The Timeless Game That Defined Our Childhood

Long before the digital era and smartphones, there was Suwe, the beloved game that painted childhoods with joy, skill, and community spirit. Played on dusty grounds with a chalk-drawn grid and a simple stone, Suwe wasn’t just a game; it was an art of precision, balance, and strategy.

From schoolyards to neighborhoods, children gathered in circles, cheering and laughing as each player hopped skillfully through the numbered boxes. It was more than entertainment; it was a rite of passage, a moment of unity that bridged backgrounds and brought hearts together.

Suwe symbolizes a simpler time when creativity turned ordinary spaces into magical playgrounds. Even now, its echoes linger in the memories of those who grew up playing under the African sun.

Will Suwe ever fade, or does it still have a place in today’s world? Share your thoughts and stories as we celebrate this timeless cultural treasure!

Christopher Bulus Clinches First Trophy of the Year at UTR Pro Tour in Florida

Nigerian tennis sensation, Christopher Bulus, has claimed his first major trophy of the year after emerging victorious at the UTR Pro Tour in Florida.

This triumph comes just two weeks before Nigeria faces South Africa in the Davis Cup World Group II Playoffs scheduled for February 1 and 2, 2025, in Pretoria.

Bulus, the only Nigerian player currently ranked on the ATP standings, showcased remarkable skill and determination throughout the round-robin tournament, winning all his matches with unmatched precision, power, and aces. He dropped just one set on his path to victory, dominating most of his opponents in straight sets.

The US-based tennis star's win serves as a significant morale boost for Team Nigeria ahead of their clash against a highly experienced South African team.

Since joining the Davis Cup team two years ago, Bulus has built an impressive track record, boasting an unbeaten Singles streak with seven wins and a flawless record in four Doubles matches. His overall record at the Davis Cup stands at 11 wins and just one loss, making him a key player South Africa will be keen to strategize against.

As of the time of this report, the final list of Nigerian players for the Davis Cup playoff is yet to be confirmed. However, sources suggest that at least four players will represent the country in South Africa.

Neymar Reveals Mbappé Was Jealous After Messi's Arrival at PSG

Former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward Neymar has disclosed that Kylian Mbappé became "a little jealous" following Lionel Messi’s high-profile move to the French club in August 2021.

Speaking during a podcast hosted by Brazilian World Cup legend Romário on Thursday, Neymar shed light on his time at PSG and the dynamics within the club's star-studded attacking trio.

Neymar, who joined PSG in 2017 for a world-record £222 million transfer from Barcelona, acknowledged occasional tension with Mbappé but described their relationship as generally amicable.

“He’s not annoying,” Neymar said when asked about Mbappé. “I have my things with him, we had a little fight, but he was fundamental for us when he arrived. I used to call him ‘golden boy.’ I always played with him, said he was going to be one of the best. I always helped, talked to him, he came to my place, we had dinner together.”

However, Neymar revealed that Messi’s arrival altered the balance. “After Messi came, he [Mbappé] was a little jealous. He didn’t want to share me with anyone. And then there were some fights, a change in behavior,” Neymar admitted.

Mbappé joined PSG from AS Monaco in the same year as Neymar, with both players tasked with delivering the club’s elusive UEFA Champions League title. Despite their talent, internal team dynamics proved challenging.

“It’s good to have egos, but you have to know that you don’t play alone. There needs to be another guy by your side. Big egos were almost everywhere, it can’t work. If nobody runs and nobody helps, it is impossible to win anything,” Neymar added.

During his PSG career, Neymar delivered an outstanding 118 goals and 77 assists in 173 appearances. He now plays for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, while Mbappé has since joined Real Madrid.

Governor Zulum Warns Against Collaborating with Insurgents, Unveils Agricultural Projects in Baga

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has issued a stern warning to farming and fishing communities in Baga against any form of collaboration with Boko Haram insurgents, describing such actions as a grave threat to peace and stability in the region.

