In my hundreds of conversations with leaders at early-stage B2B companies, large open source projects, and global consumer brands all trying to define or build community programs, it’s clear that the road to community is fraught with peril: Underinvestment, lack of internal alignment, and fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of community have led many companies to attempt and then quickly shutter their community programs. But the biggest challenge I’ve seen is that they lack a go-to-community strategy. Too much of the discourse around community has focused on either high-level concepts (like empathy and belonging) or on the tactical aspects of community management (such as job titles or channels).

Community is the “new” moat (or so some have said), and it’s true: Having a community helps protect against competitor companies or products entering your territory. Whether that community is a group of power users, open source contributors, creators, or even just a brand (or franchise)’s su...

Using an entirely different index is kind of a big deal. Google obviously dominates the space (to the point of becoming its own verb) and even other popular privacy-focused search alternatives like DuckDuckGo rely on a mix of results from larger indexes like Microsoft’s Bing and their own web crawlers. Brave claims its search engine will default to its own results, but the company does clarify that for certain kinds of searches where it still isn’t able to produce results with enough relevancy (or enough results at all), it pulls answers from other providers.

Another alternative to the dominant search engine.

Do some searches in Google and you’ll see that that kind of thing doesn’t matter anymore. You’ll see that the top ranked sites are ranked because they are relevant for the topic, not because they have an exact match keyword phrase in their heading tags.

So to finish up, what’s important is to accurately describe what the topic of the article is with your headings and to use headings to provide a description of what a section of content is about.

This will help Google to better understand the content because in 2021 Google doesn’t rank exact match keywords the way it used to in 2001 (I know because I was doing SEO in 2001).

Today Google is ranking content, not keywords. It pays to think of the entire page in terms of “What is this about?” and each section as to how it relates to that overall topic.

Poll of nearly 2,000 SEOs shows more than 50% don't know what Google recommends for H1 headings

"In the next decade, as we reassess our relationship with social media – and by extension, the Big Tech companies that run them – we will see more people leave public platforms entirely, sticking instead to small communities and friendship groups on more private platforms."

We may never leave social media completely. But we will control which aspects of our identities we share, and with whom

Don't confuse your third-party cookies with Google's native first-party!

"There are exceptions to Google’s plan. The company’s limit on unique tracking identifiers doesn’t extend to so-called first-party data—information a company gets directly from a customer. For instance, websites will be able to sell ads based on users’ activity only on that specific site.

The Alphabet company said that it plans next year to stop using or investing in tracking technologies that uniquely identify web users as they move from site to site across the internet.
