**A New Year’s Reflection: Memories of Madeira from a Madeirense travelling the world**

Feliz Ano Novo para todos vós 🎉🎊🍾

A pleased New Year to all my cherished followers, Madeirenses and friends from around the globe! I hope your celebrations were as enchanting as mine, spent high above the bustling streets of London on the 40th floor, gazing out at the magnificent cityscape.

Though I was far from the shores of Madeira, my heart wandered back to those treasured moments of my childhood in Funchal, where I would sit beside my beloved granny, mesmerised by the fireworks that lit up the sky. Those dazzling displays were not merely bursts of colour; they were a magical tapestry woven with dreams, each spark seemingly falling beneath my gaze, transporting me to a fantastical world filled with vibrant hues and joyous sounds.

No matter where I find myself as the clock strikes midnight, I always carve out a moment to honour those precious memories, ensuring they remain a part of me. How did you celebrate your New Year’s Eve? What unique places did you embrace as the year turned?

As I look to the future, I yearn to return to my beloved island and relive those moments of pure wonder again. Perhaps 2025 will be the year I find myself back in that magical paradise where every firework reminds me of the joy and beauty of life.

Here’s to new adventures, cherished memories, and the hope of returning to the heart of Madeira!

🌶️ Ever wondered about the spicy saga of Vindaloo? Here’s a fun fact: its name comes from a Portuguese dish called *carne de vinha d’alhos*, featuring meat marinated in wine vinegar and garlic! 🍷🧄

This vibrant delight went to India in the 15th century with Portuguese explorers and found its spicy home in Goa. Talk about an epic culinary journey! It’s probably one of the first-ever fusion dishes—and it's still going strong! 💪✨

Now, let’s clear up a common misconception: the British version of Vindaloo wasn’t just about the heat! It was crafted to complement a cold beer, balancing the spice after a hearty meal. 🍺🔥 Over the years, it evolved in Goa, embracing a fantastic mix of fiery chillies, zesty ginger, bold black pepper, warm cinnamon, and fragrant cardamom. Yes, please! 🙌

In Madeira, this dish is traditionally served with a slice of orange, but I love to elevate it by making a refreshing side salad of orange slices infused with rose water and mint. It pairs beautifully, adding a delightful contrast to the spices! 🍊✨

While Vindaloo shines during Christmas in Madeira, it’s my beloved childhood dish. My family still makes the classic *carne vinha d’alhos* with just the basics. But when I’m entertaining in London, I always whip up the Goan version for that extra flavour punch—and it’s always a crowd-pleaser! 🎉❤️

A Sip of History in Every Glass✨🍷

Ah, Madeira wine! The island’s liquid gold is steeped in history and character. But let’s be honest: it’s not just a drink; it’s a story waiting to be uncorked!

A Toast to the Past
Did you know that Madeira wine dates back to the Age of Exploration? Sailors would fortify it with brandy to ensure it survived long voyages. Little did they know they were creating a wine that would become a favourite of British nobility and common folk. Cheers to serendipity!

The Four Pillars of Madeira
Madeira wines are classified into four main grapes: Sercial, Verdelho, Bual, and Malvasia. Each brings its flair to the table (or should we say the glass?):
- Sercial: Dry, crisp, and a tad cheeky; perfect for those who enjoy a refreshing aperitif.
- Verdelho has a delightful balance of sweetness and acidity, making it the ideal partner for rich seafood dishes.
- Bual: Semi-sweet and rich, it’s like a warm hug in a glass—perfect for those indulgent evenings.
- Malvasia: The diva of dessert wines, luscious and sweet, just like a holiday treat!

Ageing Like Fine Wine
What’s truly magical about Madeira is its ageing process. These wines are subjected to extreme heating and cooling (consider it a thermal spa for grapes), enhancing their complexity and longevity. Some bottles can last for decades or even centuries! Imagine sipping a wine older than your great-grandparents—talk about a conversation starter!

Pairing Perfection
Not sure what to pair with your Madeira? Think outside the box! A cheeky Sercial with oysters or a luscious Malvasia alongside a slice of chocolate cake will elevate your dining experience to new heights. Your taste buds will thank you—trust me!

Several Madeira wine houses actively operate on the island. Notable ones include Blandy’s, Justino’s Madeira Wine, Pereira d’Oliveira, H.M. Borges, and Vinhos Barbeito, well-known for producing unique wines, styles, and histories.

# # # Pan con Jamón: A Festive Delight in Madeira 🇵🇹✨

**Introducing Pan con Jamón**
Originally a delicacy from Venezuela, this traditional bread, filled with layers of ham and accented by olives, has blossomed into a cherished Christmas treat in Madeira. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Madeirans who emigrated between the 1950s and 1980s. Its soft, slightly sweet dough beautifully harmonises sweet and savoury flavours, embodying the warmth of celebration and blending cultures.