The governor delivered this caution during an address at the district head's palace in Baga town on Wednesday. He urged residents to adhere strictly to farming guidelines set by the Nigerian military to ensure their safety.

“I urge the people of Baga and surrounding communities to conduct their farming activities only within areas approved by the military,” Zulum said, emphasizing the importance of compliance with military and state directives to maintain security.

His visit followed a recent attack by the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) in Dumba, Kukawa Local Government Area, where 40 farmers lost their lives. Governor Zulum condemned any collaboration with insurgents, describing it as “unacceptable and detrimental to ongoing efforts to restore stability in the state.”

As part of his commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity, the governor inspected a 2,000-hectare solar-powered surface irrigation system at Mile 3 in Baga. He praised the project as a transformative initiative aimed at achieving food security in Borno and beyond.

“This initiative will transform agricultural production in Borno State and strengthen our comparative advantage in wheat and cassava farming,” Zulum noted. He revealed plans to utilise the irrigated land for cassava cultivation after the wheat harvest, leveraging the solar-powered system to reduce production costs.

The governor also highlighted that the project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of ensuring food sufficiency and reducing agricultural expenses.

U.S. Targets Over 400 Russian Energy Entities in Sweeping Sanctions; Zelenskyy Applauds Move

The United States has unveiled a robust new wave of sanctions targeting over 400 entities connected to Russia’s energy sector, earning commendation from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The measures, announced Friday, aim to disrupt financial and logistical networks sustaining Russia’s war efforts.

President Zelenskyy, in a post on X, praised the sanctions as a decisive move to weaken Russia’s economic lifelines. He stated, “These measures deliver a significant blow to the financial foundation of Russia’s war machine by disrupting its entire supply chain: key Russian producers, insurance companies, service providers in the oil and gas industry, 184 shadow fleet tankers, logistics facilities, and third-country companies.”

Among the entities targeted is Surgutneftegaz, a prominent oil company Zelenskyy described as a financial pillar for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The sanctions also aim to curtail Russia’s revenue from oil and energy exports, a critical source of funding for its military operations. Zelenskyy expressed optimism that these measures could accelerate the resolution of the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the need for energy resources to serve global stability rather than fuel aggression.

“We are deeply grateful for America’s leadership in holding Russia accountable,” Zelenskyy added, extending his gratitude to U.S. President Joe Biden, his administration, and the American people. “I am confident these steps will significantly reduce Russia’s petrodollar income and its ability to continue its aggression.”

The bipartisan nature of U.S. support for Ukraine was a point of emphasis for Zelenskyy, who reiterated the importance of solidarity in countering Russian aggression.

Dembele’s Late Strike Secures French Champions Trophy for PSG

In a dramatic conclusion to the French Champions Trophy in Doha, Ousmane Dembele’s stoppage-time goal handed Paris Saint-Germain a 1-0 victory over AS Monaco on Sunday. The match, hosted at the iconic Stadium 974, showcased PSG’s resolve as they claimed their 11th title in 12 seasons.

Despite dominating much of the game, PSG struggled to convert opportunities, with Monaco’s goalkeeper Philipp Koehn delivering a stellar performance. From Desire Doue’s early strike hitting the crossbar to Vitinha’s near miss and Lee Kang-in’s thunderous effort being tipped over, the Parisian side faced a frustrating evening.

Monaco, too, had their moments, with Maghnes Akliouche, Eliesse Ben Seghir, and Vanderson testing Gianluigi Donnarumma in PSG’s goal. However, as the game seemed destined for penalties, substitute Fabian Ruiz provided a decisive assist, setting up Dembele to slot home at the far post in the 92nd minute.

Originally scheduled for Beijing in August, the match was relocated to Qatar after Chinese authorities called it off. Qatar, through Qatar Sports Investments, PSG’s owners, stepped in to host the event, adding another layer of significance to the game.

