It’s almost 20 years since I published my first paper on Movement & Mental Health. The field was a niche movement & evidence/credibility very sparse.

We were not taken seriously.

The field now has liftoff-we’re mainstream 💪 Mental Health Awareness Week is focussing on “Movement for Mental Health” 🔥

Time to reflect on the fields tremendous progress, main challenges & where next?

Where better to start than 2005, the time I started my first research study….check out my new blog

What do you hope the field achieves in the next 20 years?

20 years of research on movement and mental health - we have made huge progress, but much more to do

Youth physical activity levels are declining but are key for wellbeing…..

I was particularly concerned about these results from the ASICS EMEA State of Mind Index. We must address the issue of low physical activity in adolescence.

What is the nature of the problem? What can we do about this?

Can sitting too much make me depressed? *Well, it depends....

New blog, all of the science of sedentary behaviour and mental health.

I am particularly concerned about the relationships we see in young people and implications for work places....

If you spend a large part of your day on your laptop or watching TV, this may be of interest. I was reassured by some of our recent research!

It is quite well established that excessive (over 8 hours), particularly uninterrupted, sedentary behaviour (basically sitting) is associated with a range of adverse physical health conditions. But what about the impact of sedentary behaviour on the mind? We and several other research groups have lo...

If exercise is good for your mental health, why are athletes at such high risk of mental illness?

Its a question we should ponder. Do take a read of my blog covering the research & my experience of rehabilitation of athletes & mental health.

https://www.drbrendonstubbs.com/post/if-exercise-is-good-for-you-then-why-do-athletes-have-such-high-levels-of-mental-illness

This is an important question and one I am sure many of you have pondered. I had asked myself that question but I really considered this in much more depth when Professor Steve Peters spoke immediately after me at a Sports Psychiatry event 5 years ago. I attended the event and gave a detailed talk a...

A new impressive systematic review & network meta-analysis is out today in the BMJ shows (again) that exercise works for depression.

I have written a blog - The main message in my view is that we do not need more research to answer the question “does exercise work for depression”.

We have hundreds of systematic reviews showing this. We need to focus our attention on how to we take the findings from research and influence clinical pathways and sports/leisure/fitness facilities with the knowledge and confidence to offer exercise for people with depression?

https://www.drbrendonstubbs.com/post/exercise-works-for-depression-can-we-now-start-implementing-this-now-please

Do you agree?

An impressive systematic review & network meta-analysis is out today in the BMJ. The conclusions and headlines are practically the same as over 100 reviews published in the past 10 years….that exercise is an effective treatment for depression. The only difference in the review findings in recent p...

Can Physical Activity Prevent Depression? *Spoiler - possibly*

New blog cutting through the latest science on movement, fitness and depression.

Depression is a burdensome condition affecting approximately one in five of us across our lifetime. In addition to the profound individual impact on our lives, health and wellbeing, it is major contributor to taking time off work and even early death. Whilst genetic predisposition partially contribu...
