It’s been a few days since we returned from Unfinished, and what an incredible experience it was! The team did a fantastic job curating a diverse group of fascinating thinkers and practitioners across various industries. But most impressive of all were the connections people made there!

In our session, we discussed Play as Practice and thoroughly enjoyed sharing challenges faced by creative entrepreneurs as their practices evolve. We also shared some of the most playful examples from our own practice at Hirsch & Mann. Timmy Ghiurau, a guru of eye-tracking and helping machines (and perhaps some humans?!) understand human emotions, and Daniel Hirschmann engaged in a discussion moderated by Lauren Celenza (stay tuned for a future podcast episode!).

Some other notable talks we enjoyed include:
• Jason Silva and his unbelievable energy and ability to craft thought-inspiring narratives.
• Barbara Soalheiro and the amazing work her company Mesa does, solving complex challenges in just 5 days.
• Ben Okri whose reflections and poetry beautifully closed the event.
• Grace Boyle & Guillem Perutxet Olesti's robotic performance that CNC’d the form of a baby out of a huge salt crystal.
• Bethany Koby's insights into the ways children develop.

🫶 A huge thank you to the Unfinished team, particularly Capucine Gros, Cristian Movila, and Patricia Grigorescu.

If you have the opportunity to attend Unfinished in the future, don't hesitate – GO!

💡 Today we’re looking at light installations in public spaces by some amazing artists!

👀 Starting with Vendel & De Wolf’s “Whole Hole”, a beautiful tunnel of light streaks that dynamically animates as boats pass through it. The immersive installation feels like you’re getting pulled into a futuristic wormhole and is a nod to the expression “seeing light at the end of the tunnel!”

🧚‍♀️ We also love Daan Roosegaarde’s “SPARK” installation which has been exhibited across the world and is inspired by the magical light of fireflies. It’s been designed using biodegradable light sparks that organically float through the air resulting in a poetic performance.

💗 Finally, there’s Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s “Pulse Island”, an array of over 4000 light bulbs illuminating Lulu Island in Abu Dhabi. Each light bulb glimmers to the rhythm of a participant's heartbeat via PPG pulse sensors. As visitors add a new recording of their heartbeat, the oldest recording of the collective gets replaced, creating a Memento Mori.

This week, we’re looking at retail spaces which have embraced 3D printing at a large-scale! 💓

🐠 Starting with this stunning coral-inspired storefront for Tiffany & Co., designed by MVRDV in Singapore. The cell-like pattern is made using recycled ocean plastic, and beautifully highlights the brand’s commitment to sustainability and coral conservation.

🤩 Next up is the La Manso store in Barcelona designed by External Reference, featuring 3D printed organic formations inspired by the city’s architecture and the floral motifs on the store’s external facade. The design aims to blend Catalan modernism with the style of the brand’s jewellery, resulting in a captivating interior.

🔮 And finally there’s PINKO’s store in Fiumicino, also designed by External Reference, which has an interior facade made entirely from 3D printed modules joined together. The textured layer is composed of overlapping threads that cleverly intertwine with the display shelves, resulting in a seamless integration between form and function. Not only that, but embedded within the cladding are programmable luminous glass spheres - fabulous!

Today, we’re looking at some artworks commissioned by the fashion brand COS

Snarkitecture created an impressive installation in Seoul that features a series of suspended, sinuous tracks inspired by childhood marble games. The piece spanned across the gallery space creating an array of kinetic moments, with 100,000 marbles introduced one at a time every five seconds.

Artist Phillip K. Smith III created a mirrored installation for Milan Design Week that showcases a series of mirrored panels reflecting the surrounding architecture and sky, creating an illusion of openness and expanding the perception of space. The minimalist design highlights the interplay between light, form, and environment.

Mamou Mani Architects designed an installation inspired by natural patterns and geometry, featuring a canopy structure resembling shapes and patterns found in nature. The design emphasised sustainability with its use of biodegradable materials and showcased innovative digital fabrication techniques.

Is everyone as obsessed with kinetic window displays as we are? Check out these nature-focused executions:

🌸 Wonderlabs Studio designed Burberry’s window in Shenzhen to celebrate the flora diversity in nature, featuring an all-white wall of kinetic flowers that bloom as passersby approach.

🌊 StudioXAG produced GANT’s flagship store window in Regent St to celebrate their commitment to sustainability. Partnering with fishermen, GANT has removed 165 million tons of plastic from the ocean, upcycling it into garments. The window captures the essence of waves, using 120 cogs to move 30 disks.

💼 To celebrate Alexander McQueen’s Curve bag, Random Studio created a display featuring rows of bags oscillating like waves. Inspired by the River Thames’ tide, this installation brings the peace and tranquillity of the natural world into the heart of London.

