At 6pm on the 24th September 1975, Doug Scott and Dougal Haston stood at 29,095 ft on the world’s highest mountain. In the face of overwhelming odds, dwindling oxygen supplies, freezing Jet Stream winds, avalanche, frostbite, widespread public negativity and the press reporting that failure was almost inevitable, they succeeded where all others had failed.

One of the largest Heritage Lottery grants ever awarded is behind the most fascinating building project going on anywhere in Europe. Norwich Castle Keep has been an empty shell for centuries; now an ambitious plan aims to restore her to her former glory. A multi-level show palace fit for a Norman king...that is also a triumph of 21st-century technology.
This is the most difficult place you could possibly launch a major building project. Norwich Castle sits on top of a mound scraped together by hand nearly a millennium ago! Can it take the weight of a rebuild? The world’s best engineers are staking their reputation on it. The only access...an ancient stone bridge too fragile for a truck to cross.
As centuries old structures are altered to make way for new features, the archaeologists are keeping a close eye on everything...any finds could put a dent in the pocket, as well as the walls, with weeks of hold up!
For Archaeological Lead and Senior Curator Dr Tim Pestell, a major delay would be a nightmare. Frankly, they can’t afford it. The castle has to stay open to visitors during the build so that ticket revenues keep rolling in... Covid-19 put a stop to that. Can they get visitors back...and do it safely around a hoard of contractors shaking the very foundations?
