Actors must master the art of self taping for auditions Prior to the pandemic auditions were often held in person, but self-tape auditions have now gone become the norm.

Here are some tips to help with your self taping:

1. Shoot Landscape
While portrait shots might be great for Instagram, your audition tape should always be shot in landscape.

2. Stay in Frame
Shoot medium close up, unless otherwise directed. Frame yourself chest up, being sure not to cut off the top of your head. Your camera should be placed at eye level.

3. Keep Your Background Clear
You should always film in front of a blank, neutral background. A plain wall in white, grey, blue, or another neutral colour works perfectly. There should be no furniture visibly behind you.

4. Invest in Equipment
Invest in equipment to use during your self tapes. Goof Lighting and backdrops are important. You can buy second hand or fairly reasonable priced stuff online.

5. Know Your Lines
As with any audition, you should always strive to fully memorise your script for self-tape. If an audition comes in at the last minute and you need to keep your script in hand, keep it away from the camera but in your left eye line.

6. Dress for Success
Choose clothing that is flattering and wear clothes that are appropriate for your character, full costume is unnecessary for a self-tape – Avoid wearing distracting jewellery, hats, accessories, or overly heavy makeup.

7. Who is Your Reader
More than anything, make sure your reader has good diction. This helps prevent any distractions for the CD due to lack of clarity.

8. Screen or Theatre?
Remember that acting for film & television is different than acting for theatre.

9. Submit a Single Video
Always ensure that your slate is first, then be sure to edit all your clips together.

10. Practice, Practice, Practice
Like anything else, self-taping is a skill. Take theake the time to practice your audition set up and make changes as necessary.

If you're looking for further guidance, consider taking a class. TV Productions offers a self tape and audition course.

ACTING TIPS

“Act wherever you can … If you are in a circumstance where no one is paying you or offering you the chance to perform, make it yourself. You can make a theater in an empty gas station or the basement of a church. You can go off and find a place to perform. There’s this tendency to think, ‘I’d like to be an actor. How do I get the chance to act?’ If no one’s asking you, create it yourself. And never ever ever turn down the opportunity to go somewhere and perform.”

Tom Hanks

There are many ways to spin a script on stage and screen, every actor brings somethings different to a role.

On our script and scene work course we help actors make connected choices that dare to be bold. We teach actors that being bold does not always mean making large choices; but to make choices that are grounded, exciting and real.

This course is spread over 4 weekly sessions of 3 hours each. We keep group sizes small in order for the facilitator to give you a lot of individual feedback and encourage an intimate, friendly, and fun atmosphere in which you can learn and grow.

One of the most important questions discussed among aspiring actors is how to get an agent. Everyone wants to know how to get signed by a good agency and why wouldn’t you. Having a good agent can open doors for you that you cannot open by yourself. Sometimes I use the analogy of actors feeling like needy children trying to get the attention of adults (who are the agents). It can seem hard especially when you are regularly getting rejected.

Just because you feel you have something to offer the industry, can sometimes make no difference because there are 100s of people just like you trying to get represented and seen. What I have learnt from the acting industry is that no matter how good you might be, if you’re not following the process you simply won’t move forward.

We decided to put on the practical workshop: HOW TO GET AN AGENT because we have been networking with fellow actors and could see how some were really struggling to get signed. Actors were always asking: What agencies should you contact, how do you approach them? Should you call email, or go into the office. What if you don’t have a showreel? All these questions can make the whole process seem really scary.

Our workshop is designed specifically to be practical and to take you through the steps to find an agent and then get signed.

A snippet of what we cover:

• How to search for an agent

• Why would an agent want to sign you?

• How to stand out from in the Crowd

To find out more go to www.tv-productions.co.uk/courses/

If you feel you needs some help getting an agent, get in touch. This is a 3 day practical evening workshop, where you will get individual attention and support.

We have a 5% discount if booked by the 10th September. Type in EARLYBIRD6 at Checkout.
