive Digital Interactives: Best Practices + Research".

It was an absolute privilege to contribute with our article, "The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum: Designing Digital Interactives for People with Varied Abilities" and to be featured alongside so many experienced practitioners.

Centre Screen endeavors to work to the principle that if any person finds they cannot engage or interact with what we are designing and producing then it should be described correctly as ‘unusable.’ If we all start to apply that simple shift of perspective when asking ‘Is this design usable?’ then we move to a mode of practice that really works for everyone. An approach we’re eager to develop further and continue to apply universally to our work, and learn from others as we share and collaboratively improve this inclusive methodology.

This week, we're delighted to see so many great establishments celebrated at Visit England's tourism Awards for Excellence 2020...especially Durlston Country Park & National Nature Reserve's gold award for Accessible and Inclusive Tourism and International Bomber Command Centre's gold award for International Tourism.

We produced AV & interactive experiences for both visitor centres and it was a privilege to work with them to help tell their unique stories to all who visit. Storytelling is always at the heart of our approach to crafting visitor journeys, and sometimes we even discover unexpected personal links between our clients' stories and those of our Centre Screen team members' families.

Centre Screen’s Graphic Designer and Animator Joel Hepworth had a profound, personal link to our project with the International Bomber Command Centre – his grandad Edward (pictured above, third from left) crewed on Lancaster bombers in the Second World War. Joel tells his story.

By royal approval? Lovely to see our basketball and racetrack interactives being enjoyed by the Duke of Cambridge, in Kuwait this week!

Prince William joined children from local primary schools as they explored a number of interactive zones at the Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre in Kuwait. We're proud to have worked on over 120 interactive and AV installations, across the Science and Transport Museums within the cultural complex, which is educating and engaging young Kuwaitis in innovative ways across a range of areas, from space exploration and robotics to natural history and human biology.
