Passengers at some of the country’s busiest airports, including Gatwick Airport in south London, are facing disruption due to foggy weather.

Much of the UK has been shrouded in mist in recent days and the weather is having an impact as airports return to their normal flight schedules after Christmas.

Travellers are being urged to check with their airline as air traffic restrictions are in place due to fog, the country’s main air traffic control (ATC) provider Nats said on Friday.

A Nats spokesperson said: “Restrictions of this sort are only ever applied to maintain safety […] We continue to monitor the situation and have a Met Office expert embedded within our operation to ensure we have the latest available information. Our teams are working closely with the airports and airlines to minimise disruption.”

More than 150,000 migrants have arrived in the UK after crossing the Channel in the last seven years.

Since current records began on January 1st 2018, 150,243 people have made the journey, according to PA news agency analysis of Government figures.

The milestone was reached when 407 people crossed the Channel in 10 boats on Boxing Day.

On Christmas Day more than 450 people crossed the Channel in 11 boats.

It comes after Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the Government had a moral responsibility to tackle Channel crossings, but refused to set a deadline on when a target to see the numbers fall “sharply” would be met.

She also told MPs she was “determined to keep making progress” on reducing the number of hotels being used to house asylum seekers, saying they were “completely inappropriate and extremely costly”.

Shoppers are predicted to spend £236 each on average in the Boxing Day sales this year, with the majority of purchases made online.

A total of £4.6 billion will be spent, a study by Barclays Consumer Spend researchers found.

Nearly half of respondents said the cost-of-living crisis will affect their post-Christmas shopping but the forecast average spend is still £50 more per person than it was before the pandemic, with some of that figure due to inflation, Barclays said.

Amid the financial pressures, many people are planning to buy practical, perishable and essential items such as food and kitchenware.

A total of 65% of shoppers are expecting to spend the majority of their sales budget online. Last year, Barclays found 63.9% of Boxing Day retail purchases were made online.

An 88-year-old great-grandmother still receives a every year from the German pen pal she has been writing to since she was 12.

Sylvia Perkins started writing to Lisa Kull in Germany in 1948, while attending Monnow Road Girls’ School, as part of a school exchange after the Second World War.

While the other pupils in her class ended their correspondence after the project was completed, Mrs Perkins continued writing to Mrs Kull, who is now 89.

Despite never speaking on the phone or meeting in person, they have shared life updates and maintained the tradition of sending cards for the last 76 years.

“We had this one English lesson where we were given this address, and we obviously wrote these letters, and I presume the school posted them,” Mrs Perkins told the PA news agency.

“Then we were left to go our own way to keep it up and my mum encouraged me to keep writing.

“I can remember one Easter, my mum, who was a very smart dresser, bought this beautiful scarf for Lisa that we posted off at Easter.

“At our age now it’s just Christmas cards.”

Mrs Perkins said she was the only one in her class who continued to write letters.

“I’m a stayer in that respect, and she must have been the same.

“She must have the same sort of temperament as me and I value this.”

Mrs Perkins said although the school exercise was initiated as a result of the war, she and Mrs Kull never spoke about it.

“I only know a very few words of German, but the first time she wrote to me her English was, and I mean even now is, perfect,” she said.

“We didn’t talk about the war. Her husband, Willie, I think was taken as a prisoner of war by the Russians.

“He didn’t come home from Russia til five years after the war.”

For her 50th birthday, Mrs Perkins’ daughter Joanne tried to arrange for Mrs Kull to come over to London but she was unable to because of her husband’s ill health.

While the two have never met in person or even spoken on the phone, their correspondence has been a consistent part of both their lives.

“It’s just what we did in those days. I mean, we didn’t have social media. It was pen and paper, wasn’t it?” said Mrs Perkins.

Her most recent Christmas card from Mrs Kull reads: “Dear Sylvia, another year is over, and we are one year older, 88 and 89 years.

“You are a great-grandmother and I am a great-grandmother to Yoshi, the new dog of my grandson, Jonas and his wife.

“2024 was a good year with good health. I am in my house. For you and your family, a very happy Christmas and a healthy 2025. Yours, Lisa.”

Mrs Perkins said she looks forward to receiving Mrs Kull’s card every Christmas to know she is still alive and well.

“It’s one Christmas card a year, but I get that Christmas card and I think, whoopee, she’s still going strong,” she said.

Charges against a man being prosecuted over a fatal attack on a railway worker have been amended to murder and affray.

British Transport Police said Ayodele Jambgadi, 28, was initially charged with grievous bodily harm after the incident at Ilford station, east London, but the victim, 61-year-old Jorge Ortega, later died.

Jamgbadi is next due to appear in custody at Inner London Crown Court on 7 January.

The RMT union said Mr Ortega was one of its members who worked as a customer experience assistant for MTREL, which runs the Elizabeth line.

He was taken to hospital after suffering severe head injuries in the attack at about 8.50pm on December 4, but later died.

His family described him as “the most loving person, the kindest soul you could have the pleasure of meeting”.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said in a post on X that the incident was “absolutely tragic”.

Residents of a complex in London were left “very angry” after being asked to remove their “harmless” Christmas lights, according to one homeowner.

Ronald Neil, 82, a retired journalist, said he and other residents at Teddington Riverside, a collection of apartments and townhouses, received an email from their property management group on 23 December detailing complaints regarding Christmas lights on balconies.

Mr Neil, who lives with his wife and has decorated his balcony with lights, said he has lived at his property for six years and has never been asked to take the lights down.

“People are very angry because all we’re doing is stringing these lights as part of Christmas on the balconies and we’ve been instructed to remove them,” he told the PA news agency.

“It’s a perfectly innocent thing to do at this time of year.”

Mr Neil estimated between 10 and 15 properties have been decorated with Christmas lights, adding he did not take his down despite the initial instruction.

“We switched them on anyway because this email didn’t arrive until 4pm,” he said.

“We would not win any prizes – 30 or 40 yards of these tiny little lights, and we’ve just strung them along the balcony.

“I have to say it’s not very impressive. They’re absolutely harmless and they just brighten up people’s balconies.

“And for some reason or other they say: ‘Remove them because it’s not in the terms of your lease or contract,’ which to be honest with you I think is bonkers.”

An email from property managers Urang Group read “numerous complaints have been received regarding the Christmas lights being displayed on the balconies which is a breach of lease”.

It goes on to “kindly urge all residents that have erected lights on their balconies” to remove them.

A day later on Christmas Eve, residents received another email from Urang apologising “for the distress” caused and suggesting “to maintain the Christmas cheer” people with light displays should switch the lights off at 10pm or “turn the luminosity down during sleeping hours”.

Mr Neil said: “The place is not ablaze in light.

“I’m very glad the wise men were allowed to have a light so that they could follow it.

“Seems to me, at Christmas time, putting up a few Christmas lights is not exactly breaking the law.

“We need to brighten up our lives at the moment, anything that does that should be welcomed, not condemned.”
