Out now 🐣

Chuffed to have contributed to this Palgrave Macmillan book with the essay 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙀𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙘 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙑𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙒𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣: 𝘾𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙀𝙭𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙍𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩. I draw critically on the ‘kollektiv’, a concept rooted in Russian Orthodox theology whereby personhood is achieved only through belonging to a group. The essay details an aesthetics of collectivity emerging from the cinematography of Tamara Stepanyan’s observational documentary 𝙑𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙒𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣 (2019). I, too, speculate on the film’s political dimension in its use of collective social expressions in musical form. -
