Today is World Prematurity Day! 👶🗓️
This day is particularly significant to me because both my daughter and I were born prematurely.

About World Prematurity Day

World Prematurity Day has been observed annually on 17th November since its establishment in 2011 by the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI). The day aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by preterm babies and their families, as well as the importance of improving care for premature births. Premature birth, defined as a birth occurring before 37 weeks of pregnancy, affects approximately 15 million babies worldwide each year.

Kangaroo Care: A Lifesaving Technique
One vital practice for preterm infants is Kangaroo Care, where the baby is placed on the parent's bare chest, ensuring skin-to-skin contact. This method, named after the way kangaroos carry their young, has profound benefits for both the baby and the parent. It helps regulate the baby’s body temperature, breathing, and heart rate, while also fostering a strong emotional bond.

Studies have shown that maternal touch can significantly influence a baby’s survival and development. The physical closeness promotes the release of oxytocin, often called the “love hormone,” which reduces stress for both mother and baby and supports breastfeeding. For preterm infants, such nurturing contact can be life-changing, improving their growth, sleep patterns, and overall health outcomes.

Some Thoughts on Halloween

Dear Reader, wherever you may be in England or elsewhere in the world,

Halloween has intrigued me for years as a Christian-rooted, European-cultured, Hungarian mother living in England with a young child. How should I approach this foreign celebration, with its grinning pumpkins, spooky decorations, and Trick-or-Treating culture, or the Halloween products flooding the shops?

I love celebrating; if I could, my whole life would be one unending festival. As I grew to appreciate life in England, Halloween became, for me, a quintessentially English custom, one I tried to join to the best of my ability. It seemed like a cheerful event where people in amusing costumes stroll the streets, visit each other, set off fireworks, carve pumpkins, and where children receive sweets or coins from strangers.

Walking with my daughter through our suburban neighbourhood, we would gaze at the ghoulishly decorated houses, admire a ghost story projected in one window, and carve pumpkins ourselves, the insides of which became a delicious baked pumpkin dish. To us, it felt joyful and fun.

Last year, I thought we’d simply focus on the lighter side of Halloween, full stop!
But this year, I began to waver. What if Halloween truly has demonic roots, and that dreadful druid tale… I dug deeper (as far as Google allowed) and found that traditional churches generally oppose Halloween, seeing it as pagan or occult, even as some Christians partially incorporated it into All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, which focus on the dead and death.

Autumn Holidays 🍁🍂

Mankind has formed its culture according to nature throughout millennia. Human societies are reflections of work done together. Everyday labour is intermitted by happy holidays when long gone traditions are brought alive to revive community spirit. Old rites often had a function to change nature by magic but they gradually turned into holiday customs. Our modern world is no different in this respect – many of our holidays go back to centuries old traditions. Another tendency is that in the old days, celebrations were in small circles but in the last century many local holidays moved continents. We can say holidays are also globalised.

Nations living in moderate climates set their workdays and feasts according to nature’s yearly cycle. In the northern hemisphere, autumn is the time to end summer tasks, to collect produce and to harvest.

Saint Demetrius

Patron of herdsmen, just like Saint Wendelin. According to the old saying “Demetrius makes shepherds dance”. In some places, shepherds’ balls last for a whole week. Sheep are counted and new shepherds are hired. If the wind is chilly, winter comes early.

28th of October – Saint Simon

In Eastern Europe in some areas they wait until this day to start grape harvests so that ice will give grapes a special taste. After the day of Saint Simon, animals are not taken to pasture as there is nothing to be found. Winter weather arrives and winter clothes are to be worn.

31st of October – Halloween
