Day 6

Reducing Waste

As we live in such a beautiful but rural area we have been researching renewable energy sources as alternative ways of powering our equipment instead of relying on current conventional methods. The alternative ways will be environmentally friendly and reduce the need for fossil fuels.

When it also comes to reducing waste, there is a few things we do to keep our waste down. One is any of our clear glass that gets wasted during the making process can be thrown back in the furnace.

Unfortunately, you can’t do this with the waste coloured glass. If you did, all the metals and minerals that make up the different colours would mix together and we would end up with a muggy brown glass in the furnace instead of clear.

What we can do with our left over coloured glass, is separate it in to its different colours and remelt them individually and use them in different ways.

Day 5

Close Up

Can you guess what it is yet?

When we demonstrate and explain our tools, people are most surprised by this one. To us, it is the most essential tool for shaping and managing the heat of the glass.

Have you guessed what it is yet?

It’s newspaper!
πŸ—ž πŸ—ž πŸ—ž

We soak a newspaper pad in water for about 10 minutes then when the glass comes in to contact with the surface, it burns and chars, and forms the dense layer of carbon you see in the picture. We can’t feel the heat through it at all!

So for all the technology in the world, to us Glass Blowers, newspaper has an essential part to play.

Day 3

Time

One item this studio is well known for is our stemware.

When learning to make a wineglass, you start to learn it a section at a time which takes years of practice to get the necessary skills to make a finished item.

🍷

First, you start to learn to fetch the gaffer β€œbits” as an assistant.

🍸

Once you are competent enough, you can be part of the benched team and learn to make the goblet top, the stem, the foot, Punty it and open it out.

πŸ₯‚

All of these stages can take many years to learn and master. This makes our beautiful hand blown stemware so precious and beloved to make 🍷 🍸 πŸ₯‚

So we have a bit of catching up to do but here is the start of our March Meet The Maker 2020 🀩 To kick it off we are sharing our story πŸ“–

Day 1

We are a family run business. Ed, Margaret, Charlie and Amy.

E&M Glass was started by Ed and Margaret 32 years ago in a converted bakery. Amy and Charlie joined the studio in 2016 and brought their added skills of teaching glassblowing to the studio.

The studio is based on the Welsh/Cheshire border and all our hand blown and hand finished glass has been made in this studio for hotels, galleries, shops and our lovely clients across the world.

Between the 4 of us we all have our own skill sets that make it possible for us to blow glass, teach glass, engrave glass and talk glass

Follow our Facebook and Instagram to see what more we have to tell you for