⚡ Today, we’re looking at some setups by the daring fashion brand Moncler!

👉 The 1st one features a striking performance of hovering kinetic screens, created for their ‘Genius’ line in collaboration with Gentle Monster.

👉 The 2nd installation showcases their collaboration with designer with displays connected by luminous cables. It explores the symbiosis between humans & the digital world, as part of the brand's first global immersive digital experience - 'Mondogenius'.

👉 The 3rd setup is for their ‘Grenoble Fall/ Winter 2024’ ski wear collection. Set in the snow-decked forests of St Moritz, models walked the runway in an open-air experience with glimmering light projections on the surroundings.

Luxury brands are pushing the boundaries of experiential retail more than ever before! But have you seen these unique executions? 🌟

🐲 Earlier this year, Louis Vuitton captivated its customers with a bejewelled dragons installation in its Chengdu flagship store. The artworks were individually crafted by local artisans and adorned the storefront and interior spaces, highlighting the brand's dedication to local culture.

👛 The 2nd installation features a spiral staircase inside La Gallerie Dior in Paris. It offers visitors a journey through their creations from past to present, showcasing a rainbow of miniature dresses and accessories. Seeing it in person is truly a visual delight!

🎨 Lastly, the 3rd artwork is "Romantic Futurism: A Digital Fresco for Gucci Chengdu" by Random Studio. The installation is a generative painting created in collaboration with AI, seamlessly blending classical art with modern technology, and complementing the store’s classical architecture.

Which of these projects is your favourite?

✨ Today we’re looking at some state-of-the-art wearable projects!

We love Clara Daguin's hand-embroidered piece called 'Aura Inside'. The fascinating garment is equipped with temperature sensors that react to the wearer’s body heat, bringing its cosmic design to life.

Another artist we’ve admired for a while is Casey Curran. Their recent creation, 'Stellapluma', is a kinetic and almost hypnotic wearable that clings to the body like a living creature - it looks straight out of a sci-fi movie!

Do you know any other artists creating future-forward wearables? Share your favourites with us! 💬

🤩 Throwback to when we collaborated with Intel, MRM and fashion designer Christian Joy to design a wearable technology that would elevate the performance of the American indie rock band the Yeah Yeah Yeahs!

Using the latest sound analysis technology, we created the LED jacket, mapping amplitude to the brightness of the LEDs, and frequency to individual diodes. The lights were powered by a portable battery through a custom-designed PCB sewn directly onto fabric.

The end result was an integrated system of hardware and software that could be remotely controlled via an Intel-based smartphone and wearable for a rockstar performance! 🤘

🤯 Let’s end this week with two stunning laser light installations we wish we’d seen in real life!

Check out "Intangible " by Shohei Fujimoto and "Vanishing Point" by United Visual Artists. Both artworks use perspective to reshape our perception of space and the intangibility of light. They create the illusion that light is a physical material through the geometries and compositions achieved with the movement of the lasers.

🌸 Did anyone say kinetic botanical artworks? Let’s look at some pretty executions by other artists!

1️⃣ Starting with Whyixd’s Cyclonic Bloom - a kinetic light installation made up of 177 mechanical flowers inside the ‘Maker Building’ in Taipei for hardware company Cooler Master. The flowers’ design is reminiscent of a CPU cooler fan to align with the brand’s offering and, collectively, they form a flowy shape across the 7-metre high atrium - reinforcing the brand’s language.

2️⃣ Next up is the installation Ame Nochi Hana by design studio Nendo, which is a series of blossom-like raindrops in the central atrium of a department store in Paris. It was designed to draw attention to the store’s white-goods sale prices celebrated each January.

3️⃣ The last piece of this series is Sound of Blooming by Luxury Logico. It’s composed of 697 mechanical flowers to celebrate the World Flora Exposition in Taiwan. Each blossoming petal is made up of 250 motor-units, sensible to sunlight and wind and reactive to visitors’ touch and sounds.

We absolutely love the futuristic creations that Gentle Monster's Robotics Lab have brought into the retail world over the last couple of years!

Some of you may have seen their Giant Head in Selfridges two years ago - a hyper-realistic kinetic face aimed at stimulating and surprising customers with its calm and mysterious expression and movement. This piece was created with the broader aim of creating an artwork that questions the relationship between humans and our vision of the future of mankind - and this piece certainly does that!

They’ve also created other robots such as Unopened: The Probe which is a 2.5 metre high walking robot with six legs depicting the brand’s idea of an alternate universe.

And finally, their Accelerator piece consists of two rotating objects moving back and forth to simulate the evolution process of a plant. Super cool & intriguing, to say the least!