PSG’s victory marks the first leg of what they hope will be another domestic treble, building on last season’s clean sweep. With a 10-point lead in Ligue 1 at the end of 2024, Luis Enrique’s side remains a dominant force in French football.

Manchester United End Losing Streak with Thrilling 2-2 Draw at Anfield

Manchester United ended their four-game losing streak in a pulsating 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, disrupting the Reds’ charge towards the Premier League title. Liverpool remain six points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand over second-placed Arsenal, but the draw was a missed opportunity for Arne Slot’s men, who had come from behind to lead 2-1 through Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah’s penalty.

United broke their six-year scoring drought at Anfield with a stunning Lisandro Martinez strike and secured a point when Amad Diallo equalized in the 80th minute. The result moved United to 13th place, seven points clear of the relegation zone, and offered a glimpse of their potential under manager Ruben Amorim.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot had warned that United were better than their league position suggested, and the visitors proved him right. Coming off a dismal 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on Monday, Amorim’s side showed resilience and determination. The return of captain Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte from suspension, along with Kobbie Mainoo’s inclusion in the starting lineup, provided a much-needed boost for the Red Devils.

Despite United’s struggles, Liverpool dominated the early exchanges. Cody Gakpo narrowly missed a chance from Ryan Gravenberch’s through ball, while Mohamed Salah’s exquisite pass to Alexis Mac Allister forced Andre Onana into a sharp save. However, United began to grow into the game, creating opportunities of their own. Amad Diallo missed a clear header from Diogo Dalot’s cross, and Rasmus Hojlund’s one-on-one effort was denied by Alisson Becker.

United’s breakthrough came early in the second half when Lisandro Martinez fired a thunderous shot under the crossbar, ending their barren run at Anfield. Liverpool responded quickly with Gakpo delivering a moment of brilliance, turning inside Matthijs de Ligt and firing high past Onana for his 10th goal in 15 games.

Arne Slot introduced Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez to increase Liverpool’s attacking intensity, a move that paid off when a handball by Matthijs de Ligt, confirmed by VAR, led to Salah’s confidently converted penalty—his 18th Premier League goal in 19 matches.

However, United refused to relent. Amad Diallo’s late equalizer silenced the Anfield crowd, ensuring the visitors left with a well-earned point. The result highlighted Liverpool’s attacking prowess but also underscored the resilience of a United side fighting to climb out of the bottom half of the table.

Governors Grant New Year Clemency to 66 Inmates Across Nigeria

In a gesture of compassion and reform, Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, and Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, have pardoned 66 prison inmates to mark the New Year. The move underscores their commitment to rehabilitation and alleviating the pressures on correctional facilities.

Governor Otu extended unconditional pardons to 45 inmates convicted of minor offences, exercising his powers under Section 212 (1) (a) of the 1999 Constitution. He stated that the pardons reflect his administration’s “People First” mantra and the need to decongest overcrowded prisons.

“It is important to give a second chance to those reformed and deserving of mercy,” Otu remarked, adding that the pardoned inmates had been carefully evaluated by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ededem Ani. The inmates, previously convicted of theft and assault, will now have the opportunity for reintegration into society.

Similarly, Governor Mutfwang, in a New Year broadcast from Jos, announced the pardon of 11 inmates across Plateau State correctional centres. One inmate received an unconditional pardon, while fines for 10 others were settled by the state government.

Mutfwang explained that the Plateau State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy recommended the clemency based on the inmates' remorse and readiness for a second chance. “This initiative aligns with our administration’s focus on compassion and rehabilitation,” he said.

Meanwhile, in Bauchi State, Governor Bala Mohammed visited a correctional facility to support inmates with essential items. Represented by Secretary to the State Government, Aminu Hammayo, Mohammed emphasized the need to show solidarity with citizens facing life’s challenges.

“Challenges are a part of life, but through collective effort and prayers, we can overcome them,” Mohammed stated, urging both individuals and the government to continue supporting vulnerable members of society.

