Yale University Press, founded in New Haven, Connecticut in 1908, first established a marketing base in London in 1961, before going on to publish its own list of titles, alongside the books produced by its US head office, in 1973. Yale now has a unique position as the only American university press with a full-scale publishing operation in Europe, with a staff of over 40, including those working

in its subsidiary marketing company, Yale Representation Ltd, and for the renowned Pevsner Architectural Guides programme. Working closely with the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, the London office of Yale quickly forged a pre-eminent reputation for art history and architecture publishing in the 1970s and early 1980s. Since then our list has expanded to include history, biography, politics, music, religion, literature and current affairs, with books that have won many of the leading British literary prizes and awards. Yale London originates about 80-90 new books each year within a total Yale list of almost four hundred new hardbacks and paperbacks. The Press has a backlist of some 6000 books in print. Over the last forty years Yale London’s offices have been located in Bloomsbury or Hampstead. In 2002 we returned to Bloomsbury and are now situated in a Grade I Listed Georgian townhouse on Bedford Square, a square generally considered the most handsome and architecturally preserved in London. Previous residents of our building include merchants, artists and—in the late eighteenth century—a director of the South Sea Company. More recent occupants were Bedford College (now Royal Holloway, University of London) and Hodder & Stoughton.

While South Korea has become a global success story, both culturally and economically, North Korea’s authoritarian, dynastic regime turns an increasingly combative face to the world.

In this brilliantly readable new history, expert Korea watchers Victor D. Cha & Ramon Pacheco Pardo unpack how two such differing ideologies were born out of one people, and explain why it is vital that we engage with the region’s past in order to understand its important future.

One thing was clear to even the most untalented strategic thinker amongst the Crusaders - they needed to recover at least some of the old Christian inland cities of the Holy Land if they were to create a defence in depth.

During the miners' strike of 1984-5 the media was, as Robert Gildea (author of Backbone of the Nation) says, a 'hostile' player. It mediated and inflamed tensions between the miners, the National Union of Mineworkers and Arthur Scargill, the police, the government, and the public.

Mining communities are often described as close knit - it was a profession passed down from grandfathers to fathers to sons. Once the strike was underway, women were integral in diligently collecting and distributing food parcels to support one another during the year without wages and little other support, as Robert Gildea, author of Backbone of the Nation, explains.

On and to begin marking and we are thrilled to tell you about a book coming out next week:

‘Women and the Piano - a History in Fifty Lives’, by Susan Tomes (KC 1972) tells the story of fifty determined women who managed, against the odds, to become concert pianists. In her book Susan also interviews some of today's leading female pianists to know what it's been like to be a woman in a still male-dominated profession.

'In the history of piano music there have been many incredibly enterprising women who travelled widely, performed at a high level, composed music and were widely admired in their own day. Historians of music almost invariably prioritised the achievements of men, which meant that we gradually lost sight of many of these talented women.
A new generation of feminist historians is redressing the balance and I am happy to be able to tell the stories of fifty remarkable women who were determined to pursue a life in music.'

Susan Tomes was the first woman to read music at King’s, arriving in 1972 as part of the first cohort of female undergraduates. She is one of the UK’s most renowned concert pianists and the author of seven books.

You can now pre-order ‘Women and the Piano’ from Yale University Press, London.

March 1984. Tensions continued between mining communities and the government of the day who were threatening further mine closures. Robert Gildea explains how members of the National Union of Mineworkers voted with a large majority to down tools and take to picket lines for what evolved into a year of strike action, to defend their communities and livelihoods.
