Go geocaching...

From the book "Play the GPS-based game that has taken over the world. Geocaching is probably the world’s greatest outdoors activity that you’ve never heard of. It’s time to change that, and quick.

Basically, it’s a global treasure hunt that uses GPS technology through your smart phone. You use it to find ‘caches’ that have been hidden by other geocache players. These might be hidden in bushes, up trees, behind lampposts, under rocks. And there’s hundreds of them. Everywhere. In your home town. Maybe even on your street."

As well as offering ideas for days out all around the county, the book's full of interesting facts and little nuggets of Kent history.

Spot Monkton’s fairy houses...

From the book "It’s hard to believe that Monkton Nature Reserve was once a chalk quarry. Today, the 16-acre site is an oasis of wildlife and home to 25 species of butterfly; that’s half the total number of species found across the whole of the UK.

Set off on one of the two nature trails, nicely laid out and well signposted. Along the way, you should have no trouble finding common lizards basking on the logs or the great crested newts that have set up home here...The star attraction for any young visitor are Monkton’s very own fairy houses. Pick up a booklet from the Field Study Centre and follow the story to uncover the enchanted dwellings dotted around the reserve."

Here’s three to tick off the list this summer, plus where in the book to find out lots more about them:
✅ Viking Bay (find out more about surfing lessons on page 127)
✅ Minnis Bay (read about the swimming options here and close by on page 151)
✅ Whitstable (find out more and where else in Kent is great for crabbing on page 71)

Go crabbing...

From the book "Grab a net, line and bucket and fish for crabs. It’s cheap. It will keep everybody entertained for hours. It’s at the seaside. What is there not to love about crabbing? And the good news: Kent has some great spots for little ones to experience their first catch...

The jetty at Whitstable beach is the perfect spot (although if the kids are really small, make sure they don’t fall into the water). Also, try Hampton Pier in Herne Bay, Folkestone Harbour, St. Margaret’s Bay or Ramsgate’s old concrete swimming pool when the tide is out."

Go glamping...

From the book "Ditch the camping gear and treat the kids to a luxury tent - Port Lympne Reserve has a range of unique glamping lodges that look out onto the bear and rhino enclosures of the zoo, as well as the beautiful vista of the Romney Marshes and coastline beyond.

Leeds Castle’s knight-themed glamp-site makes no excuses for its rather opulent tent-based luxury, with four posters, furry throws and wood-burning stoves. You can also try the luxury safari lodges at Wheatfields or the electricity-bearing tents at Preston Court."

It’s a long summer and with lots of us going on first flights abroad with kids, long car journeys or just for when we get stuck in traffic on a day out.

What’s been your lifesaver to stop the meltdowns?

We could all do with more tips with the six weeks looming…

Visit Kent's very own Stonehenge...

From the book "Why it lies apparently forgotten in an unmarked field alongside the A229 on Blue Bell Hill is anybody’s guess. But it’s a truly remarkable spectacle, with its three uprights and massive capstone denoting the familiar ‘H’."

This is entry number 143 out of the 237 ideas for stuff to do and places to go in Kent with kids book.

We’ve got loads of new followers lately so it’s probably a good idea to introduce ourselves properly.

I’m Tom, the founder of Little Legs. We’re a fledgling publishing company that is creating the ultimate guides for parents looking to spend better time with their kids where they live.

Our Kent book is flying off the shelves. ‘237 Ideas for Stuff to Do and Places to Go in Kent with Kids’ is available in bookshops and venues across the county.

We followed this up with a Somerset edition. Soon, we will publish similar titles covering other counties, including Suffolk, Essex, Sussex and London.

Inspired by my very own Little Legs, Dudley (who’s now almost 14), and the rest of my lovely gang (my wife Em and our two beaut teenagers, Pheebs and Tills), I’m on a mission to help families to find all the places you never knew existed - and that your kids are going to love.

Our writers seek out the unusual, the quirky and the amazing. And we offer you tips, insights and recommendations for getting out there with your own Little Legs, whether tiny, toddler or teen.

Thank you for following; it’s lovely to have you on board. And if you haven’t grabbed a copy yet, what are you waiting for? Head online now to www.little-legs.com (where you can also read more about ‘Our Story’).
