Yale University Press, London UK & Europe office of Yale University Press. Publishing art, history, current affairs, fashion, biography & much more: www.yalebooks.co.uk

Yale University Press, founded in New Haven, Connecticut in 1908, first established a marketing base in London in 1961, before going on to publish its own list of titles, alongside the books produced by its US head office, in 1973. Yale now has a unique position as the only American university press with a full-scale publishing operation in Europe, with a staff of over 40, including those working

in its subsidiary marketing company, Yale Representation Ltd, and for the renowned Pevsner Architectural Guides programme. Working closely with the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, the London office of Yale quickly forged a pre-eminent reputation for art history and architecture publishing in the 1970s and early 1980s. Since then our list has expanded to include history, biography, politics, music, religion, literature and current affairs, with books that have won many of the leading British literary prizes and awards. Yale London originates about 80-90 new books each year within a total Yale list of almost four hundred new hardbacks and paperbacks. The Press has a backlist of some 6000 books in print. Over the last forty years Yale London’s offices have been located in Bloomsbury or Hampstead. In 2002 we returned to Bloomsbury and are now situated in a Grade I Listed Georgian townhouse on Bedford Square, a square generally considered the most handsome and architecturally preserved in London. Previous residents of our building include merchants, artists and—in the late eighteenth century—a director of the South Sea Company. More recent occupants were Bedford College (now Royal Holloway, University of London) and Hodder & Stoughton.

In 1576, in a muddy field in Shoreditch, James Burbage erected London’s first purpose-built commercial playhouse. A place of high culture and quick profit, run by cunning dreamers, the Theatre for the first time offered London’s players the chance to control what they staged. At a time when playgoing was held to be close to a sin, this entertainment factory was a flashpoint for controversy – but would also become Shakespeare’s first theatre, where he learned to ply his trade before his company moved to the Globe.

This interactive timeline, taken from Daniel Swift’s book The Dream Factory charts the Theatre’s history from the signing of the lease in 1576 to its dismantling in 1598.

A hidden, fascinating and moving history of the British and German dead buried on enemy soil in the two world wars and those who tended to their graves is being brought to light by a University of Chester Professor.

Recently published, Burying the Enemy - The Story of Those who Cared for the Dead in Two World Wars by Professor Tim Grady, explores the question of why societies only remember their own national war dead. He shares how, crucially, this was not always the case, but brought about reconciliation and unexpected friendships.

Professor Grady explained: “The enemy dead are largely a blank spot in both Britain and Germany’s ‘collective remembrance’ of the two world wars. With this in mind this book sets out to return the two countries’ wartime foe to the history of 20th-century conflict.”