**A Christmas Staple**
During the festive season, Pan con Jamón graces the tables of Madeiran families, often prepared using treasured recipes passed down through generations. Making this dish brings loved ones together, fostering community and celebration.

**Local Variations**
While the classic version is beloved, many Madeirans add their little twists, incorporating local cheeses and spices for a unique flavour. These adaptations reflect the island’s culinary creativity and diverse influences.

**More Than Just Food**
Pan con Jamón symbolises togetherness, perfect for sharing and enjoying with family and friends during Christmas. It often shares the spotlight with other traditional dishes, making it a central part of holiday feasting.

**Celebrate with Us**
As we embrace our emigration history and a blend of culinary traditions, let’s celebrate Pan con Jamón as more than just a treat—it’s a reminder of the warmth and joy of the season.

Have you tried Pan Con Jamon? What are your thoughts? Waiting for?

**Praia da Cana Vieira: A Beloved Beach in Need of Support**

Nestled in the parish of Caniço in Madeira, Praia da Cana Vieira is a stunning beach known for its secluded sures and clear waters. For generations, locals have cherished this spot, learning to swim and creating lasting memories.

Foot access to the beach has been blocked for quite some time, sparking a passionate fight among the community to reclaim their right to this beloved location. We must support their efforts to resolve this issue and restore local and visitor access.

🌶️🔥 Piri Piri Paradise: A Love Letter to Frango da Guiia! 🔥🌶️

If you haven’t experienced the mouthwatering magic of Chicken Piri Piri, are you even living? 🤔 Let me take you on a flavour journey to one of my favourite spots in Madeira: Frango da Guiia!

Here’s the scoop: this isn’t your average chicken joint. We’re talking about perfectly barbecued chicken marinated in Portugal’s most famous chilli sauce so good it could make even the most stoic foodies drool! 🤤 And don’t even get me started on the sides—bolo do caco, garlic chips, a fresh side salad, and milho frito (that’s deep-fried polenta, for those not in the know) will have you questioning how you ever lived without them.

🍷 Wash it all down with something from their impressive wine list because good food deserves great wine. And if you’re feeling adventurous, dive into their other meat offerings, like juicy ribs and picanha, which are perfect for sharing (or not; no judgment here).

The best part? This place has a relaxed vibe that screams, “Come as you are.” Jeans and elasticated trousers are encouraged because the portions are generous! 😅 Plus, the Madeiran décor is simple and keeps it easy and casual.

Oh, and save room for dessert! Their traditional Passion Fruit pudding is the cherry on this culinary adventure. 🍮

With three branches—their flagship in the Lido area of Funchal, Garajau in Caniço, and another in Esteeito de Câmara de Lobos—you will be spoiled for choice. My heart belongs to the Lido location (shhh, my auntie works in the kitchen, so I know it’s terrific).

So, whether you’re flying solo, on a romantic date, or out with friends, Frango da Guiia is the place to be. Get ready to feast and maybe even roll out the door and down the stairs! 😂

📸 *Swipe through for some drool-worthy pics, and let me know if you’ve tried Piri Piri chicken before (not the Nando’s version)!*

🌊✨ **Walking on History: Madeira’s Original Pebbly Roads!** ✨🌊

🪨💙 These old cobblestone paths are charming; they tell a rich story of our island’s heritage!

While the new calçadas (pebble streets) are stunning works of art that enhance our island’s beauty, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of stumbling across an original path. It’s a true moment of *saudade*, connecting us to the past and the artisans who meticulously laid each stone. Some in the most remote and unusual locations🎨💚

So, as you wander through Funchal, take a moment to appreciate these historic pathways beneath your feet. Each pebble holds a piece of Madeira’s soul, inviting us to remember the stories of those who walked here before. 🏞️✨

Let’s celebrate and preserve the beauty of these timeless roads! Share your favorite cobblestone moments in the comments! 👇💬

🌟 **Stairway to Architectural Bliss** 🌟

Nestled within the stunning Pestana Casino Park Hotel, this magnificent staircase is a testament to the genius of Oscar Niemeyer and Viana de Lima. Their 70s masterpiece, a cantilevered concrete marvel, gracefully frames the breathtaking city of Funchal and the endless Atlantic views. 🌊✨

While I adore the original design, I can’t help but imagine how a modern Nordic update—with its moody hues and minimalist charm—could elevate this space even further. Just picture it: the grand lines of the staircase coming to life in a darker, more atmospheric palette! 🖤🤍

Did you know? This architectural gem not only stands out against the backdrop of the oversized Savoy and local Casino but also serves as a unique focal point in the heart of Madeira. It’s a reminder of timeless craftsmanship that deserves to be celebrated!

What do you think? Could a modern twist on this classic design make it the star attraction in Portugal? Let’s discuss this in the comments! 💬👇
