NEXT SATURDAY (27th)

And now for something a little different! This band has been exploring the crossover between Jazz and Folk music for a while now. With some tricky time signatures and beautiful melodies these guys will provide an intimate performance not to be missed.

Luke Fowler (double bass), Matt Fisher (percussion) and Elliot Frost (guitar) are three jazz musicians who’ve collaborating together exploring folk/jazz crossover music from parts of the world such as Israel, Brazil, the US and the UK. The trio perform a mix of originals and songs from other composers, particularly Shai Maestro and Avishai Cohen.
The trio initially performed together as members of the Bulgarian-folk tinged jazz group The David Dower trio who toured Bulgaria in 2019 and 2022. Since then, they’ve have been playing together regularly and working on learning repertoire from different parts of the world applying musical devices from other cultures to their own musical vocabulary.
Aside from their work together, the three are well established jazz musicians in their own right.
Fowler, former owner/manager of The Junction, has been a stalwart bass player in the London jazz scene for over ten years and is often seen performing with Dave O’Higgins, Art Themen and Alex Garnett.
Fisher is a sought after drummer and percussionist based in London. Matt has performed and collaborated with some of the UK’s most prominent musicians such as; Tina May, Jacqui Dankworth, Najma Akhtar, Nikki Illes, Steve Waterman, Anita Wardell and Christine Tobin. Working in a variety of styles from pop and rock, to jazz and orchestral, Matt has toured and performed around the world including; India, USA, Morocco, Mexico and across Europe. Matt is endorsed by Kandu Percussion.
Frost since moving to London in 2019 has performed as both a leader and a sideman at venues such as The Vortex, Ronnie Scott’s, Hampstead Jazz Club. His debut album New Surroundings featuring Jonathan Chung, Calum Gourlay and Corrie Dick is to be released on the AMP Music & Records label on the 5th of May.

The Hampstead Jazz Club presents an intimate night of music with vocalist Nel Begley, singing a range of songs that are close to her heart. Inspired by Jazz greats: Cole Porter, Burt Bacharach and Jobim, the evening will include classics from the American Songbook, playful re-workings and Bossa Nova’s, featuring bandmates Paul Edis and Luke Fowler.

Bubbly and heartfelt Jazz vocalist Nel Begley has found herself in the midst of the London Jazz Scene, performing regularly across the city.

Nel has performed at almost every Jazz festival across the UK, toured the UK and Europe with a variety of different projects. She currently performs with ensembles: London Vocal Project and original band Rafe’s Dilemma.

She is currently completing a Masters at Guildhall School of music and drama as a scholarship student and former undergraduate of Leeds Conservatoire. Nel is definitely one to watch as a rising young experienced Jazz vocalist.

SUPPORT LIVE JAZZ: The Battersea Jazz Festival is a free event which features some of London’s finest jazz musicians. Last year, the festival took place over one weekend, plus a launch party at the Junction, at a few indoor and outdoor venues across Battersea. Hundreds of people came to enjoy the music of London’s jazz scene, and the festival also raised £1,162.20 for a local charity.

This year, the festival will take place at a much larger number of venues from early July to the 6th August. Some of our favourite Junkies will be performing! It’s very exciting that this year is going to be even bigger and better, and there are already some incredible gigs in the diary, but the festival relies heavily on crowdfunding to cover the costs of paying musicians, venue hire, etc. etc. All donations of any size make a huge difference, and every penny you pledge will go directly into funding the music for the festival.

Last year Hugo kicked off the festival at the junction and it was a blast!!

Hope to see you down for some or all of these great shows.

Another amazing emerging artist with upcoming performances;

Sean Fyfe

Previously a resident musician at the Junction, Sean is one of the busiest pianists in London,
He is a presence on the piano that is virtuosic and tasteful. Drawing heavily on the hard-bop era of jazz, he has developed a unique style on the instrument and in his musical writing.

Theses evenings contain a mix of Sean’s original compositions and arrangements of well-known standard jazz repertoire.

Sean is joined by his fiery quartet: Dave O’Higgins (tenor), Matt Fishwick (drums) and Luke Fowler (bass).
Sean has worked with a number of American musicians including Joe Farnsworth, Alex Claffy and Evan Sherman, as well as some of Canada’s top musicians such as Andre White, Dave Laing, Adrian Vedady, Dave Laing and Jesse Cahill, as well as UK musicians Josh Morrison, Matt Home, Jeremy Brown and Alex Garnett.

His playing draws heavily on the music of Cedar Walton, Bill Evans, Bobby Timmons and Wynton Kelly.

So come down to one or all of these amazing shows, you wont be disappointed!!
