Rakes Progress

Rakes Progress rakesprogress magazine is all about the art of gardens, plants, flowers - the world outside your window

rakesprogress is as much a snapshot of the world beyond your computer's window as it is a guide to the tricky business of growing stuff. Flick through the pages and of course you'll see gardens, plants and flowers, but you'll also find photography, bees, tools, craft, veg, art, architecture, sheds, clothes, jam and, of course, rhubarb. Even if you never pick up a rake, if you want an antidote to the mad whirl of digital, there is something here for you.

IN FEBRUARY 2021, PHOTOGRAPHER SIÂN DAVEY was locked down at home in Devon with her kids. One day her eldest son, Luke looked out at the long-neglected back garden and said to his mother, ‘Why don’t we turn it into a garden full of flowers so beautiful that people will want to be photographed by you?’
Davey did just that and the project is now available as a book. Read words from Amy Raphael on and her beautiful project in the latest issue

ia a photographer who explores themes of identity, place, and human connection to landscape. Martin’s work often focuses on the environment and is informed by her knowledge of plants, particularly native wildflowers and herbs. Having once worked in London as a documentary photographer, Martin is now based in East Sussex with her home and studio facing the impressive, white-chalk, Itford Hill in the South Downs

Between 2019 and 2020, Martin spent hours on a repeated walk from the brooks in Southease to the brow of the Hill. Here she collected wildflowers (some of which were showcased in her 2021 exhibition at Egg, titled, ‘Come, See Real Flowers of This Painful World’) but she also developed a fascination with the history of the landscape. Were there stories that had been lost in the chalk’ for thousands of years? This was Martin’s inspiration for Ossa: the beautiful photographic series that explores her connection to the environment and the layers of life within it. See issue 17 for more
