The Springbok Club held their annual Day of the Vow commemoration meeting in December 2024, at which Committee member Gavin Sandeman read a rivetting article written by the organisation's Honorary President, Peter Fisher (pictured), about his life and Empire travels, particularly about his time and adventures in South Africa and in Rhodesia.

My copy of the latest edition of Rhodesians Worldwide magazine (Oct./Dec.2024) arrived safely a couple of days ago, and I was most pleased to see that it contained the article which I wrote about the "Raising of the Flag" ceremony after the 2023 event - even though I wrote this over a year ago now! I say that it included my article, but actually it only included the first half of this: hopefully the rest of it will be appearing in the next edition!

The Springbok Club held a most enlightening and encouraging meeting in order to mark the 59th Anniversary of Rhodesian UDI in central London during November, at which the guest speaker was Mr. Geoff Hill, the co-founder and first editor of Rhodesians Worldwide magazine who is currently the Africa Correspondent for The Washington Times and The Spectator. In his most informative and enthralling talk Mr. Hill gave many first-hand details about the recent significant election results in southern Africa and about some extremely important developments currently taking place in the sub-continent.

On Saturday 19th October 2024 The Springbok Club staged the annual "Raising of the Flag" ceremony, which this year took place at Fox Corner near Guildford in Surrey, the place where Frederick Courteney Selous lived most of his married life. After rendezvousing at the near-by Fox Inn the Springbok Club party assembled outside Selous's house where Sgt. Graham Gillmore (ex-Grenadier Guards, RLI and South African Pathfinders Company) acted as Parade Commander, supervising the raising of both the Union Flag (by Miss Sarah Mort) and the Rhodesian Flag (by Miss Hannah Mort), which was followed by a few words from the current Springbok Club chairman, Mr. Alan Harvey, about the legacy of Frederick Courteney Selous. Following this both the British and the Rhodesian National Anthems were sung, and then toasts in Sandeman's Port were raised to the King and Queen, the immortal memories of Frederick Courteney Selous and Peter Sladden, and to all those who fought and died for the Rhodesian cause. The Springbok Club party then returned to The Fox Inn where Mr. Gary Vincent gave the second part of his PowerPoint presentation about the life and career of Frederick Courteney Selous, and where - surprisingly - they met members of the Cardiff Arms Park Male Voice Choir who gave some splendid renditions of tradition Welsh hymns and arias at the bar, to round off a truly enjoyable and inspiring day! Pictured are Sgt. Graham Gillmore calling the assembly to order, the actual raising of the flags (Gary Vincent is pictured on the right), the colour party outside Selous's former house, and Springbok Club Chairman Alan Harvey thanking everyone for their participation.

The Springbok Club wishes all of its many members, supporters and friends a happy and inspiring 334th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne!

On Saturday 29th June the Springbok Club will be holding the first in a trilogy of visits being planned to sites associated with Frederick Courtney Selous (after whom the Selous Scouts were of course named). This first event in the trilogy will be staged in north London close to Regent’s Park, where Frederick Selous was born, and will consist of trip to see the place where he was born, followed by a stroll along a near-by canal which he undoubtedly knew as a small boy, before adjourning to a neighbouring hostelry where a PowerPoint presentation about his early life will be shown. Rendezvous will be in the early afternoon close to Camden Town Underground Station. For more precise information about this event either e-mail: [email protected] or ‘phone: 07711188430.
