🌺📘 NEW TITLE ANNOUNCEMENT 📘🌺

‘Shadows of Boulder Hill’ presents a group of fifty powerful paintings in oil on linen by artist Tang Shuo (b. 1987 in Guangxi, China) that delve into his childhood experiences in rural southern China. This, Tang’s first book, documents the concurrent exhibitions of these works at Fabienne Levy’s galleries in Geneva and Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2023.

‘Shadows of Boulder Hill’ marks a significant point in Tang’s career; in 2023 he incorporated narrative threads into his paintings for the first time, depicting young lovers, recluses and wanderers lost in imagined and remembered landscapes of lush vegetation and wildflowers.

‘Shadows of Boulder Hill’ includes a foreword by gallerist Fabienne Levy and an essay by multidisciplinary scholar Dr Matthew Holman. Here, Tang appears as an artist who has found his voice as he eloquently explores scenes of family, friendship, suffering, solitude and survival.

Publishing on 27 June in the UK and 24 July in the US with limited stock available NOW from Hurtwood’s shop.

Gilbert & George will be at Hatchards for their legendary Christmas evening signing copies of ‘THE MEANING OF THE EARTH’ by Wolf Jahn, which documents their incredible career to date.

‘THE MEANING OF THE EARTH’ is a continuation of Jahn's 1989 book, ‘The Art of Gilbert & George’. The author writes an intense philosophical interrogation of Gilbert & George's art that grasps its cosmic scale.

Our partnership with Anomie Publishing continues apace and  ‘I Saw This’ by artist Tom de Freston is the first book we’ve directly worked on together, this time on the pre-press and printing of the book.

The book was launched last week at a fabulous event at No.20 Arts celebrating not only the book but also the end of the Small Worlds exhibition AND the 10 year anniversary of Anomie. It was a great party and huge congratulations go to Matt Price (who we are proud to say is now our Publisher!) and to Tom de Freston for his stunning and thought provoking body of work ‘From Darkness’.

“I Saw This is a collaborative arts project by artist Tom de Freston, documentary filmmaker Mark Jones and Oxford based academic Ali Souleman. Inspired by the Syrian war and the terrorist explosion that left Souleman blind, the project explores trauma and suffering, sight and memory, inner and outer worlds, and questions of hope, life and death. The publication features an introduction by Habda Rashid, essays by Yasmin Floyer and Matt Price, and contributions from the three collaborators.”

Look out for further exciting books coming soon as the Anomie and Hurtwood alliance goes from strength to strength. Exciting times ahead…

Our Director Francis Atterbury recommends 'Brian Clarke: A Great Light' now showing at Newport Street Gallery. We've worked with Brian Clarke and HENI PUBLISHING in the past to produce the book 'The Art of Light' and it was a joy to reproduce his stained glass art in book form. Francis had a great evening catching up with friends at the private view. The exhibition runs until 24 September.

A pocket forest 🌳🌲🌿🌾💚

ANNOUNCEMENT | A permanent Pocket Forest to be grown outside the Hayward Gallery this summer! 🌱🌿🌲🌳 Comprising 390 UK native trees species within a 130 metre-squared section of the site, the new 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚 𝐍𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 will reflect our commitment to sustainability as part of our continued work to be a Net Zero carbon site by 2035 (Scope 1 & 2)

This is the first pocket forest to be installed at an arts organisation anywhere in the world with SUGi.

The Natura Nostra forest will be launched as part of the Hayward Gallery’s upcoming exhibition 'Dear Earth: Art and Hope in a Time of Crisis', aligning with the exhibition’s aim to inspire a deeper emotional connection to nature, in this case through rewilding its urban surroundings.

MORE ABOUT THE POCKET FOREST
Being planted in early May, the new pocket forrest will be situated on a terrace next to the Hayward Gallery entrance and adjacent to Waterloo Bridge.

It is estimated that this pocket forest will give an average carbon sequestration rate of 3 kilos per square metre per annum, at a total of 405 kilos per annum over the first 20 years of growth. Carbon sequestration is the capturing, removal and storage of carbon dioxide.

Created using the Miyawaki method, a technique that allows for quick planting and an almost maintenance free upkeep, the pocket forest is designed to encourage wildlife and nature to thrive amongst the brutalist architecture of the site, restoring the sights and sounds of the natural world. The pocket forest will be installed using a dense style of planting and it will reintroduce 24 native British species such as hazel, crab apple, dog rose and more to the heart of London, supporting the wellbeing of both people and the planet.

The 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚 𝐍𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 is a collaborative project between urban rewilding organisation SUGi and Moët & Chandon

"BLISS had three possible cover finishes that were tested and made into casebound prototypes with all debossing and finishing applied. Here are the spines of the three tests lined up and you can really see the contrast, because we wanted the book to encapsulate a little of what the BLISS installation was like to to experience this prototyping was really important" - Billie Temple
