From tomorrow, Jonathan Yeo’s portrait of HM King Charles III will be on display at the Philip Mould Gallery in London.

Interestingly, over a year after the coronation ceremony for the portrait of Britain’s monarch, Charles III was completed.
Renowned portrait painter Jonathan Yeo created the painting at the commission of the Drapers’ Company, which traditionally collected royal portraits for centuries.

The portrait combines the traditions of classical royal portraiture with contemporary painting. As Jonathan Yeo explained: he wanted a portrait that captures the personality of King Charles. Thus, he opted for a purplish–red background symbolising royalty, passion, and power, which blends into the Welsh Guards uniform worn by the king, complete with a sword. The butterfly motif also appears in the painting as a symbol, an idea suggested by King Charles himself.
While the portrait may seem startling at first, according to Queen Camilla, it captures the essence of King Charles.

The portrait will be publicly displayed at the Philip Mould Gallery in London from 16 May until 14 June. It will be displayed at Drapers’ Hall from the end of August.

Special thanks for the high-resolution pictures to Jonathan Yeo.

23th (and some of European region on 24th) April,
Saint George’s Day

The cult of Saint George slaying the dragon is well known throughout Europe. In many areas, he is the patron saint of shepherds and agrarian works and the protector of knights, soldiers, gunsmiths, and hobos.

Saint George’s day was considered to be one of the most dangerous periods of the year, known as the “day of evildoers”. Many rules and regulations had to be followed because according to tradition the powers of evil were everywhere and could appear anywhere. Because the power of witches was considered to be especially strong on that day, the people placed thorn bushes on the gates and fences around their homes and even placed garlic into their keyholes to ward off malevolent spirits.

The belief that you could see buried treasure beneath the ground has also survived. It was the custom that on St. George’s Day, people went out to the meadows at dawn and collected onto sheets the morning dew which held magical powers. They wrung out the dew from the sheets and collected it in a container, then baked bread with it, gave it to their livestock to drink or used it to nurse their wounds. The belief that a witch’s coven took place on the night of Saint George’s day had survived for many years.

In many regions, livestock was first shepherded to pasture on Saint George’s Day. To avoid hexes and illness, the livestock had to pass through the smoke. In certain areas of Transylvania, they still perform the custom of “milk measurement”. The sheep that were herded onto the pasture are milked and based on the amount of milk that was produced at the first milking, the amount of cheese that the shepherd had to produce during the grazing season for the farmer was established.

Ancient Heritage and Living Traditions

https://boastmagazine.co.uk/holi-spring-festival-of-india/

Holi, Spring Festival of India

Holi is one of the most ancient festivals of Hinduism. It marks the end of winter and the revival of Nature with its colours, flowers, and the ever-symbolic triumph of good over evil. It is celebrated on the full moon day of February-March. It lasts for a night and a day, starting on the evening of the day preceding the full moon. This year it starts on 24th March and ends on 25th.

The eve of Holi is called Holika Dahan, the burning of the demon Holika. People make bonfires and symbolically burn everything considered evil while remembering the story of the mythical Indian king Hiranyakashipu, who considered himself more powerful than the God Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu was powerful indeed, he even received a boon from the gods that neither a hand-held, nor a launched weapon could kill him. His unlimited pride and confidence made him demand his son, Prahlada, worship him instead of Vishnu. Prahlada didn’t obey him and remained a true devotee to Vishnu. The infuriated father asked his evil aunt, Holika to destroy Prahlada. Holika tried to burn his nephew but Vishnu interfered and saved Prahlada while Holika burnt to ashes. Vishnu then, in his incarnation of the half-lion, half-human Narasimha, eviscerated the king using lion claws, therefore killing him with neither a hand-held nor a launched weapon.

The Romans and Geoffrey Chaucer

The Celebration of Valentine’s Day, linked to the Roman fertility celebrations and then to the Christian martyr and patron saint Valentine, as we know it today, began its worldwide conquest in England.

Its popularity dates back to the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer’s poem ‘Parlement of Fowls’, which was written and first performed in 1383, probably for the Valentine’s Day celebrations at the court of King Richard II.

Since the late 15th century, there have been Valentine couples in England who send each other small gifts or poems. The link with the gift of flowers can be traced back to the poet Samuel Pepys’ wife Elizabeth Pepys, who in 1667 responded to her husband’s love letter with a bouquet. From this time onwards, the link between the letter and the bouquet became established in English noble society by imitation.

Chocolate Mousse for Valentine's Day

Perfect Dessert for Lovers

Let’s see what it takes to make this divine dessert, besides having the desire to go into the kitchen. Because I warn you, if you just approach it casually, it surely won’t turn out well. The mousse is made with love, as well as with chocolate, butter, eggs, and cream.

If you’ve got everything from the fridge, melt one and a half bars of dark chocolate over a double boiler. I admit, I do it in a small saucepan over a gas flame, but try this only if you’re highly skilled. Add about 20 grams of butter to the chocolate and mix the mass until smooth. Then add two egg yolks and cook the mixture until thickened, then let it cool. If you like, you can add chilli, orange zest, and mint. Chilli is my personal favourite. While the chocolate mixture is cooling, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Similarly, beat 250 millilitres of cream until stiff peaks form.

Here’s a little trick! If the cream doesn’t want to stiffen enough, add 1-2 teaspoons of flour. I know it’s surprising, but it works! Once the chocolate mixture has cooled, fold in the whipped cream, then the egg whites, but gently! Spoon the soft cream into glasses, chill, and eat it quickly.

Four popular models have been redesigned by Rolls-Royce to mark the start of the Year of the Dragon, with the contribution of a number of artists.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars presents four magnificent ‘Year of the Dragon’ Bespoke commissions to mark the Lunar New Year, which begins on 10 February 2024. Designed and hand-crafted at the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood, these rare and beautiful Bespoke creations – three Phantom Extended models and one Cullinan – are a celebration of Chinese culture through Bespoke artistry. Just as Chinese culture transcends national boundaries, the destinations for these highly Bespoke motor cars span the world.

The commissions draw inspiration from the dragon, an enduring and international symbol of power, success and prosperity. Burns’s Spirit Brings Us Together

Interview

https://boastmagazine.co.uk/scotch-and-the-poet-burns-spirit-brings-us-together-burns-night/

Estimated reading time: 9 minutes

Every year on the 25th of January the whole United Kingdom, especially Scotland, pays tribute to the birth of Robert Burns, the great national poet of all Scots. Poetry lovers and patriotic fans dress up in garments fully couched with tartan or at least a tartan tie or a pair of socks to show appreciation to the bard. This night features much more beyond belonging and cultural necromancy. Burns’ heirloom brings us together to light a new fire of our fellowship at the dawn of the new year by singing his hymn Auld Lang Syne.

Let us give you an insight to the traditional Burns Supper by introducing Esme Simmons who has taught generations a respect for British literature. As a loyal lassie she is keeping the poet’s memory green after many years.
