Looking forward to Newark Irregular's Partizan show next weekend. James and I are taking 'Delivering Piedmont 1796', a scenario from Helion Wargames Throwing Thunderbolts, which includes the early and crucial stages of the Battle of Mondovi, when Civalieri's light troops try to delay Serurier's attack.🎲🎲

World Book Day; In 1973 I saved my Saturday job pay to buy my first book on the Napoleonic & Rev. wars; 'Campaigns of Napoleon' cost me £172 in todays money & David Chandler probably got £17 of that. More than 600 books later, todays books are very cheap, buy more especially;🎲🎲

South London Warlords and Salute Here is the participation game I will take to Salute51. The Assault on Fort Mulgrave, Toulon, December 1793. Bonaparte is in the back row of the French forces. I am sure there were a few pirates amongst the ranks of the 1er Volontaires du Gard ( Battalion on the extreme right)🎲🎲

Possible regiments of expeditionary army sent by western court to deal with Gildonic revolt in Africa in 398,based on(unfortunatelly!)highly poetic list given by Claudian depicted exctly in order as he narrates it.

Only two units can be safely identified without any doubts and those are Herculiani seniores and Joviani Seniores.Apart from these there is a very decent chance that also 6th unit depicted(Leones Seniores) is also correctly identified.Rest is far more open to interpretation.Surely,it is not an eccident that Claudian mentioned as first two units Herculiani and Joviani-perhaps the most notorious Roman regiments of entire 4th century.

I've also speculatively added "The Nervii" Legio Palatina unit listed in ND as part of Eastern army as replacement of green shield of Sagitarii Nervi working with theory that they were perhaps part of Western army at late 5th century(especially if ND is of later date for the east than late 4th century as more traditional view held it).
List in order as depicted:

1)HERCULIANI SENIORES,Legio Palatina
2)IOVIANI SENIORES",Legio Palatina
3)SAGITARII NERVI",Auxilia Palatina
4)FELICES IUNIORES,Auxilia Palatina

5)OCTAVANI,Legio Palatina(Ian Ross suggested to me a different option that this unit was perhaps the one named "AUGUSTEI",Auxilia Palatina which is heavilly suggested not only by Claudinus words that it was named after Augustus but even more by presense of that unit in ND just next to unit called "INVICTI SENIORES",Auxilia Palatina and in that case Claudianus didn't meant it as "Legion named after Augustus called Invicti(as honorific additional title) but that he actually mentioned another unit called Invicti(by full name Invicti Seniores)which would meant there were 7 regiments in total.

6)LEONES SENIORES,Auxilia Palatina

Orosius mentions that Ravenna sent army of 5 000 men which is strikingly similar to the number implied by the Claudian(on the other hand, Orosius was certainly familiar with Bellum Gildonicum from the Claudian because he quotes from it).

The last 7th unit depicted unit is an alternative version, a possible substitute for the Sagitarii Nervi,a unit called named simply Nervii. It was part of eastern army according to ND and coincidentally it is the only regiment that was simply called "NERVII",Legio Palatina without any other epithets as mentioned by Claudianus(though he states no honorific titles also in case of other units in case Legion named after augustus called Invicti is in fact misinterpratation or error of later scribes and it mentions two units-Augustei and Invicti),it might be perhaps explained that it formerly served as part of western army, such transfers existed.
