To meet the and avoid runaway , we must all achieve net-zero by 2050: households, businesses, industries, cities and countries. According to the and Intelligence Unit, so far only one-sixth (16%) of global GDP is covered by net zero targets set by nations, regions and cities. Some are more ambitious: and have net-zero emissions laws for 2030 and 2045 respectively. Meanwhile, We Mean Business has over 900 companies with $17.6 trillion in market cap signed up to a zero-carbon economy transition. What is your country, city or company’s net-zero targets?

What is the business case for or ? It’s a question I’ve been asked for 30 years, so finally I’ve distilled the economic benefits into the 7Rs. Investment in sustainability: 1. lowers (especially by better value chain and stakeholder management), 2. improves (the intangible asset of brand equity), 3. fosters (the ability to survive system shocks such as climate events), 4. increases efficiency (thus saving costs through less water, energy and waste), 5, anticipates (therefore adapting and avoiding fines and penalties), 6. supports (and retention of talent), and 7. increases (from growth markets).