NPC Registers Over 10 Million Children in Three Months, Launches New Identity Initiatives

The National Population Commission (NPC) has achieved a significant milestone by registering over 10 million children aged zero to five years within the last three months.

This announcement was made by the NPC Chairman, Alhaji Nasir Kwarra, during a ceremony at the Asokoro General Hospital, Abuja, where the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, presented a birth certificate to the "Baby of the Year." Represented by the Federal Commissioner from Katsina State, Bala Banya, Kwarra described the achievement as a crucial step towards establishing a comprehensive identity management system in Nigeria.

Highlighting the importance of birth registration, Kwarra said, “The birth certificate is a legal identity. It identifies someone as a Nigerian and provides a foundation for accessing rights and services.”

The NPC has integrated e-birth certificates with the National Identity Number (NIN) system. Children registered now receive an NIN at the time of birth registration, ensuring their inclusion in the national database.

“We have registered more than 10 million children in the last three months, and this process is continuous. Moving forward, we will focus on registering children under one year of age, and progress has been remarkable,” he added.

To further enhance accessibility, NPC Director General, Dr. Osifo Ojogun, announced plans to establish over 4,000 registration centres across the country. He explained that leveraging technology would ensure that each registered child receives a unique identity, eliminating the possibility of duplication.

Dr. Ojogun also expressed gratitude to the First Lady, represented by the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, for presenting the birth certificate. He urged Nigerians to not only register births but also deaths, to maintain an accurate and clean national database.

This development underscores the NPC’s commitment to advancing identity management and ensuring that every Nigerian child is accounted for.

UNICEF, CRPHCDA Urge Support for Breastfeeding Mothers, Highlight ‘Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding’

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency (CRPHCDA) have emphasized the importance of the ‘Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding,’ describing them as critical maternity practices designed to enhance exclusive breastfeeding.

During a meeting held in Calabar on Tuesday with private healthcare professionals, discussions centered on policies and practices outlined in the Ten Steps, which aim to promote breastfeeding, particularly in workplace settings.

The Director-General of CRPHCDA, Dr. Vivien Mesembe Otu, urged employers across public and private sectors to create supportive environments that empower nursing mothers to balance work and childcare responsibilities.

“Exclusive breastfeeding faces significant challenges, especially for working mothers,” Dr. Otu said. “However, supportive employer policies can help alleviate these obstacles. We are committed to improving breastfeeding rates in the state and call for enhanced counselling and awareness to tackle malnutrition in a cost-effective way.”

Dr. Joan Ikobah of the University of Cross River Teaching Hospital reinforced this message, introducing the ‘Zero Water Campaign.’ She stressed the dangers of giving infants water, liquids, or solid foods before six months, highlighting the risks of contamination and malnutrition. “Breast milk is composed mainly of water and meets all hydration needs for infants,” she added.

The Cross River State Nutrition Officer, Dr. Winifred Ogar, projected that implementing the Ten Steps could increase breastfeeding rates by 50% by 2025.

The meeting also featured the distribution of informational calendars on the Ten Steps to private healthcare providers, encouraging their display in medical facilities to raise awareness.

Ivory Coast Orders Withdrawal of French Troops, Paving Way for Sovereign Military Future

Ivory Coast has announced the departure of French troops from its territory, marking a significant shift in the country’s military and political direction.

President Alassane Ouattara made the announcement during his end-of-year address, highlighting the modernization of the nation’s armed forces. "We have decided in a concerted manner to withdraw French forces from the Ivory Coast," Ouattara stated, as reported by the BBC on Tuesday.

The French-run infantry battalion in Port Bouét is set to be handed over to Ivorian control, signaling the country's move toward greater military independence.

This decision reflects a broader trend in West Africa, where several countries are reevaluating their military relationships with France, the region's former colonial power. Senegal recently declared that French military bases on its soil would close by the end of 2025. Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have similarly expelled French troops and sought closer ties with Russia.

