Bankside Hotel x are thrilled to welcome mixed media artist Ewa Podles to the Art Yard Studio as their Winter Artist in Residence!

In the studio from 16th December 2024 to 2nd March 2025, Ewa will develop her project ‘Between’ - a stunning fusion of portraiture and abstraction that balances the real with the undefined.
Drawing inspiration from classic female portraiture and abstract art, Ewa’s work celebrates the essence of the female form through expressive and open techniques. Using materials like paper, canvas, ink, and acrylic, she creates a unique dialogue between traditional and contemporary practices, further connecting her work with its viewers.

Inspired by the architecture of Bankside Hotel and the surrounding Southbank area, Ewa will craft a new collection of paintings that reflect the modern beauty of her environment. Her creative process will also be influenced by her interactions with hotel guests and the local community, adding a personal and dynamic layer to her work.

During her residency, Ewa will take over the Contemporary Collective Instagram to share her journey in the studio. Follow for regular updates, behind-the-scenes content, and sneak peeks of her incredible project!

Stay tuned for an inspiring winter full of creativity! 🎨✨

Two new paintings now up on the website:
DegreeArt.com (link in bio).

They are part of a collection of artworks inspired by the unusual geology and wave-like shaped cliffs on the Hartland Peninsula in North Devon.

I’ve used a mixture of materials for these, including oil paint, charcoal and pastel. I love drawing and sometimes forget I can ‘draw’ within a painting if that makes sense. I’m hoping that the combination of materials gives a sense of the colours and textures present in this amazing landscape.

These are also on show in the Art Yard Studio until Friday 13th Dec if you’d like to see them in person.

- ‘Smoothlands’, oil paint, pastel & charcoal on wood panel, 30 x 40cm, £600

- ‘Damehole Point’, oil paint, pastel & charcoal on wood panel, 40 x 30cm, £600

Thanks for sharing these quotes from our recent landscape in art talk 🙏

Repost• Artistic approaches to the landscape ✨ Highlights from the discussion with Josie Clouting, Elaine Kazimierczuk, James D. Wilson, and Raf Zawistowski:

Landscape art captures more than just the physical world—it weaves together memory, emotion, and a deep connection to nature, as each artist explores the relationship between landscapes and their own experience.

Conversations like this inspire us to pause, appreciate the beauty of our surroundings, and reflect on the importance of conservation and sustainability in preserving these landscapes for future generations.🌎

Josie Clouting will be in residence at the Makers Studio in the Bankside Art Yard until 15th December 2024- stop by and see her during the day at her studio and don’t miss the Residency Collection Launch on Thursday, 12th December, 6–8 pm to explore her stunning landscape-inspired works!

Really enjoyed the tour yesterday of these green spaces local to Bankside, run by the brilliant charity Bankside Open Spaces Trust

We visited Tate Community Garden; a secret garden for people who live and work within walking distance of the gallery, Crossbones Garden; a place of remembrance situated on a mediaeval burial ground, and Red Cross Garden designed by Octavia Hill (1838-1912) a social reformer and one of the three founders of The National Trust.

Thank you Shereen & Mary for sharing these places with me. Lots of inspiration for my upcoming sketching demonstration at the BOST Future Gardeners Graduation event

MEET THE ARTIST:

Raf Zawistowski: blends traditional methods from the Old Masters and contemporary art practices. Using a mixture of oil paint and wax, Raf produces a unique texture to his artworks accompanied by a vivid colour palette. He begins with a sketch, then observes the natural landscape. He incorporates often overlooked colours in nature, such as the greens on moss under a fallen tree, and focuses on natural textures.

MEET THE ARTIST:
James D Wilson: explores the relationship between abstraction and memory, and his approach always starts with a series of drawings. Whether these are observational field notes or from memories of time spent in a place, they have a provisional feeling to them, as though glimpsed whilst on the move. He uses flashes of colour and minimal mark-making to make visual phrases, often cutting and re-assembling them in unexpected ways through collage. The compositions that emerge from this process, even in their fragmented state, retain a sense of the places that inspired them.

MEET THE ARTIST:

Elaine Kazimierczuk: is a British painter whose work confronts us with the vibrancy of the natural world. She spends time researching her subjects - increasingly marginal and endangered habitats - especially wildflower meadows, temperate rainforests and ancient woodlands. Back in her Cotswold studio she re-creates the sense of place through semi-abstract interpretations which teem with plant life and clearly convey her lifelong love of these special places.

This quote seems to fit perfectly with the ‘Your Wild Places’ project I’m exploring during this residency

“We tend to think of landscapes as affecting us most strongly when we are in them or on them, when they offer us the primary sensations of touch and sight. But there are also the landscapes we bear with us in absentia, those places that live on in memory long after they have withdrawn in actuality, and such places - retreated to most often when we are most remote from them - are among the most important landscapes we possess.“ Robert Macfarlane

‘The Old Ways’ is a fantastic book and if you love walking and nature it’s definitely worth a read.
