More than 1.4 billion people traveled internationally in 2024 as tourism returns to pre-pandemic highs

Feel like airport security lines keep getting longer, or that you’re booking hotel reservations way further in advance than you used to?

It’s true. The UN’s World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has just released its 2024 year-in-review data, confirming that the tourism industry has bounced back from the pandemic.

About 1.4 billion people traveled internationally last year, which is 99% of the number who did the same in 2019, the last full year before Covid-19 hit the world.

That amounted to $1.9 trillion being spent in the tourism industry, meaning each tourist spent more than $1,000 per person on average.

But where did people go?

Overall, Europe was the most-visited continent with 747 million tourists in 2024, according to the UNWTO.

That number was especially impressive considering that Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine kept travelers away from parts of the region, notes the tourism body in its report.

France was the world’s most-visited nation in 2024, with 100 million tourists, according to figures recently released by the country’s tourism board. Spain made a strong showing with 98 million tourists to land in second place.

“2024 was an exceptional year for French tourism, promising prospects for 2025!” Atout France, the country’s national tourism marketing department, said in a statement.

The statement cited the 2024 Summer Olympics, the re-opening of Paris’ iconic Notre Dame cathedral, and the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy as three major events that people traveled to France for in the past year.
Meanwhile, the UNWTO reports that 316 million people traveled to Asia and the Pacific in 2024, 213 million went to the Americas, 95 million to the Middle East and 74 million to Africa. There was no data on tourism to Antarctica.

Small countries, big gains
The usual big tourism players weren’t the only ones with rising tourist numbers.

In the Middle East, Qatar experienced an impressive 137% increase in tourists. Much of that was fueled by the country’s investment in infrastructure: Qatar Airways was named the world’s best airline in 2024, while Doha’s Hamad International snagged the title of the world’s best airport.

Other smaller countries celebrated big wins for tourism last year, including Andorra, the micro-state on the France-Spain border, as well as the Dominican Republic, Kuwait, Albania and El Salvador.
Looking to 2025 and beyond
Global tourism isn’t just returning to previous highs — it seems to be on an upward trajectory.

Spain, the world’s second most visited country, marked 2024 with several major anti-tourist movements: residents shooting water pistols at travelers in Barcelona, Seville weighing an entry fee and mass protests in the Canary Islands, among others.

In Italy, which had 23% year-over-year growth, the popular cities of Venice and Florence have both banned large tour groups. Around the country, overtourism prevention measures took a variety of forms, including night swimming bans, “stoplights” to indicate when an area was too crowded and rules prohibiting people from reserving coveted beach spaces with umbrellas the night before.

In its annual release, the UNWTO’s panel of experts cautioned that “balancing growth and sustainability will be critical in 2025” and advised “the discovery of lesser-known destinations.”

Atout France also tempered its celebrations for being the world’s most-visited country, stating that its goal is “to make France the world’s leading destination for sustainable tourism.”

Abu Dhabi attracts 4.8M hotel guests with cultural visitors up 21 percent, showcasing its rise as a leading global hub for tourism and culture.

Abu Dhabi Attracts 4.8 Million Hotel Guests as Cultural Events Boost Visitor Numbers by 21 Per Cent, Cementing Its Role as a Global Tourism and Culture Hub

Abu Dhabi continues to solidify its reputation as a world-class destination, with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) announcing impressive growth in both tourism and cultural engagement. Hotels across the emirate welcomed 4.8 million guests between January and October 2024, representing a remarkable 26 per cent increase in international visitors compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, cultural attractions and events drew over 3.9 million attendees, showcasing a 21 per cent surge in participation year-on-year.

These achievements underscore Abu Dhabi’s success in merging innovation with heritage, reflecting DCT Abu Dhabi’s vision to position the emirate as a global cultural and tourism powerhouse. H.E. Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, Undersecretary of DCT Abu Dhabi, highlighted these milestones during a recent media briefing while detailing plans aligned with the ambitious Tourism Strategy 2030.

As of October 2024, international guests primarily arrived from key markets such as India, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia. Hotel occupancy surpassed pre-pandemic levels, reflecting the emirate’s growing appeal. Abu Dhabi’s cultural institutions, including the Saadiyat Cultural District, continued to captivate visitors, offering a rich blend of contemporary and traditional experiences that resonate globally.

DCT Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Strategy 2030 outlines bold objectives, including attracting 39.3 million visitors annually, generating 178,000 new jobs, and contributing AED 90 billion to the GDP. The plan prioritizes expanding tourism infrastructure, elevating Abu Dhabi’s diverse attractions, and strengthening international connectivity. Collaborations with airlines like Etihad Airways and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi are central to these efforts.

Looking ahead, Abu Dhabi is set to unveil groundbreaking projects, including the highly anticipated Harry Potter World at Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, developments on Hudayriyat Island, and further enhancements in the Saadiyat Cultural District. These initiatives aim to attract new global audiences while enriching the emirate’s offerings.

With a forward-looking strategy and a commitment to excellence, DCT Abu Dhabi is ensuring the emirate’s continued growth as a leading destination for culture and tourism, resonating with travelers from around the world.

24/01/2025

With reliably hot (and dry) weather, modern courses, amazing clubhouses and superb practice facilities, DP World Tour professionals love the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and increasingly amateur golfers do, too.

Off the course is pretty special too with desert safaris, the grand mosque and the Abu Dhabi Louvre art gallery to fill your time.

But the biggest connection between on and off the course in Abu Dhabi is driving.

Off the course there is the Yas Marina Circuit, host of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and Ferrari World on Yas Island.

On it are three exceptional golf courses, all designed by respected architects, and all three would make any golf trip better.

The Ryder Cup warm-up – the Team Cup – was being played on one while the DP World Tour’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship is held at another.

Saadiyat Beach Golf Club
This might actually be the most beautiful of the three courses.

All of them feature sand (duh, it’s the Middle East) but this genuinely looks like a course built on a beach rather than in the desert or desert scrub.

The city is in the distance and it looks great at sunset, the ocean is in the other direction, and Gary Player, who can sometimes create rather wild layouts, has been quite sensible here.

It is yet to host on the main tour but the Challenge Tour has visited in the last two years and young Danish star Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen won last season.

Fun fact: you can sometimes see gazelles running across the course – keep any eye out early and late in the day.

Abu Dhabi Golf Resort
Used for 16 editions of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship this is a big boy golf course.

Martin Kaymer, Paul Casey and Tommy Fleetwood were multiple winners, Rickie Fowler, Shane Lowry, Lee Westwood and Tyrrell Hatton all won once.

It is a long golf course and designer Peter Harradine asks big questions of the driver – that will attract handicap golfers who like to test themselves to the limit and those who like to tread in the footsteps of giants (Tiger played the course! That said, Robert Rock went head-to-head and beat him in 2012).

Others might be put off.

But everyone will enjoy playing the ninth and the 18th holes which both skirt a lake and head towards the famously imposing Falcon clubhouse.

Yas Links
Famed as the first genuine links golf course in the Middle East, the designer Kyle Phillips is widely perceived to have succeeded in his task.

Phillips is also responsible for Kingsbarns – another new links course, this time near St Andrews.

And both are wonderfully playable and fun.

The holes sweep from the tee, the fairways roll, the greens attract and repel.

The current host venue for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, it is visually wonderful as well as great fun – and that’s why it gets top spot.

Another fun fact: Yas Links is overlooked by Ferrari World.
