The persecution of migrants and the criminalisation of protest

🗓️ Calendar of Racism & Resistance
✍️ New piece written by IRR director Liz Fekete
🏷️ 50% OFF all IRR and R&C materials

In this week's editorial we share the outrage of migrant and refugee advocacy groups such as , , and , at the cruel prosecution of Ibrahima Bah, from Senegal, that has led to his unjust conviction for facilitating illegal immigration and manslaughter.

Much of this week's calendar is taken up with charting the authoritarian proposals - not least through amendments to the Criminal Justice Bill - being proposed by the government and counter-extremism tsars, to crack down on demonstrations in support of Palestinians and calling for a ceasefire in the war in Gaza.

Campaigns make headway - read our latest Calendar of Racism and Resistance

📺Challenging media double standards - Resetting the agenda

📢IRR NEWSLETTER IS OUT

Our third and final calendar on anti-Palestinianism is out now - visit our website to see the previous analysis and reporting we have covered over the past few weeks.

In this final newsletter we highlight that over the last few weeks, we have seen welcome signs that the mainstream media may have lost its knack for shaping public opinion. Daily mobilisations in support of a permanent ceasefire in Gaza in towns and cities across the country have posed a direct challenge to the media’s double standards in reporting from Israel and the Occupied Territories.

In the final instalment of our special calendar on anti-Palestinian racism – put together at a time of a war in the Middle East which has had an unprecedented impact on state policy and policing practices in the UK – we have gathered numerous case studies that speak to our concern that a McCarthyite witch hunt is being conducted by the media against Palestinian, Jewish anti-Zionist and other organisations, artists, academics and cultural figures and students who support the permanent ceasefire.

Joint enterprise, ‘gangs’ and racism: time to halt this continued injustice by Becky Clarke.

Analysing newly published CPS data, Clarke raises concerns of those prosecuted under the controversial Joint-Enterprise (JE) doctrine. The article highlights the decade of work by researchers and campaign group JENGbA (Joint Enterprise not guilty by association) showing that JE prosecutions are disproportionately used against Black, Asian and other racialised defendants.

Read the full article on the IRR website:

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has today published the data from its joint enterprise pilot flagging scheme. By reviewing case files during the period of February to August of 2023 information has for the first time been captured on the use of joint enterprise (JE) in criminal prosecutions. JE....
