This is a great visual demonstration of how saturation can control transients. Here I’m using the saturation circuit built in to my @drawmerpro 1978 compression.
Having it turned up full was for demonstration purposes, however 50% seems to sound good and still give a bit of control.

Mix bus compression can really add something to the vibe of a mix. Here I show how different compressors bring a different kind of sound, and it's down to taste as to which you migh prefer. The first is my Heritage Audio Successor and the second is the Universal Audio SSL Bus Compressor.
Which do you prefer?

Used carefully, narrow band notch EQ's can really help control unwanted harmonics, resonances and other gremlins in a track. These three examples show how I've grabbed and reduced them on vocal, acoustic guitar and percussion. I usually use FabFilter Pro-Q3, usually in dynamic mode, and I sometimes automate a notch on and off for just when it's needed.

Sometimes getting a mix to sound clean involves chasing little gremlins. In this bus mix/master I was chasing this little transient that was flamming with a transient on another percussive part.
Using the gain tool got the best result as it was every beat 3 or so.
It’s the little things…

This track by @machine_learner, out this week, has so much space that I was able to be creative with the vocal treatments, changing the for each phrase to help the track build.
I’m a big fan of the universal audio precision delay as well as their EP34 tape echo, and both are used here.

Getting impact for a chorus in a track that's already big can be a challenge. In this example I show how reducing the width slowly in the lead up to a chorus has a bit impact, without having to turn it up.

This is how I use the best of both worlds in my studio: digital processing in the box, and analogue outside. For this master I’ve used @fabfilter_plugins Pro Q3 in linear phase mode to do several bits of dynamic control - some high frequency harshness, managing the hi mids in the centre, and widening the top of the mix by EQing the sides.
I’ve then gone into analogue for some sweetening EQ with the @elysia.audio X Filter and using the amazing dynamic EQ on my @sslaudio The Bus + to expand the top and bottom to keep the movement and bounce.

Wanted to shout out and say thankyou to @thegigrig @jake_thegigrig for excellent customer service.

If you need some more width in your bass, try this approach - doubling it and de-tuning one side slightly. Of course you have to check it still sounds good in mono, and it’ll be most effective when you’ve got a separate sub bass underneath.
It adds some real width.
I also made use of the Logic Pro bass amp plugin to get the tone of this bass part fuller.

Originally this vocal didn’t quite transition into the next section as well as it could. I suggested using a delay with the feedback repeating the vocal over and over.
I think it’s blended the vocal into the next section really well.
No need for third party expensive plugins. This is just the stock #logicpro #tapedelay plugin.

Check this out - whilst testing @exciteaudio VISION 4X plugin I found a super fast transient on the kick.
Interestingly clipping nor limiting of the whole mix did much too it, so I went searching for what it was. It turned out to be around 1-2KHz on the kick.
Whilst the @fabfilter_plugins Pro MB was able to tame it I instead let the producer know and he’s now going to try and deal with it at source.
Super useful mission that I wouldn’t have discovered without playing with the waveform display on VISION 4X.

@wavesfactory spectre is a great tool when used carefully. Here I’m using it to add some warmth to a vocal.
It’s a multiband harmonic generator/saturator, so like an eq you can boost, but what it’s doing is adding harmonics at that frequency. So it’s great for adding stuff that isn’t so present.

Managing kick and bass can be one of the hardest things to get right in a mix. For this track I used EQ to help a combination of sounds find their space.

Often a mix requires gentle adjustment, and that was the case with most of this track.
But, on the arp I made a bold move with an @uaudio #lexicon480l with a load of pre-delay to separate it from the arp.
To add vibe I ducked the reverb return, using duck buddy.

The @solidstatelogic Bus+ has a dual mono mode where each side reacts independently to the signals coming in rather than on a shared sidechain.
On some mixes it can understandably make the low end go a bit wonky, but on other mixes it really helps add life.
I need to spend more time playing with this powerful bit of kit! So many options…

This delay plugin is ace on ping pong setting. I use it regularly to add interest, as in this case to certain vocal phrases.
Delay 101 is using automation to pick out certain phrases, but that’s because it works so well to add interest or enhance a certain point.

Mixing a track sometimes opens it up in a way that reveals the parts in a different light. Sometimes this means a part or sound need changing to get the overall production where it needs to be.
In this case we ended up changing most of the drums. And the mix and track sound better for it.
Changing the source audio always wins over extra processing, if it’s possible to do so.

This electronic track has some lovely strings. Unfortunately there was some high frequency scratchiness that was captured as part of the recording. Rather than use a fixed frequency low cut, I’ve automated the frequency. This is because the violin part moves higher through the phrase and I didn’t want my low cut to adversely affect the tone of the notes.
This way, as the notes go higher, so does the low cut cutoff. This sort of technical work is worth doing to get a cleaner sound in the mix!

Having fun with strings today. Once I’d ironed out any rogue frequencies and got them sounding sweet, I moved on to setting them in the mix with reverb and delay. This was in addition to the great delays the producer had already added. I was going for the approach of putting the strings into a bed/atmosphere.
