What is a self-driving car?
The Center for Sustainable Systems at the University of Michigan defines autonomous vehicles as “cars that use technology to partially or completely replace a human driver in driving a vehicle from origin to destination while avoiding road hazards and responding to traffic conditions.”

SAE's six levels of so-called "autonomous" driving range from the first three levels (from scratch), in which a driver sits behind the wheel and takes control but is assisted by various automatic warnings or safety features such as blind spot warnings and Automatic emergency braking. Levels 3 and 4 represent technology where vehicles can drive themselves in certain situations but may require a human driver to take over. Finally, Level 5 – fully autonomous or self-driving vehicles that do not require humans to operate controls. This is the only level at which a vehicle is considered fully autonomous.