France, which historically maintained a significant military presence in Africa, has scaled back its operations, with troops now largely stationed in Gabon and Djibouti. The reduction comes amid rising anti-French sentiment and calls for increased sovereignty across the region.

Senegal’s President Bassirou Dioumaye Faye, elected last year, campaigned on reducing foreign influence and has called for a reimagined approach to defense and security cooperation.

Ivory Coast, despite enduring political instability and a civil war in 2002, has remained the world’s largest cocoa exporter and a key economic player in West Africa. This decision to reclaim control of its military represents a pivotal moment in the nation’s push for sovereignty and self-determination.

Arewa Consultative Forum Demands Investigation into Sokoto Airstrike Tragedy

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has expressed profound dismay over a recent military airstrike in the Silame community of Sokoto State, which resulted in the deaths of at least 10 civilians and left several others injured.

The tragic incident occurred on December 25, 2024, when the Nigerian Air Force conducted an operation targeting the Lakurawa insurgent group in the Silame area. According to military spokesperson Major General Edward Buba, the civilians were killed by "secondary explosions" following the airstrike.

In response, the Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, visited the affected communities, participated in funeral rites for the deceased, and assured the injured of prompt medical attention at the government's expense.

The ACF has called for a thorough investigation into the incident, urging the Federal Government and the Military High Command to ensure that such tragic mistakes are not repeated. They emphasized the need for concrete steps beyond mere assurances to prevent future occurrences.

This incident adds to a series of accidental military airstrikes in Nigeria that have resulted in civilian casualties. Since 2017, over 400 civilians have reportedly died from such incidents, raising concerns about the military's operational protocols and the safety of civilians in conflict zones.

The ACF extended its condolences to the people of Silame and the government of Sokoto State, praying for strength to bear the loss. They also called for prompt compensation for the victims' families and the injured.

As investigations continue, there is a growing demand for the Nigerian military to review its strategies to prevent further loss of innocent lives in its operations against insurgent groups.

Lagos State Government Appeals Supreme Court Over Dr. Olaleye's Acquittal on Defilement Charges

The Lagos State Government has taken its case to the Supreme Court, challenging the acquittal of defilement charges against Dr. Olufemi Olaleye, the Medical Director of Optimal Cancer Care Foundation.

Dr. Olaleye was accused of defiling his wife’s 16-year-old niece and was initially sentenced to life imprisonment by the Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in October 2023. However, the Court of Appeal in Lagos overturned his conviction on November 29, 2024, citing inconsistencies in the prosecution’s evidence.

The appellate court held that the trial court erred in its judgment, relying on “tainted” and “unreliable” evidence from Dr. Olaleye’s estranged wife and the alleged survivor.

In response, civil society organizations pressured the Lagos State Government to appeal the ruling. They petitioned the Lagos State Attorney General, Lawal Pedro (SAN), to challenge the judgment in the Supreme Court, emphasizing the need to restore public trust in the justice system.

During a December 12 press briefing, the Attorney General confirmed that the ministry was reviewing the appellate court’s judgment. He added that the state had 90 days to file an appeal.

On December 27, 2024, the Lagos State Government officially filed an appeal, arguing that the acquittal was unjust and legally flawed. The state’s appeal is based on several grounds, including the appellate court’s alleged disregard for Section 209(2) of the Evidence Act, 2011, and a Supreme Court precedent in Dagaya v. State (2006).

The government further contended that the sworn evidence of a child above the age of 14 requires corroboration under Section 209(3) of the Evidence Act, 2011. Additionally, the state argued that the appellate court erred in rejecting key exhibits—H, H1, and H2—on procedural grounds, asserting that objections to such evidence should have been raised during the trial, not afterward.

The Supreme Court appeal seeks to overturn the Court of Appeal’s decision and reinstate Dr. Olaleye’s conviction, emphasizing the importance of upholding justice in cases of sexual offences.
